Regardless of what the girls say, size shouldn't matter.;) If you can get the footy you are worth you're weight in gold. Too many guys are overlooked because they are deemed "too small". That's just so wrong. It starts at junior rep level and continues on so that natural footballers don't get a chance. We need footballers first and foremost, not athletes that have good testing results.

I have seen lately that a number of people including Quigley that the lions will take Elton with their first pick. From Quigley's bio he wasn't overly glowing of him and think that we should pick the next best available not just go for height. Late mail is that Port are interested Longer. Could this force GWS to take Longer at pick 3 and Wingard could go 4? Or are Port that keen for a ruckmen they might take Elton earlier at 4 if GWS take Longer at 3. This throws some curveballs early into the draft. My gut feeling is that we need the next best mid. Rich, Redden, Rockliff and co will not be our No 1, 2 or 3 mids but more a back up and the better teams have long lists with more like a best 30. This is a main reason that we should take the best mid. So is it Grigg, Kavanagh, Tyson or someone else? Love Grigg's precision by foot, Tyson's comparison to Black is an obvious enticement and Kavanagh's long lay off could be disconcerning or do we take the punt if he is there? With our three later picks in the late twenties and early thirties (certain that priority pick will happen), we then look at looking up our KPD's and KPF's. In defence Talia will be gone and so will Boseley most likely. Forwards that will be gone will be obviously Patton and maybe Paine. Thus in my mind TALL defenders to look at Sam Frost (194cm), Henry Schade (194cm), Brodie Mihocek (191cm). TALL forwards are Julian Dobosz (193cm), Joel Hamling (194cm), Michael Bussey (196cm). These are only examples of players but the need for adaptability from the talls should be looked at to play at either end. Personally if we walked away with any of those mids before mentioned and also of the KPP's i would be very, very happy.

What are your thoughts that these players could be still there at our picks and if they are should we pick them
8.DOM TYSON
29.JULIAN DOBOSZ
30.Andrew BOSLEY
34.CLAY SMITH

Andrew Boseley would be a cert for the Lions... people are already spelling his name wrong. ;)

For those interested, the BigFooty Phantom Draft Trial Run is well underway. Quigley is again doing the Lions selections this year.

NB:

* As this is the trial run, this is not who Quigley would necessarily take.
* The Lions compensation pick is in but, as the season has not finished, the potential priority pick is not.

Quigs' picks so far:

#8 Todd Elton (forward/ruck from Dandenong)
#27 Brodie Mihocek (tallish defender from Burnie)
#31 Lewis Hender (medium forward from Glenelg - another Keith boy originally!)
#49 John Mackenzie (inside mid from South Launceston)

Quigley has also indicated that he'll take Richie Newell with the next selection (although my recollection is that we've only committed to taking him as a rookie?)

Yeah we committed to taking him as a rookie.

Random question: Sydney's going to use their first rounder on Mitchell, right? What if they trade that pick away? Would they only have to use their second rounder or do they miss out on Mitchell? I assume it is the former, but it seems like a pretty big loophole...

Father son picks are done before trade week so they will have to use first rounder most likely

1st Pick- Best Midfielder available
2nd Pick-Best Key defender available
3rd Pick- Best potential freakish talent available
4th Pick- Mature age draft pick

This draft is almost the most important draft in our history. If we nail this one we build a formidable list, if we stuff it then we have a void of performance we cannot cover with our current list!

When i say dey defender i mean a young forward or defender- young forwards often make the best defenders!

With a thin draft will it be relatively easy to tell (out of 2 or 3 players) who will go at pick 8 ?

Yeah, perhaps, but not yet. These things always change as the U18 competitions play out.

There is also always the chance of Hadley really liking someone at pick 8 that groupthink may have in the 14-20 range. Karnezis wasn't really touted by many as a top 25 type pick but hadley liked him and took him. Looks like a wise move now.

Love how Hads backs himself in.

I had heard before the draft that we were after Redden. I was following it on SEN and they announced it as Jarryd Redden and I was a bit disappointed and then went okay well at least we haven't reached for the other Redden bloke and we do need a ruck.

:) Oh well what do I know.

i think it would be beneficial for the club to take Dayne Zorko with either a late pick in the national draft or early pick in the rookie draft (if still available). I believe he has shown enough to get a chance at afl level and since 'ready made' Queenslanders are so rare these days the club would have nothing to lose. I think we could really benefit from someone like him at the club in 2012

I agree

Can someone give me the correct numbers that we will have at the draft. Currently i know we have pick 8, then comp pick at 27 and then i'm a bit lost with priority pick and then second round? Saw quigley have picks 8, 27, early 30 then pick 40 for some reason. If it is second round pick 40 why is this so?

As it stands now:

Pick 8, pick 29 (priority pick), Pick 30 (compo Pick) and Pick 34 (2nd round). I haven't been bothered to work out where the later round picks will be though.

with all the hype over john butchers (Port adel) first three games, should we be considering drafting his brother who I believe is in this years draft.

heard the coach from gippsland power last night saying that the brother has more upside & potential than John

would be interested to hear the opinions of those in the know of such things - quigs etc.
