Than you're an idiot. Drafting isn't an exact science, the only thing the clubs would be going over is the upcoming drafts and what players they are watching to draft in the next 12-18 months. You gain nothing over going back over a previous draft and looking at who you didn't pick up. If you somehow thing that doing this is going to mean the club doesn't make drafting mistakes, you're an even bigger idiot.

Considering as of right now, it's way to early to even tell what selections were the best made, it's a moot point. I'm pretty happy with Karni and back him to be a better player for us than Darling.

Semi-literacy is no excuse for abuse.

On our first pick I think it is safe to say we will pick up another quality midfielder...no many standout talls worth using a top ten pick for post Patten and longer?

Our combo pick should be interesting. I hope a solid defender like Talia slides for us

Dunno - When Karni & Lester were drafted most didn't consider them to be a standouts but they both look as though they will make the cut at this stage in their AFL careers. Really does depend on what is happening with Clark, Rich and Luey.

Based on last night's WC v Cats game, I sure hope our recruiting personnel are able to give very solid justification in our post-season wrap-up just why Darling was passed over. Quote Dennis Cometi- "oozes talent".

What a strange thing to say. I can’t figure out what you are on about. Are you arguing that Darling is a massively better prospect than Karnezis?

Yeah i don't know what that bloke is talking a bout. Karnezis has kicked 7 goals from 4 games and looks to be a star. Darling looks slow and doesn't have as much agility or skills as karnezis.

Darling is impressive but is more physically developed than Karnezis.

Those that come in and have an immediate effect don't always turn out to be the best player going at that available pick. Beams from Collingwood, whilst a fantastic player, has arguably been overtaken by Redden as a prospect. In their respective debut seasons (whilst Redden's class was evident) many would have thought we made an error passing him up. Two seasons from now we might be talking about Karnezis vs Darling in the same way.

This year I feel we MUST go KP in the draft. We have a good crop of developing mids however we are a bit light on in the developing big man department. Unless there is a standout mid that slides to our pick I think our recruiters will be inclined to go this way. I have been very very impressed with our recent drafting- the last three drafts yielding some great talent.

On a side note I am hoping this year we finally add another indigenous player possessing speed and skill to our mix. We don't have to use a high pick neccessarily but maybe a speculative rookie pick- something like Jeff Gartlett would be nice!

Commetti is always going to over sell a players worth that come from his home club, West Perth.. where he played & coached....

I'm more than happy with Karnezis ..he's a natural.

Edit: IIRC-Darling was injured with groin problems at the time of the draft.

Any connection with that and his alleged sex romps:p

Not a a massively better prospect perhaps, but pretty clearly a better prospect as a KPP which, with JB coming up 30yo in October, should be a priority for us.

It has seemed to me since his return from injury that might have spelled curtains for a lesser man that JB has shown he has lost a bit of his pace and mobility. Whether that is because he has been asked to play higher or whatever, that's what it has looked like to me. Makes a replacement even more imperative, even though these are huge boots to fill. Maybe Retzlaff can fit the bill, but I don't think so.

Given how overly reliant we have been on tall forwards in the past, perhaps the time was ripe to start to develop other avenues to goal. We've got 2 potential KPP forwards on the list. It is 2 too few IMO. However, I would contend that we have no-one else on the list with Karny's skill set. That makes him a worthwhile pick-up in terms of "type".

In any event, Karnezis is going to be big enough to hold down a KPP. He's listed at 191cm (same height as Farling incidentally) but, looking at him, I would bet that he has grown a couple of centimetres since being drafted. He won't be a power forward but he'll be big enough to take contested marks inside 50.

Okay that makes a bit more sense. I was pretty much thumping my desk saying the same thing as you at draft time. But Patty’s performances have turned me around very quickly. He is so versatile, looks like he could be equally good as a marking forward or in the middle.

Kerr's comments after last year's draft make for interesting reading for those like myself with a poor memory.

We're very happy because part of our strategy was to add some run and flexibility to the team. We feel that we've met that criteria with the players we've selected.

"We're pretty excited to have Patrick because for a tall guy, he's got terrific ground level skills and he can also do a bit in the middle. For a player of his size he moves well and is going to be hard to match up on because he has the overhead skills and also the quality ground-level skills. We hope he might be able to develop and play a little bit up the ground.

We paused a little bit before picking Josh. The question there was, do we add another midfielder or do we go for a key-position player? We got a couple of tall boys, but we were thinking about a genuine key-position player. In the end, we felt Josh was too good a player to pass up.

While watching a the replay today, I noticed to my surprise the Patty wasnt all that much shorter the JB. Patty also seems to have long arms for his body size perhaps not in the inspector gadget class but probably enough to give him a bit of an advantage in marking contests.

Havent seen much of "Farling" (love the nickname POBT), but he looks an old stlye KPP more in the Acorn stlye (mark and kick, good football brain, question mark on his tank/mobility). Having said that, you probably could have said that about JB 12 years ago. But at this point I am reasonably happy with the choice of Patty. I think he is a better fit into a game where vesitlity and mobility appear to be coming more important.

Back on topic for this year, with pick 8 being likely IMO we should take a mid as no Key Positions are worth this pick, outside of Patton, who I would grab if available and possibly Longer, but I don't think we need him. Todd Elton is over-rated he is a second rounder imo. Talia and Frost are late first rounders I would look at with our priority pick.

The mids this year are pretty good but nothing special outside of Conglio and possibly Wingard although I have a few doubts on him. One who I really would consider is Liam Summner, athletic skilled mid although maybe a touch outside and inconsistent but when he's on he can tear open games. Much more upside than some of the other players.

Shifter nominated Sumner as a good fit for the Lions on AFL Insiders recently.

imo there are no benefits at all in brisbane winning any more matches for the year, it will only cost us valuable draft picks, which are far more valuable now than four points.

let's hope we can use them to advantage and turn things around quickly ala wce. but nothing is to be gained this year.

I was about to jump down your throat with a rant about tanking, but on second reading I don't think thats what you're saying. However, if (and it's a huge freaking "if") we beat Collingwood or even Geelong next week, the effects on the confidence of our young players probably couldn't be measured. IMO winning one of those "unwinnable" games would have a greater effect than dropping down 2 slots on the draft order or even missing out on a priority pick.

I still look back at Round 22 1998 as a watershed victory for our club.

It's looking more and more likely that we will end up with pick 8. From all reports, any hope of grabbing a KPP would be a significant reach at this pick (barring any shocks). Common sense says this will result in us going best available. Who is the next in line? Our list lacks significant x-factor/true star potential but generally speaking, these type of kids usually lack consistency and come with quite a degree of risk over their ability to convert this talent into the AFL. The likes of Sumner, Dyson, Grigg, Hoskin-Elliot and Crozier are being bandied around for our pick. From what I have read/heard/seen, Sumner, Crozier and Hoskin-Elliot probably fall into the x-factor category, whereas Dyson and Grigg appear to be more of your 'sure thing' 150 game players. With the precarious position of our list, what will our approach be?

I have heard from a few people involved with the U18 program that next years crop is a beauty. This leads me to think we will have a more significant list turnover next year with the greater talent deeper in the draft?
