One issue with drafting a 18 year old ruckman/forward to play straight up (and not going after an older, more experienced player) is the likelihood of injuries due to their bodies not being ready to play AFL football.

It's all well and good saying that we should just stick to the draft but we do really need somebody to replace Clark in the starting side to help Luey out with rucking. In my opinion, it probably shouldn't be a first year draftee.

Agreed, but do we want to pay $700k for Tippett or pick up a cheaper mature ager (e.g. Blake, Renouf, VFL/WFL ruck etc)?

agree...no point blowing our 1st round pick. I would like Tippet if we can get the trade done as part of the Mitch clark trade, but if not we should target cheaper options like those mentioned or mcintosh

No way in hell is Tippett worth pick 8. Didn't sit through a crap season to throw away pick 8 on an inconsistent bloke who has some 'potential'.

Yet, Clark himself was a pick 9...

and now freo supporters are freaking out at the idea at giving up pick 16 for him...yet lions supporters want to give up pick 8 for tippet in a heartbeat! go figure?

I don't WANT to give up pick 8 for him. I'd love to go into draft day with a top 10 pick just as I'd also like to pay 50 bucks for a new iPad. Unfortunately transactions are a two way process.

I still think you are coming unstuck at Clark = Tippett.

It's a fairly fair assessment but unfortunately due to a number of circumstances, namely that Mitch has had two poor years, is out of contract and has been quite vocal about his preferred destination, we aren't going to get his true value.

That doesn't mean that Adelaide are going to think "okay, Clark equals Tippett so whatever the Lions get for Clark is fair compensation for Kurt".

Both Clark and Tippett are worth a least a top 10 pick in this draft. Adelaide are simply find themselves in better circumstances to demand it.

Yes they are potential and I would rather leave it up to the likes of Rob Kerr and Graeme Hadley to unearth that untapped potential from the draft.

This is where I don't understand this argument. What if Kerr decides that Tippett is better than any of the likely options at pick 8? After all, he is entitled to make that decision given his responsibility for list management. And you can't tell me that Hadley isn't involved in that decision making process as well.

So, in essence, the argument is that we trust Kerr/Hadley to pick the right 18yo but we don't trust them to pick the right 24yo?

I don't blindly trust them in either trade or draft but I will say that the faith that I invest in them on draft day is the same as I invest in them in trade week.

What has Tippett done in the past two years though? I admit I haven't seen a lot of him, but from what I've read, I get the impression he has been just as inconsistent as Clark.

I don't know, I am yet to be convinced on Tippett, even though it appears he would be a good get.

Is Peter Yagmoor the young fella I saw running around with the Lions reserves quite a number of times in 09? If so, I recall a number of good games he played where he was more than useful.

Not really the spot to post in a draft discussion thread but follow the link for Kurt Tippett player profile which includes stats.

Similar number of games to Clark - 80 odd more goals (though 2011 output was relatively similar). Probably more pertinent stats to compare but couldn't track them down quickly.

I would like to see us keep pick 8 to target WHE. But realistically, I doubt he'll be picked lower than #6, the beep-test result hurts our chances. I think Port would be pretty keen if they cant get Wingard. Anyone have any ideas on who Gold Coast would be likely to target?

I think they will go for Buntine. They need some HBF.

And then there's the question of whether we can afford to play two pure ruckman in a side, rather than one ruckman and one ruckman/forward.

But anyway, derailing the draft discussion.

Yeah, not sure I see WHE sliding to 8.

Gold Coast at this stage will likely be using Pick 4 in some deal with O'Meara, if that's what gets it done. They've also suggested using it to trade for a bigger body.

Come to think of it, cannot really recall the Suns management people saying that they would actually use the pick for the draft at all. Either for O'Meara or to trade away.

I say keep our picks this year, do an agreement with Tippett that we will make a serious offer for him next year and draft kids. We need to remember that Tippett has a clause in his contract that allows him to go to the club of his choice at the end of next season for a Round 2 draft pick. Plus we have all the compensation picks that we got & traded for to use next year as well.

No one can prove that its just a rumor.

Yeah, he's exciting Dylan.

Sadly, I think Gold Coast have him lined up as a QLD zone selection. :(

Does anyone really believe that to be true. I reckon it is absolute horseshit.

I doubt Tippett has a clause in his contract that allows him to go to the club of his choice at the end of next season for a Round 2 draft pick...Cant see why would the Crows agreed to sign a contract that pays Tippet top dollar and invest in his future, knowing he's going to walk to another club next year...If that were the slightest bit true then you'd want a return on time invested and on club terms a pick higher than a Round 2 ..and instigate a trade him now..All reports are he's an Adelaide required player..

Bugger...I saw his name in the results page of the Draft Combine and thought we may have had him firmly in our sights...what a shame.:(

Don't we or aren't we getting QLD zone selections or am I mixing up the Academy Squad player selections which should come into effect in the next few years?

Although it may be a rumour, it is interesting that no one from Adelaide has refuted it to my knowledge. One theory as to why it was put in place was that Tippett wanted to leave before he signed the previous contract, and this provided him with a way out if he still wanted to depart at contract's end.

Sanderson and co may be hoping they can convince Tippett to remain over the next twelve months, but if the clause did stand, then it assists the Lions to only agree to a 'fair' deal.

Carlton haven't committed to Dylan Buckley as a f/s. Would lol if he became our Marc Murphy if we were to draft him.

edit - Buckley said he's happy to make it on his own or something like that.
