doesn't black hold the lions record at 15.11? 16 is a bloody good result. Think the best i've seen reported is about a 19. Saw Brett Livermore from the hockeyroos run a 17 once.

And now it's been beaten already... (shades of Harvey and Wilkinson last year).

Stephen Hill's brother just ran a 16.

Has someone measured the track?

Dammit...I really wanted WHE...

Overall, what are people's thoughts on pick 8 in terms of it being a 'must keep' to snare a WHE or are we open to moving it on if it means getting Tippett?

Personally, I am adverse to letting it go and hope we can still achieve our objectives, ie get Tippett if it is an option, without giving it up and use whatever compo we get for Clark for such a purpose.

Probably more a trade question than a draft question but I think we can afford to let it go for the right player. I think Tippett is the right player.

Pick 8 falls into that funny group of draft picks - rarely traded away (unlike picks from about 12 onwards) but you aren't necessarily going to get a superstar like you'd generally expect from a top 5 pick. Drafting has improved so the likelihood of getting a really good footballer is increasing. But your chance of getting a truly elite player isn't super-high. Therefore, when a very good (but not elite) youngish footballer can be snaffled with that pick, I don't see a problem with it.

Put it this way, if we used pick 8 in the draft and got someone who turned out to have Tippett's ability and performance, I'd be satisfied. Not crowing about the draft success but pretty happy all the same. I think Tippett still has improvement in him but, even if he doesn't, he's as good a forward-ruck as there is - not a bad outcome.

Trading pick 8 for Tippett takes the risk out of list management but also takes away the opportunity to obtain a potential superstar. I'm OK with that - I think it is smart list management.

Of course, I'd rather pay less than pick 8 for him but I believe pick 8 for Tippett stands up as a trade.

I think if we get another draft pick, myabe 16 from freo, then it makes it easier to trade pick 8. I do kind of agree with POBT, that it can be good to take the risk out and basically spend that pick on a player. The other bonus is that Tippett is a needed player type, he is good to play right away (unlike drafting a KPP which can take a few years), and he is still young, so still fits in with our rebuild.

Obviously not a simple answer, but I would think the worth of Clark and Tippett aren't too far removed, of course the difference comes down to the worth of each to a prospective suitor, either West Coast or Freo (Clark) and us (Tippett).

I do agree with the above 3 posts, but warming very much to WHE, if he even lasts to pick 8. Sounds like I want the best of both worlds.:D

The Brisbane Lions, who seem to have more people in attendance than any other club, spread themselves all over the venue - some watching the agility tests on one wing, with small groups sitting in other clusters watching both the kicking and handball drills. Lions coach Michael Voss sat on his own for a considerable period, watching Lloyd take the handball tests.

looks like we're working pretty hard for this draft.

although this is a bit amateur of the AFL

But Kennedy deserves to be cut plenty of slack. He was the last of his group of small defenders/forwards to do the test and because of problems with the hardwood floor erected especially for the combine, it was run on the Etihad surface. By the time Kennedy did his test, the surface was badly cut up, and there is little wonder he was unable to keep his feet, In fact, as soon as Kennedy finally completed his run, the testing station was dismantled and relocated 20m away on a fresh piece of turf. Indeed, all the testing on Thursday took place on outer extremes of the Etihad surface, with the main part of the ground off limits ahead of the A-League season opener on Saturday night.

Tippett could be a potential star IMO. Still young enough to get better and is going to give our list a boost moving forward. Pick 8 sounds right but I'd prefer to keep pick 8.

the lions wont be trading pick 8! we need to keep adding young guns to our list. If we land tippett in trade week it will involve the mitch clark trade ;)

I don't quite understand this not trading a first round pick. If you can pick a genuine good footballer who will be a foundation player (especially in a hard position to fill) for our next premiership window - wouldn't you? Obviously you need to do your homework and make sure the player you pick up isn't injured or spud material.

As I alluded to earlier, if we fast forward 5 years and the player we choose with pick 8 turns out to be the equivalent of Tippett, I'd be pretty happy with our drafting. Not ecstatic but satisfied that we got a good un.

Sorry dude, but these kind of categorical statements are my biggest gripe about this place (and the internet in general).I know it's your opinion, but I hate it when it's presented as fact. Truthfully, you surely cannot know for certain?

Same. It does probably comes down to a timing thing. Would we rather have a Tippett like player now "as is" or the same type in five years time? Where does our premiership window lie.

I would say Tippett is well above your average outcome for pick 8. All things being equal, that exchange would be a win.

You could be right Grim - Henderson Versus Tippett - The big T man wins I reckon but then our recruiting wasn't too crash hot back then.

I am totally against trading for Tippett for what we would have to give to get him; draft spots, players, $$$$. Everything that we say on here is hypothetical; players to get drafted, trades, so called premiership windows. The serious side of the matter is we are years away from finals let alone top four, grand finals/premierships. There are only two ways to build your team; draft and trading. Draft for the future and trade for specifics when you have the foundation built. Last years, this and future years drafts are vital to building our list whilst we remain down the bottom. I understand the draft is a lottery (ask Richmond) but it is becoming more and more evident that the right players are drafted earlier. The younger core of the Lions understand their current situation and have stated that they want to build together to take the club forward. Currently four picks in the top 35 or so and possibly five, these are vitally more important than trading for a player who, by the time we will be reallistically a dominant force will be past it.

Small consideration to having a minor man crush on WHE doesn't help the matter either, damn his beep-test! Of course that was if he was even around at pick 8 to which he most probably won't, but then again who knows, aahhhhhhhh, can't take it anymore!!!!

Looking back on pick 8s

2010 - Dyson Heppell
2009 - John Butcher
2008 - Tyrone Vickery
2007 - Lachlan Henderson
2006 - Ben Reid
2005 - Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls
2004 - John Meeson
2003 - Raphael Clarke
2002 - Luke Brennan
2001 - Jimmy Bartel

People, including myself, focus on the upside (eg. a chance to get the next Bartell!!!!) but if you average it all out a 24 year old Tippett is an above average result.
