About the draft
To be eligible, players must be 18 on or before April 30 the year following a National Draft. Players who are not 18 before December 31 of a draft year (17 and a half) must be contracted for a minimum of two years

I just confused myself before. The year following a national draft, would mean to be eligible for the 2011 draft you would have to turn 18 by April 30, 2012.

Mayes is not 18 until May 20, 2012. Not 2011 as I first thought.

The December 31st thing is just about contract length from what that above quote says.

Jesse lonergan from tassie will be a chance. Powerfully built midfielder/half forward who won tassies best player in the under 16s. Plays for launceston seniors and won best first year player. Excelled in all games and was frequently in there best players

Yeah good call, cant remember if he is 93 or 94 born though. Played an underage game against him before he went up to the seniors this year, would've comfortably had 35 off a wing. He wasn't Tassie's best player in the under 16 carnival though, that went to my teammate Henry Schade who would have to be a massive chance to go this year in my opinion. :thumbsu:

The AFL really need to update that page on the website, as it's at least 2 years out of date.

The current rule, as per the AFL Player Rules September 2010 edition is as follows:
4.5 Player Eligibility for National Draft
4.5.1 Players Eligible to be Drafted

A Player who has nominated in accordance with these Rules is eligible
to be drafted if he also satisfies the following requirements:
(a) the Player must have attained the age of 18 years or will attain the age of 18 years on or before the 31st day of December next following the date of drafting;
The April 30th date is now completely irrelevant and has been since 2009.

In short, a player is first eligible for the draft in the year of his 18th birthday.

Thanks, afl.com.au:rolleyes:

So in the end, Mayes isn't 18 until 2012 so he is not a 2011 draft prospect as I first thought.

Pretty sure they shared the award or he may have got most valuable. He was co captain any ways. Born in 1994. Good mates with him at school, in my year group. Will play afl one day.

Interesting, what sort of game style does he play? Anyone know if he still plays of the wing in seniors?

So in the end, Mayes isn't 18 until 2012 so he is not a 2011 draft prospect as I first thought.

Will be the first uncompromised draft for several years. No more new teams being able to have pre-access to the draft pool. Mayes would have previously fit into this group.

Not entirely. The 17yos that GC and GWS were allowed to select in the year preceeding their first main draft participation were limited to those born between 1 January and 30 April.

yes he does, and does it very well. Wing/half forward.

When we played together last year, we used to rotate between wing and half back. He had very good disposal, mine wasn't so great so when I got tired at half back, he comes in and dominates, setting up play.

Yeah, they were definitely the state's best two players in the carnival, no doubt, Lonergan is a gun. If he's 94 born he wont be eligible til 2012 though. On Schadey, expect him to play mostly in the ones when he isnt playing Mariners. And must have played against you mate last year if you played Launy 18s?

Yea but I only played 6 games, broke my hand and ribs pretty bad so that was my season. Who'd you play for?

Can anyone give a state by state run down on possible draft prospects. Are there any QLD, NT and WA boys you know of?

TBH I think the Tassie Mariners will struggle a bit this year. There will be some good players obviously, but I doubt there will be any the same caliber of a Josh Green. Schade is a good prospect, probably needs some more meat on the bones though. He'll be up against some big fellas this year

What's your opinion of Jacob Martin-Thurlow? He played a bit of seniors in 2009 but spent last season in the 18s. When I have seen him play he has looked the goods. He dominated the finals series. Can't believe he wasn't in the Mariners.

Interesting player. Hasn't got great skills which is what held him back, other than that I'm not really sure why he was left out.

Aside from the names already mentioned previously in this thread (Longer, Coniglio, Adams) Sam Kerridge, Darcy Wathchorn, Sam Gordon, Michael Bussey, Jonathan Patton, Gerald Ugle, Max Duffy, Jackson Allen, Matthew Buntine, Adam Tomilson and Elliot Kavanagh, Josh Wadhuter, Lewis Hender, Mitchell Grigg, Jordan Lockyer, Shane Kersten, Jai Sheahan are some names that are either from the AIS and/or played in the 2010 U18 Championships that are eligible next year (CMIIW or missed any 2011 eligible AIS players)

mate some good names in there who arent as well known. personally looking fwd to seeing Wadhunter, Tomilson, Patton, Hender and Wingard's form through the year.

Billy Longer (Northern Knight)
Todd Elton (Dandenong Stingrays)

Two best big guys coming through the TAC, both dominated games this year.

Billy Longer has been the best ruckman in Victoria in his age cohort since about under 13s. It's not so fashionable these days to draft ruckmen early. Certainly it's still early, and form and injuries can obviously change perceptions, but right now I'd be surprised if Longer lasts long in the 2011 draft.

One that will be a definate in the first round will be Hayden Crozier from the ranges.
Seen him play a few times last year and was an absolute stand-out as a bottom age player, even though he is born late december and just misses out on being bottom age this year.
Midfield/Half-Forward who is very quick and agile.
Runs the 20m sprint in 2.84 seconds and can jump like a ruckman.
Have also seen him stand on blokes heads and i have a photo for you's to have a look at.
