One player I would like to hear peoples thoughts on Joel Houghton?

Obviously highly talented (taken at pick no. 36, '09) and can obviously play (represented WA in that years championships).

He hasnt, as a debut out of contract player with a track record of being able to play, I would consider him as a rookie pick.

Give us a year to look at him and evaluate wheter we think he is going to make it or not

Had big wraps on him when drafted - Think something must have gone wrong for him not to get a senior game this year.

Adam Cooney on the footy show last night seemed confident re: his knee cleanout/re-alignment & expects to be back training well before christmas.
Now the interesting part for me was when he was asked about Callan Ward's defection for the money, his answer was an emphatic "money talks" & then went on to say he would consider offers if approached by another club.
If the club gets the nod from the surgeon & Doc Reid i'd be in his ear quick smart if i was Jimmy, cause IMO he'd be the perfect fit for our clubs needs.
Watson,Hocking & Cooney elevates us from one of the worst to one of the best midfielder in one foul swoop, we started our uncompromising approach to success last yr now lets keep that ruthless momentum rolling.
Seems some discontent with Higgens over on the WB board as well.

A recruit who was a gun two years ago but struggled with a knee injury since?
Interesting.
I can't think of any possible reason why not.

It's worked really well the last 3 times we've tried it.

Cooney at his best would be amazing but there's no guarantee that he'll ever be the same player again. Seems an awfully risky proposition plus you'd have to give up quite a bit.

Joel has had a horror run with injuries in his two years at the club. Most Freo fans were very surprised when he was delisted. Expect him to be rookied.

On another matter, your boy Howlett is on Freo's radar according to rumours over here. Whats he like? Havent watched many Dons games this year.

Cooney and Higgins are good players but injury prone and it amazes me people put them in their Super Coach or Dream Teams

He's got one year left on his current deal.

Adding to Whomb's comment, he's got nice skills on both sides. Often used as a tagger.

Did someone say Howlett for Fyfe? Done :D

On a more serious note, Howlett is a seriously under rated player to those outside Essendon. A real hard working midfielder who is not shy to get his hands dirty and he has tidy disposal.

I reckon many at Essendon would not want to see him go after the season he's had.

Rated Howlett after 2010 (Knights didn't play him enough for me), rate him even more now. Wouldn't want to trade him as I doubt we'd get anywhere near his value. Best 22 player.

He is a very good player on his day, and he is becoming more consistent. One of play 7 players to have played in every game this year, and never looking like getting dropped.

His positives are: Strong body, great tackler (6.5 a game, with 10+ 5 times this year), good inside and at clearances and also a good user of the ball. He takes the game on and has a good goose-step/change of pace that he uses to find more room. Is a brave player who often turns his man and runs inside and delivers well by foot. Has a good understanding with Ryder in the middle.

His negatives are: Doesn't get enough of the ball as yet, never cracking 30 touches (29 v GC his best effort), and can often have a game in the low teens.

He has only played 37 games of AFL and I would expect him to step up another notch again next year. Could hold down Hocking's role next year and let Hocking off the chain.

#1 for tackles
#2 for clearances
#2 for contested possessions
68% DE, a goal ever second game

That's a really good summary of Howlett's game. :thumbsu:

Ben Ross is an interesting one. I'm a big fan of the kid, and has been one that I've kept my eye on since he came into the league. One of those explosively-quick running midfielders, has just been delisted after 4 years at North, making him 22yrs old. Certainly think he is worth a shot, for those of you that haven't seen a lot of him, he tore us up in one of the two Bendigo games shown on TV for the year.

Certainly doesn't hurt that he is a brother of our Michael, but regardless of that fact, I'd certainly be having a good look, very good option for a rookie spot.
