2011 Draft Discussion

It's highly likely they'll take him but i'm not sure if it's with one of their top three picks. Coniglio, Elton and Longer are the first three they'll probably take. It really depends on how we trade players/draft picks to get a high enough pick to draft him. With Brown back i don't think we'll finish in the bottom six.

I love the sound of him. I want us to get a key forward and CHB with the 1st and 2nd (combo) picks....apart from the GWS the rest of the bottom teams will likely target midfielders early

Certainly is a good size, 197cm and 96kg. is exactly the type of player we need to draft by the sounds of it.

Unless Clark leaves I'm not 100% sold on taking a tall instead of the best available with the first pick. It is still possible to pick up a decent tall in the second or third round or even later like Retzlaff.

thats the same with me but if clark left id still take best available.

Agree with most of the post but if you take out Brown we don't have a power forward who can kick bags. I'm a big fan of Retzlaff but he's more of a leading type forward likewise Karnezis who is excellent at ground level. Clark's best position is HFF so he can just run around the ground and set up the play. I also don't think Acorn will make it but i hope he does.

When Brown was out we had trouble kicking goals from our big men. The players i've listed are good for 2-3 goals a game but not much more. Our forwardline after Brown could be one of the best ...

F - Karnezis - Patton - Banfield
HF - Clark - Retzlaff - Polec

But if he's taken i'd be more than happy to pick up another promising mid to add to our list. Players like Jimmy Webster and Liam Sumner would be good options.

Patton is almost exactly the same dimensions as Tom Hawkins when he was drafted, IIRC. I know nothing about Patton so this isn't a comment on him but Hawkins was considered worthy of a top draft pick when Geelong got him with a father-son pick. Beware the man-child!

Really don't know what the KPF stocks are like in the up coming draft, but i would imagine if we couldn't get our #1 choice first up, we would then go best available, and try for someone else with our next pick.

Each year i take a bit more interest in the draft classes, probably more so now that the drafts are so important for us. I like knowing a bit about the players so i know who they are when we draft them. I probably get 95% of my information by the posts and reports here on big footy, such as your great phantom drafts Quigs. Will be very interesting to see how / who we draft this year.

We need a Key Position Foward and CHB. They need to have good skills but an absolute passion to be better. Acorn would have started this year so far in front of Retzlaff however Bryce must have gone past him cause he wants it more. Development requires the player to want it, Rockliff is our best example and I reckon Retzlaff will be another shining example of this. Redden as well, it is infectious and Rich is spot on when he talks on keeping the young group together.

That book Outliers mentioned earlier in the thread guys is sensational. Any person who has an interest in development in sport would really enjoy it.

Was an interesting article bout Retzy posted in his roster thread recently about the work he has done and what he did to get himself up to standard to get drafted. Very much like Rocky, you just know this kid will give it 110%. If he doesn't come good, it certainly wont be from a lack of trying.
