I reckon the GC overflow might be a bit overstated so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Having said that I'm still hoping that 16 clubs are smart enough to collude to collectively drive the Suns' contracts up and squeeze a bit of the genuine talent out.

Agree with that but it is an extra dimension on this year's trade week and drafts.

Not sure I've seen the clubs ever work like that though. Too self-interested. There's probably some aspect of game theory that applies!

How long is the contract of the priority selected 17 year olds like Toy, Weller, Matera etc? Presumably they have another year to go?

Yeah, but there is a reason he isn't getting a game. Pretty ordinary player imo.

I know GC are very very interested. Was part of their pre season this year and has played with their reserves a few times this year. Looks very likely he will be at the Gold Coast next year.

GWS gets the ability to trade four 17 year olds either this year or next year who would otherwise be ineligible for that year's draft, instead being eligible for the following year. GWS can't keep them. So we can offer them X, Y and Z for a star 17 year old who was born between Jan and Apr.

Newell was very good today tagging Wingard who will be a top 5 pick. Wingard still had a reasonable game but Newell managed to keep in his pocket all day and reduce his influence both in the middle and up forward. Richie also got quite a few possessions in and under himself. He was around the ball a lot and showed reasonable proficiency in this area playing a role a lot like Bird played for the Swans tonight. He was a little scrappy with getting the ball out but when he had a bit of space to kick he did that pretty well and showed good skill. Overall I felt he was certainly one of Qlds best against SA.

We need someone who plays that role and I think he has some real proficiency. Glad to have him onboard next year.

He has moved up to the Lions from NSW. As I understand it we are obliged to offer him a spot next year on the rookie list if nothing else. If another teams wants to draft him they can bid like in a father/son situation.

So yes its pretty close to certain he will be with the Lions next year.

I don't think we're obliged to because of the move (he could've suggested it voluntarily), but from what I read the offer was something like "If you move up to the Lions, we'll offer you a spot." The expectation is probably a rookie list spot for next year.

Yeh I think I was wrong on that one. With further thought I think the situation is that we can offer a spot on the rookie or main list. If its only a rookie spot the player can opt to enter the draft. You would think that we would get it sorted.

The player can always decline the offer and enter the draft, similar to Dayne Beams and GC's zone selections. None have yet, though there were rumours a Geelong NSW scholarship kid (Ranga Edwickrama or something like that) would nominate for the draft after only being offered a rookie spot but he ended up taking the spot in the end.

Maybe we should get another quality mid with our first pick. We get smashed in the midfield almost every week with Black and Power close to retiring we'll short on class.

We no doubt need some more quality mids. Even though we don't look too bad on paper for potential talent in the guts, we simply can't rely on those kids coming good. Problem is, we still need some KPP as well. I guess towards the end of the year we will know how the KPP stock are looking. That may well determine our drafting strategy. If we can get a decent KPP in the 20's, we might go for another top mid, if there are only a couple of KPP and they will most likely be gone by 20, then we will have to go them first.

We do need a good genuine inside midfielder. Someone who is going to help with the clearances once Black is gone. Good hands and has the ability to break through congestion.
