Re: Rivalries & Bets

My point is more that there was certainly strength to the idea of picking your team around the byes, and it wasn't necessarily outweighed by the fact that one particular pairing actually worked out quite well. FWIW, I started with both Swan and Pendlebury, but no other shared premium byes, though I traded into a few once I was happy with my cover.

Same, although I wasnt too concerned about having shared premiums and the byes as I was confident in my cover and mpp. I started Fisher/Goddard, Swan/Pendles and bought in ROK with Goodes and Scotland with Gibbs and Fyfe with Pavlich. I was actually hoping for an advantage with this as POD as I noticed a lot of people were shying away from doing this initially. My theory was to take the best premiums available and then sort the byes out when I come to them.

ROK's role was a talking point early as we were not convinced he wasnt going to head back to tagging like last year as he was doing a great job and KJack was breaking out as a free running defender. There was too many unknowns for me on ROK at the start of the year.

Heppel was interesting, I thought most of us took him; however when you're looking to make way for some cash you can't be too harsh on those that elected for Stanley in place of Heppel.

I can see why Curnow wasnt popular early...Way too many unknowns and like other said some quality players lying in wait. Before seasons start you couldnt tell me that Curnow would have McLeans spot for the year!

LMAO, I still have J. Irons in my team and you people biatch about LOLRicho!

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Sitting 15th in DT, still have Lester clogging up my backline. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

LMAO, 18th in DT with Coad stretching his Hammy in my backline!

Re: Rivalries & Bets

The byes certainly played a big factor looking at the numbers...
30/32 went with Franklin but only 5/32 started with Pavlich numbers that are clearly caused by the shared bye with everyone having Franklin - a further 9/32 had Rioli causing a massive under representation for Pav.

another interesting one is 30/32 with Grimes but only 7/32 with Broughton when they were at similar price and risk levels seems to be a disproportionate selection of grimes

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Most importantly, how'd u and PK fare this week??

I knocked out a small win this week. PK would be unfazed by the amount though with 5 weeks still to go.

Think I have a 290 odd point lead. To be confident from here on in, he'd want to win 3 if not 4 of the next 5. If I jag next week for whatever reason, I think i'm a strong show due to the fact that he is running out of weeks.

Still think injuries and player rests in the last 3 weeks will decide it. Who gets hurt the most by bad luck loses!

There were big (and legitimate) concerns over Broughton's role, as evinced in his rubbish form over the first half of the season.

Yes, Broughton selectors got very lucky with the sheer number of injuries to Freo's mids. Released him from more defensive roles that curtailed his scoring in the first half of the season.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Curnow in only one of the 32 starting SCE teams, that's so low looking back on it.

In YSCC, a lot of us lost track of each other on that last afternoon before lockout once we saw the round 1 teams. I'd say most of us jumped off Curnow at the last minute. I swapped him to Atley very late that day. When I posted that night after Curnow's great round 1 score I thought I would have been the only idiot that got rid of him. Turned out a lot of us had made the same decision.

Most YSCC teams had Curnow in their squads most of the pre-season.

His scoring pre and post his injury has been interesting to contrast. What if it had gone the other way!

Re: Rivalries & Bets

That said, one of our highest ranking teams did not start Curnow and didn't trade him in at round 3 either. He stayed strong on the discipline of not sideways trading. Not not having Curnow (he had Irons instead!) didn't hurt him at all as it turned out. I think the round 3 rookie rush can lead to unnecessary trading.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

I think the above is true for this year in peticular with the extra bench players/cows we were given.
I was in a similar position stuck with irons (and still am) and didnt trade for curnow going off the theory that we have always managed to complete sides with two cash cows per line so doing it with three should be easy.
That being said if next year it gets reverted back to two bench players then the decision to not trade for curnow would pretty much kill your season...

Yeah it's a good point, I know I jumped on Tapscott and Libba after a couple of games each thinking they both looked the goods but really they were quiet disappointing in the end. I guess it changes every season though, what influenced me to jump on these guys was my success in season before in DT with getting on Rockliff and Pods in the same week before they rose in price. Both of these guys were premiums in the forward line pretty much and I got them for a rookie price, so I then had the choice to move them after a ~200k profit to a premium of play them (Rockliff) and get better scores then what others were getting from their premiums.

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Bit of a struggle trying to put a team together this week.

  • Hibberd gone indefinitely
  • Enright out (didnt he miss the last GC clash...bastard!)
  • Jacobs out
  • Sylvia out (but is an emergency which is strange if he has been dropped for disciplinary reasons)
  • R Murphy (bye)
My defence 4 weeks ago looked a strong asset with Hibberd, Jacobs and Strauss providing significant depth. This has totally disappeared and left me open to bad luck. Having Strauss really hurts as his upper ceiling is 55-60 and his typical range is 40-50! Why didnt i get the pooman who looks so strong atm.

How are you set up PK? Ablett and Enright out with some doubt over Hodge? You got the pooman for Enright and didak for Ablett. Mungzu on standby for the hodge/podge?

Captaincy choice?
I have sucked recently in choice. Cox/Judd/Johnson/Pendleberries/Swan???
Right now i'm leaning towards big coxy vs the tiges! He is going to kill them over there!

I'd just like to say a quick thankyou to Dal Santa clause and Pendleburies who have wrested control of the midfield from Ablett and Selwood! Long may their reign continue and keep me in this fight to the death!

Re: Rivalries & Bets

I frustratingly went Cox as well! I have missed so many points this year due to bad (C) and emergencies. ~250 points. 4 weeks. If I hit a deficit in any of these weeks I think I'm done.

I can see you are setting up your defence in the event you lose :thumbsu:. You have a great knack of emphasizing your own instances of bad luck :D. I think if we made a list I could go toe-to-toe with you for most of the season.

If I lose I will tip my hat fairly. If I win, i'll still tip my hat as well :thumbsu:

As for the run home, it is a beauty. You have the best squad, I have a mediocre points lead that isn't quite enough given the squad differences! You want 100+ victories...I'm only trying to concede < 50 per week!

I seriously dont know what is going to happen. Everyone keeps talking about Pendlebury having a rest which just sends shivers up my spine! NO, NO NO!

Anyway, must dash. I need to work on my speeches, one for winning, and my ultiimate loser's speech which will bring tears .

PS
You got to make your move this weekend PK. I'm forced to play the lobbster in the ruck. I mean how the heck did i end up with the lobbester in my team! Seriously, you got some voodoo doll or somefink

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Haha mate no defence necessary. I was being philosophical, not complaining. You can't really complain about something you don't have control over. You have been the better team. You have already lowered my colours, and deservingly so. (I'm not even going to mention my POD (C) pulling 20 and getting subbed in the first quarter ;))

Honestly though, you have deserved it. And even if I were to win, it will be due to luck not skill. You have put me in my place, I assumed this was going to be shelling peas. How wrong I was...

Re: Rivalries & Bets

Judd Magic, what happened mate? Losing your BigFooty Div 01 league match, how is that possible?

*Insert excuses here*
