with all the hype over john butchers (Port adel) first three games, should we be considering drafting his brother who I believe is in this years draft.

heard the coach from gippsland power last night saying that the brother has more upside & potential than John

would be interested to hear the opinions of those in the know of such things - quigs etc.

for those in the position to research and/or advise on this his name is Danny Butcher he plays for Gippsland Power. he is the younger brother of John Butcher who has caught the attention of everyone since making his debut three weeks ago.

Apparantly Danny has bigger wraps on him than John, who was taken in the top ten of his year.

Nup he is a midfielder. You would not realise they are brothers.

He had some OP issues last offseason and had a pretty slow start to the year. I was not impressed with him in the Champs but from all accounts he is finishing the year very well. Definate chance to be drafted given he is hard at it and very quick.

Does he have the kicking technique of a ten year old like his older bro?

... but should we be giving him serious consideration, or are there others of higher importance? and will be go top 10 like his brother, given his wraps?

No way in hell he goes top 10.

His brother was a KPF who performed at the Champs. Danny did not. He also has had injury issues the last two years and his form for the most part this year has been ordinary. He played for his local team for quite a while before getting a call up for Gippsland. He had a good TAC finals series last year and if he does the same this year he might come into consideration for one of our second roundish picks given his athletic ability. Guys can come from nowhere with good performances in the finals but he has a fair bit of work to do.

If we do go for a midfielder with pick 8, do we grab someone known for their outside or inside game? I'm thinking we need another outside midfielder because we're starting to look decent around the stoppages and need to improve our delivery to our forwards.

I think we've got a good mix of mids that are strong around the contest in Rich, Redden, Rockliff, Polkinghorne, Raines and Harwood (Green?).

Hoskin-Elliot sounds like a nice fit for us. Would also help soothe the hypenated angst of those hoping we got George Horlin-Smith last year.

Yeah he would be a good fit for us, he has Speed, Good Kick on both feet, And hurts opposition teams when he has the ball. But I don't he will be there at #8.

I think we could just miss out. Strong chance to go number 7 to GWS I think. Perfect player for us IMO and I do hope we get him!

I have a felling he is going to go to Port at #4 because they do need some speed in the middle,or GWS at #7. But he would be a very good fit and would add some speed to our side.

If Tyson goes at 3 as Emma Q is suggesting Port will take about a half second to grab Wingard at 4.

Does Tyson going 3 force anyone to slide?

Or is it just a matter of Tyson 3 & Wingard 4.

I must admit I only saw Wingard and Tyson play live once at the champs, but geez Wingard impressed me. The three in front of him must be serious talents...Wingard just seemed like such a well rounded player, had it all. In saying that I havn't seen much of Coniglio, Patton etc.

Personally I would take Wingard over anyone in this draft. Having said that he does have a few concussion issues atm. I just see him as having a higher ceiling than Coniglio although maybe a bit more risk associated with his slighter frame. Wingard reminds me a bit of Cyril at u18 level except with better endurance. Great vision, hands and skills and very elusive.

Still early days yet, but if Tyson does go at 3 then it would seem to increase the odds that a good mid option will be available at 8, whether it be a Grigg, WHE, Greene or Sumner.

Do y'all think Longer will go at 7? Given their ruck stocks I'd think it unlikely that the Suns or Port would pick him up, but I'd imagine GWS would need to get in before us...?

Maybe it is a ploy then... GWS ranks the combination of Tyson and Longer above the combination of Wingard and Tyson, so will leave Wingard to let ensure Longer makes it to pick 5.

However if that's the case, why not just pick Longer at pick 3? I'm just confusing myself now.

I cannot see the Gold Coast taking a ruckman with their first selection. A ruck-forward? Maybe, if they don't rate Gorringe, Dixon, Hickey, Nicholls in that role.

If GWS play the draft as strategically as the Gold Coast, they may let a preferred player slide. Last year, Gold Coast were super keen on Gorringe and Lynch. My mail was that Lynch was a must have for them but they didn't think that any of the clubs with picks before #9 would take him (although they got nervous for a little while with Richmond). Same with Gorringe. They rolled the dice, traded away their pick 5 to us (another club looking for midfielders) and used pick 7 to get Caddy. Their two preferred targets that they might have taken with picks 5 and 7 were still available at picks 9-11.

The question for GWS will be whether someone like Longer will be available at pick 7. I don't see Port being interested in a ruckman and, unless they trade a couple away, neither will the Gold Coast. If GWS choose to wait, I still think they could end up with Longer. They could easily take the punt with us too as we're unlikely to go with a ruckman.

At this early stage, Longer is my slider. Won't fall out of the top 10 but, for a guy that is very much considered top 5, he could drop.

because Ports greatest need in midfield talent... so Longer is safe until #5.

I think Gorringe will eventually be traded back to Adelaide or Port...he is Cam Wood mark II.

having smith and longer as the ruck combo is much better for the future

what ever happens I would like to think that the Lions are predictable with our first pick in securing another quality mid/HF or Mid/HB.

In this order I would see us picking

1) Tyson...the next Black
2) Hoskin-Elliot...gun speedy ball winner needed for our wing
3) Buntine...Smart HB with good skills and core strenght. We need one to take over drummonds roles who is always injured
