8, 28 and 29 (compensation pick) at the moment.

25. Premiers
26. Port Adelaide
27. Gold Coast
28. Brisbane
29. Brisbane
30. GWS

And 33 (just for the sake of completeness).

Second round:
30. GWS
31. Port
32. GC
33. Brisbane

A lot of ifs buts and maybes here, but breaking out the crystal ball, given Port's current condition I think there's a reasonable chance that our compo pick will be pushed back by one and at least our 2nd rounder pushed back by two (if Adelaide elect to use the Davis compo this year).

Is it true that if you loose 3 or more players to either or both of the new teams you get an extra compo pick?? has any one else heard this???
So if Mitch Clarke goes we are in line for 1????

Pretty sure Premiers wind up with pick 26 so our first pick after that would be the priority pick at 29 (assuming PA - 27, GC - 28), followed by the compo pick at 30.

Second round pick would be 34.....

I haven't heard that per se. But I have heard that the AFL in it's setting of rules for compensation picks, has allowed for anomalies. Us losing three players could be (and should be) deemed an anomaly IMO.

Also I don't think Adelaide will use their compensation pick this year, given the talks around the strength of next year's draft.

That's my bad. I went off what happened last year totally forgetting there was a new team...

Is your hypothesis that Port will lose someone to GWS and hence elect to use the resulting compo pick this year?

I doubt Adelaide will use their's, given Davis is likely to be Band 2 at worst.

If ladder stands as thus, and 3 teams (Port, GC, us) qualify for priority picks:

26. Premiers
27. Port - priority
28. Gold Coast - priority
29. Brisbane - priority
30. Brisbane - compensation
31. GWS (beginning of round 2)
32. Port
33. Gold Coast
34. Brisbane

Aren't we the only ones who elected to use our pick this year??

My (possible wrong) understanding is that it's all done and dusted, so it can't now change....

Yep.

Fair point. If it is a band 3 (and who bloody knows) I think they'd consider using it this year.

Clubs can choose to use picks the year they receive them (eg the pick the Crows'll get for Davis this year).

Tangentially, did Ade trade their Bock compo to the Tiges for Tambling, or have they still got it?

How would the Suns or Power get a priority pick? I thought you had to have 4 wins or less 2 years in a row?? I am most likely wrong about this..

Clubs get an end of first round priority pick for fewer than 5 wins in a year.

Clubs get a start of first round priority pick for fewer than 5 wins in consecutive seasons.

The league will likely tweak (if not abolish) these qualifications at the end of the year.

That's right. The only extra compensation picks that can come into this year's drafts now are the ones given to clubs for losing players to GWS this year. However, given the relative strength of the draft next year, unlikely they will be activated this year.

Yep, Richmond has Adelaide's compo pick now.

To add more info to bob's point, there's two deadlines for activating compo picks:
1. At the start of the year, for those currently holding the pick to use that year.
2. After trade period for those who received compo picks that year. I believe this also applies to those teams who receive a compo pick as part of a trade - they have the option to activate it immediately for this year's draft, but it retains the "position" of the club they got it from for that year. I read this as part of the GC coming in and haven't seen it mentioned since though.

From http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/121152/default.aspx:
Monday October 10 - Monday October 17 (2pm) - AFL exchange period, including GWS zone incentive trading rules.

Thursday October 13 (2pm) - GWS nomination deadline of uncontracted players.

Friday November 11 (2pm) - Out of contract primary list player draft nomination deadline. New or expired player draft nomination deadline. Nomination of use of compensatory selection at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft by clubs that lose a player to GWS.

So the Lions are using one of the Compensation picks in this years draft than than have another one that they can use next year. Than if Mitch leaves for GWS we get anthoer Compensation pick. So will have a bunch of picks in next years super draft.

Luke Blackwell is a mature aged player(24) from the WAFL that I would like us to get with a late pick in the National Draft or in the Rookie Draft. He was on Carltons list in 2008 so GWS has rights to him under the rule where they can get players that were previously on an AFL list. I wouldn't mind trading our 3rd or 4th Rounder for him. He would slot into our midfield nicely. Cheers LS

Hey Quigley I like what I hear about Greene is this years draft but I have not seen him, how do you rate him?

He is a hard at it little guy who has a great nose for the ball. He has come from nowhere this year and sometimes I worry that those types of guys have gone the extra yard in training leaving little upside. He is also undersized and his skills are solid but not spectacular. With all that said he definately knows how to find it in close, has quick hands and is very elusive in tight.

He is Sheldon mark II in that he looks about 12.

I've seen a few games of Blackwell. He is a prolific ball magnet and was BOG in the state game against QLD (IMO). Doesn't exactly scream 'pick me'. He is quite small from memory and lacks penetration in his kicking. I just think if you are going to add a smallish mature age player without a great kick to your list they have to be elite in some area of their game - I'm not sure Blackwell has this. I think this could be the reason Myles Sewell hasn't been picked up.
