Brisbane and Sydney prior to GC and GWS entering the competition had 9 rookie spots available. All other teams 7.
As a consequence of GWS receiving the draft assistance the AFL increased the ability of all other clubs to recruit 2 extra rookies. Thus we in 2012 can have 11 rookie spots available.

Brisbane and GC can pre-select up to three rookies from QLD in draft type order. The lowest finishing team gets first pick and so on. This year GC has the first pick in the mini QLD draft.
These three QLD rookies are inclusive of the 11 spots we have. We may choose not to select any and use our picks on other interstate players.

As of today our rookie list looks like this.

1. Brown (outside the list - veteran)
2. Black (outside the list - veteran)
3. Harvey
4. Dyson
5. McKeever
6. Newell (NSW scholarship upgrade, although this has not been officially confirmed)
7. QLDer ?
8. QLDer ?
9. QLDer ?
10. ?
11. ?

In the last few years the club has chosen not to use all our allocated rookie spots due to financial constraints. With 1.9 mil loss recently announced I can't envision us using all the rookie spots. The club may also decide to leave some spots open again to make easier strategic maneuvering for next year's super draft.

could someone tell me the picks we have, I'd like Frost with either Bolger or dobosz.

Does anyone know the rookie draft order??

I know GWS have the first pick, but do they have more than one ala National Draft...

Very little info anywhere on number of selections/draft order etc

GWS do not have more than one draft pick in the rookie draft.
The order is uncompromised.
1. GWS
2. GCS
3. Port
4. Lions ...etc... as per premiership table position.

Ripe Rookies

THE 2011 NAB AFL Draft is in the books, but there's still a lot of footballing talent ripe for the picking at December's pre-season and rookie drafts.

Clubs looking to bolster their tall stocks are in luck because there are plenty of raw key prospects available who were overlooked at the national draft, but will be well worth a rookie spot that will allow them time to add some polish to their games.

What are people's opinions on the options for a key defender? Do we need a monster CHB who can use his height and athletic ability to purely outsize opposition forwards or could we maybe get away with a guy who is only 191-192cm but appears to be a more intelligent footballer? The reason I ask is that I think Brody Mihocek should be given a shot on our rookie list, he seems to be one of the better defenders, IMO the most clever, out of the ones left. I don't believe he tested all that well at the combine, so he's not all that athletically gifted and he's only 192cm, so not a gorilla. But he looks like a better mark, reader of the flight and reader of the play than some other prospects like Frost or Boseley. He was U18 AA fullback too. I realise that we probably would have taken him in the ND had we really seen him as a legitimate prospect, but I just don't see much in the other KPDs. Thoughts?

Im of the school of thought that football smarts always trumps athletic ability, but a combination of both is definitely preferred, seeing as it's no good, knowing where the football is going but being unable to get there due to a lack of speed. Guys like Lance Franklin are that rare mix of smarts & athletic ability and unfortunately they are the kind of players that KPD have to line up on. I think for that gorilla role, athletic ability is probably more important than smarts, due to the negating role they must play, in preventing their opponent in getting a kick. However it is pretty crucial that your gorilla is surrounded by players with footy smarts, to help with the third man up, loose defenders, and clearing the football out. So I like the players with athletic ability, but believe they are restricted in potential defensive roles.

As for Mihocek, I like him, and would love for us to pick him, but he is very speculative, and may not be the right fit considering the amount of players around the 190cm mark that we have added the past few seasons.

I'd also like us to grab a ruckman from a state league around the 20-23 age range and hopefully John McKenzie from Tassie, I see a bit of Leigh Adams from the Roos in him and think we could get a bit of value out of him.

Should we read much into the fact that we haven't sought permission from the AFL for any players to train with us?

Obviously we can assume that any of 2011's delisted players won't be getting a 2012 rookie spot, but can we draw any further conclusions?

Yeah the fact that we do have a few players around 190cm was probably a big factor. Frost is a better height and an excellent athlete but he doesn't scream football smarts to me. You're right about needing another ruckman, preferably one who can play straight away.

What are people thought on taking a Mature ager KPD in Kyle Hartigan? Can play straight away.

I'd rather go for one a bit younger to develop. I dont' think we need someone who can play right away, we probably have Goose and McKeever as depth at this stage.

For a CHB, i think you can get away with being in the low 190's, but you need to have other attributes to make up for it, either athletic ability, or really good footy smarts. Even a capable CHB that's 191 and reads the play well can get taken to town. They will generally be on the more mobile opposition forwards, so they need to be decent athletically.

We not only need a genuine CHB, but we do need to start looking 5 years down the road and start at least thinking about who our next FB will be. I would be shocked if we don't take a KPD in the draft.

Got any video footage of Hartigan or Dalton? After reading up on them I like the sound of Hartigan better. Both the same height and they seem to be similar types. Would need to see some footage to make better judgement though. Dalton's 25 odd too, at that age you would wonder why a guy who is supposed to be the VFL's best fullback, hasn't already been given a shot.

Well, as I can't find footage of Hartigan and as you say he's been in the system for 3 years. I'll take your word for it. As for a rookie spot if the club doesn't have the opportunity to get a better calibre player who isn't a KPD beforehand we should be aiming for that. I'm hopeful that we can get our quality KPD prospect in next years draft.

Just read a write up and watched some video of Luke Crozier.
198cm
89kg
Key Defender
D.O.B: 20/10/89
Plays for Old Carey F.C in the VAFA.
Is the 2nd cousin of recent Fremantle draftee Hayden Crozier and 1st cousin of recent Gold Coast draftee Henry Schade.
Allegedly quite athletically gifted, not unlike Hayden. Take's a good grab, can really jump, great spoil. Not bad speed for his size. Looks like he needs a but more muscle.
Have only seen one video on youtube which probably showcases his talents in 2-3 matches.
Once again however, is 22 and the better prospects don't usually slip through the cracks till they are that age.

For me I would go with:

Qlders

Sam Michael - legit ruck size, can play some KP and really really wants it. Put some back into the Qld system and take him. Will be very handy in the NEAFL next year for us. I think we take Michael or Brewer.

Geary - not sure if he is eligible but playing in the NEAFL I am assuming so. Rocky mark II. Get this kid into a system and I think he could develop into a very good player. Again would help strengthen the ressies team a lot next year.

Rookie Draft

We have to go tall especially if we only have two picks. I would be looking closely at:

Hartigan - can come in and play straight away at NEAFL level and be a rock at the back. We obviously need a decent FB reserve and he is as good as there is that is right to go. Decision making is the issue with him but really we have Merrett in our first team so its not like we are not used to that at FB.

Dobosz - really smart forward who is a big time goal kicker. Late convert, never done a preseason = lots of upside. Measured a bit short (190.6) and did not test particularly well athletically but has never trained for the tests either. I am all for giving him a go and taking him with our first pick. More tricks than any of our other forward prosects except Karnezis.

Raikiwasa - young, strong probably FB. Little short but good leap and long arms. Fiji heritage. Would be a good guy to stash on the rookie list and develop.

Larry Owen - 196cm KP (probably a CHB) who runs a 15.10 beep (better than the previous record of 15.8). Needs some polish but that is what the rookie list is for. Slowish off the mark but very good top end speed. Skills are not terrible.

Sam Frost - surprised that someone didn't take him in the main thing. Very athletic late convert. Probably lacks a bit in the physical aspects of the game. Plenty to work with though.

Jack Frost - overlooked last year but the penny dropped earlier in the year and he has put his head down and bum up. Not quite as athletic as his brother but still very good. Played well for Williamstown this year. Sure to be a Bulldogs target.

Bussey - great height and athleticism. Not terrible in any real way and I am surprised someone didn't pick him up in the ND. I would not have any problem with him if we go him.

If we went with a small I would like John McKenzie from Tasmania. Tas capt, Div 2 player of hte year, AA. Hard ball winner with reasonable athleticism. Someone will take him and if it was us I would not be disappointed.

I think if we do use our QLD priority it will be on Michael. Bit of a worry for Sam that there hasn't been much word around the traps. This sort of thing usually filters out.

Mentioned a few times that the Lions have been tracking Jack Hannath & Kennrick Tyrell as potential rucks for our rookie list. I think us taking Hudson could spell the end for Tyrell though as he is a bit older.

I think it would be a great idea to get a decent sized defender on our rookie list, even if it is just for the ressies. If you have a good solid 2nds team, the cream is going to rise to the top and over flow into the seniors. It doesn't help when players are playing out of position. Not only do we start developing a KPD, but we get someone to hold down the spot in the 2nds.

Like the sounds of Sam Michael Quigley, probably the kind of kid we would go for as a developing ruck type. Probably handy if he is ruck sized by can play as a KPP, suits the modern game better. The 4th ruckman on the list needs to be a bit of a long shot, because realisticly, even with injuries you're probably not going to play them in the seniors anyway.

You do always like a tassie boy, isn't Dobosz from tassie, or am i thinking of someone else ?
