Besides Hayden, and possibly Pearce as depth, we haven't really lost anything at all there.

Yeah, not sure on that one... I should have left him off until it's made official I guess - I just assumed and then never went back to change it. But I will now as it does change the make-up of draftees...

Monty from the Fanfooty website used to create "Depth Charts" for each team, grouping team lists into functional categories - I had a crack at doing one for the current signed up list below. Where a player plays in more than one position, I've tried to put him into his dominant category (some of which are debateable). Interesting in the context of trying to prioritise where you'd allocate the 5 empty senior list slots in an ideal world.

Key Defenders
Luke McPharlin
Antoni Grover
Alex Silvagni
Dylan Roberton
Peter Faulks

1st 3 players listed are solid, with Grover likely in the departure lounge at season end - would definitely look for +1 player. Might be Dawson.

Small Defenders
Greg Broughton
Paul Duffield
Adam McPhee
Nick Suban

Broughton is solid - the other 3 tend to be a bit flaky. Injury free, Suban should add a lot. Would add +1. Leon?

Key Forwards
Matthew Pavlich
John Anthony
Michael Johnson
Gavin Roberts

Weakest category in team - if Pav gets injured we lack a reliable tall. Would target 2 tall forwards including hopefully Kersten.

Small Forwards
Hayden Ballantyne
Chris Mayne
Michael Walters
Josh Mellington
Matt De Boer

Pretty well catered for.

Inside Midfielders
Michael Barlow
David Mundy
Nick Lower
Viv Michie

Would like another A grade clearance player - Barlow & Mundy are arguably more outside types. Would like another slightly more skillfull Lower.

Outside Midfielders
Nathan Fyfe
Stephen Hill
Anthony Morabito
Jayden Pitt
Tendai Mzungu
Jesse Crichton

Our strong suite - particularly if you add Barlow & Mundy to the list.

Rucks
Aaron Sandilands
Jonathan Griffin
Kepler Bradley
Zac Clarke

Our other strength.

Taggers
Ryan Crowley
Garrick Ibbotson
Jay Van Berlo

Could do with another tagger although we have got McPhee.

I think you should have Keps as a forward not a ruck. My thinking is that he is far more likely to be included in the side if a forward gets injured rather than a ruck...

Yeah there look to be a few players that are probably in the wrong category. It might simply be easier if a medium forward and medium defender category are added.

Unless we draft someone ready made who can play FF from the get go, I'd have Kep played there. Seen a few people's Best 22 for next season and quite a few people have Mayne at FF.

Much rather him play as the 3rd target, he just isn't a suitable option for FF; Keplar at least can clunk a mark and kick straight and I'd give him an extended run up foward to see if he can reproduce his early season form from this year.

I think having Sandi, Clarke and Bradley in the same team would work provided the former two handle the bulk of ruck duties and leave Bradley up forword rucking only occasionally.

Agreed I'd like to see Bradley at FF and with 2 ruckmen in the side I'd like to see him left there as our second target with Pav and Mayne 3rd.

I'm interested about what happens with the second ruck position. To me Harvey seemed to play favourites and didnt give Griffen a fair go when he deserved a chance early in the season, not that Clarke didnt deserve his chance when he got it. However with Lyon in charge I think there is now a more even competition for that second ruck spot and form will determine which of Griffen/ Clarke get a game which is a good thing for the team IMO.

Chris, I've been following your picks on the BF Phantom Draft board and I just wonder whether you believe that We're actually likely to draft this way?? All due respect, but some of your selections thus far have struck me as a little left field and given some of the criticism levelled at our recruiters for not picking up Darling last year, I wonder whether you think it's more likely they'll go for some of the "safer" options this year?

Frost and Newman weren't left field. Ellis-Yolmen perhaps, but that was because I think I could get a similarly talented KPF at 58 as I could have at 29.

I think a lot of teams will rate players differently this year - in the phantom, I've been drafting on my ratings. So while selections may seem left field to the public, I'm betting the recruiters will be very happy.

I quite like slightly unexpected selections in a mock draft. It forces out the ratings of others, and sometimes reveals needs as opposed to best available thinking.

If you polled docker posters I think majority would love Kersten at out first, but if he is gone, which is likely/possible, where do we go? In this draft I would have thought MacInness would have been up, but taking Frost makes me re-assess.

Newman did that in a bigger way. He is maybe a reach (from bf opinions) based on readiness, but not based on talent.

Not a lot of interest if everyone bangs out the obvious.

I have no doubt our drafting people will pull a few surprises like last year with Michie and Mellington.

So far I have only heard of Kersten, Ellis and Boseley as being rumoured to being in Freo's sights. Hell - what chance of all three?

what are everyones views on ellis??? i just watched his highlights and he looks like a real impressive player. he is listed as a medium defender but in his highlights he is the centre square as well so obviousley has that potential as well. would fil a need for us as a medium defender but could also add some much needed spark and flare to our midfield. looks to have god pace and just keeps running and chasing with deseration. for me i would love:
16- Kersten/mcciness
20- ellis/smith
29- Frost/dobosz
Thoughts????

Reminds me of Luke Ball.

To me he really reminds me of Luke Shuey. Quick but not extremely quick, can play both inside and outside, good skills and can burst through a pack. For mine he is a perfect fit for us and if both Kersten and McCiness are gone by 16 i would be tempted to use our first pick on him. If Mcciness and Kersten were both to be gone by our first pick i would be tempted to even go:
16- Elliss
20- Lockyer
29- Frost

Can anyone who has seen Tom Sundberg play tell me more about him? From what i have read he would ge a bood inside player we could pick up with a late pick.

I really think this is the type of player we need to complement our other midfielders.

Chris25 - What do you think?

Chris, based on this conversation I have re-watched the Newman highlights video (I know, it probably doesn't tell the whole story). It really confirms your high-rating and review of him on the BF Phantom Draft. But he seems a fairly slight build. As a recruiter (particularly a Freo one), would there be concerns he'd turn out to be another Son-Son? Or is he particularly hard at it for a little guy?

Doubt he'd turn out similar to Walters, not that that would be a bad thing though. But Newman has genuine speed, and he is a tough kid. He'll throw him into the contest and tackle hard.

Ok, thanks for that. Not knocking Walters by the way, just saying that someone of his build is pretty easily moved off the ball in contested footy.
