for those who think brisbane need to go tall i do agree but whats the point if none of the recruiters rate them???

i know i would much prefer another redden for example rather than a spaanderman thats for sure

Really hoping whoever we pick we get a genuine tall KPP, preferably a defender. Don't mind what end he plays at all that much, but I'd rather not see another bloke around the 190cm mark, regardless of his football ability. We will need someone who isn't going to get monstered by the Franklin, Cloke, Reid and Hurley types. A mature aged ruck/utility wouldn't hurt either

Hi guys, sorry to intrude on your board but love talking about my VFL boys.

Hartigan is a strong bodied full back who is able to play on the bigger forwards as he has done in the VFL. He was a star junior defender who some touted to go in the top 30 - 40 of his draft year (2009) but eventually fell off the radar due to some queries over his offensive abilities from defence.

No doubting the talent is there, he is strong overhead, good 1:1 and has really working on his kicking and offensive capabilities. Did struggle with injury this year which kept him to a lowly 3 (2 senior, 1 reserves) games this year.

Saw his game earlier this year against Williamstown, where Hartigan kept former Bulldog Mitch Hahn goal less and won his battle convincingly.

Could do worse than him, but I feel there is some better mature aged options available out there (Tom Lee/WA, Tom Bell/Qld, Trent Shinners/Vic, Brad Mangan/Vic).

Will be interesting to see if his 'credits' from his junior days come into play and see him picked up and given every chance to develop.

Saw him in a game earlier this year that really made me stand up and take notice, cutting off attack after attack and won his battle against now former Bulldog, Mitch Hahn convincingly.

Can Gavin Urquhart be taken as a QLD rookie? I just think he's worth a roll of the dice. We know he can play at AFL level, he's only 23 and if he has grown up some an injury free season could see him be an awesome, cheap acquisition IMO. And I am sure Vossy would enjoy pinching one from under Brads nose lol, with very little risk or downside if it goes pear shaped. Bring the boy home.

From all reports Brad will be delighted if Voss decides to waste a pick on Gavin, so not so sure about pinching him from under Brad's nose. Gavin was put on a "Free To A Good Home" list during trade week and no one wanted him.

Yes I know all that and if he was't out of favour at Nth then we wouldn't even be having this discussion, but like I said if he comes good it will be a heist, if it doesn't what have we really lost. No one knows if it would be a waste or not, only time will tell. I just think at his age he's worth a thought. Take no risks make no progress. Small down side / possibly good upside, and Nth pay most of his wage either way.

;)

Interesting a couple of the mocks on the Phantom Draft board have us picking up Michael Florio. From descriptions he's got elite pace and agility, as well as a long accurate left foot. Good height for a wing man also.

Wonder if he can be an option for us? What has caused him to be overlooked in the last couple of years? IIRC irel you were a fan, thoughts?

At the time it was certainly bewildering to understand why Florio was overlooked. He clearly possesses skills an AFL club can build upon. I believe at the time he was seen as not having sufficient physicality and aggression in his game. His coach now believes he has added those elements to his game. I believe he is worth a shot on our rookie list. But that depends on how many we intend to take.
If we are only taking two, we may go for needs and unfortunately our cupboard is now overflowing with the 190cm midfielders.

Players I like us to consider for the rookie list are;

Cam Williams from Geelong Falcons
196cm KPP who came late into TAC and recruiters did not have enough time to have a good look (perhaps)
Very mobile, good skills and can also pinch hit in the ruck.

Damien Mascitti from Oaklegh Chargers
190Cm :) Forward
Best and Fairest winner at the Chargers, possesses Rockliff like footy smarts, has Yeo like skills on both side of his body and has an eye for goals. Kicked plenty in the TAC as a forward. (I am puzzled why he missed out in the draft)

Michael Musicka - Tasmania
185cm versitile player that can play almost anywhere but is mostly seen as a medium midfielder. Michael has speed and grunt, and can do the miraculous with regularity.

Athleticism and conditioning + not playing champs would have contributed to Mascitti's downfall.

I would like to see us rookie Justin Clarke from SA, looks a decent CHB prospect.

Dobosz and a KPD, but there appears to be plenty available.

Let's just say I'm going to be slightly pissed if we pass on rookie spots again.

I agree it would be good to invest in more options, dlanod, but it seems our current strategy is to limit ourselves to 46 players, so I am expecting just the two picks.

You'd think the club would rookie a ruckman. 3 rucks plus McKeever isn't enough and I'm still haunted by the day Tim Notting had to ruck.

Or Brennan...

Not much you can do about that though. You simply can't have 4 quality rucks on the list in case of injury, rucks just won't hang around if they aren't getting games, and the modern game only allows 1 true genuine ruck.

Your best off having a few KPP who can pinch hit if needed. We could take 2 KPP, with 1 of them being a KPP/ruck. You need to have that versatility in the KPP to cover the ruck, instead of trying to just have lots of ruckman on the list.

Looking to next year, with McKeever as 4th ruck, we have enough cover, but we don't have Hudson for long, so a mature age ruck would be a good idea on the rookie list to take his spot. I think with Longer still being young, it needs to be mature age player so they can play right away if needed.

If we're only taking 2 picks, KPP/ruck and key defender should be the way to go, for list balancing reasons.

When Graeme Hadley started out he picked footballers over athletes. Rich, Redden, Cornelius and of course Rockliff. Last year he still chose good footballers, but a couple with more athletic attributes. Brad Harvey would be perhaps the first athlete>footballer guy he's drafted.

This year it seems in Yeo and Wearden he's picked another couple of guys who are very athletic. Wonder what he'll do for the taller aspects. His track record in selecting taller guys at the moment is less proven.

only because his midfield selections have been pretty much if not 100% spot on would be good if talls where the same but then he would probably end up getting poached by one of the big 4

and if i had to choose which kind of recruiter i would want i would prefer one whos better at picking mids than talls not that i dont rate talls or anything

Reading the reviews on both of these guys, they seem to be adequate to solid footballers who happen to be very good athletes. Much more than the athletes who have little to no footballing background (maybe a couple of years) that we've seen many clubs feast on in the last five or so years. Still striking a balance there.

Quigs I just had Steve Rusca brought to my attention.
An 18 year old from Central Districts, described to me as a player with sublime skills. Seems to have been overlooked in the draft. 182cm defender that runs and carries the ball in similar fashion to Docherty without the penetration in his kicks as the Doc. As we are a bit deficient in the small sized defenders he may be a perfect developing rookie. Can you shed some light if you know more of him?

Justin Clarke from SA apparently starts training with Brisbane today as a 'train-on' in the lead up to the Rookie Draft.

Sounds like both parties must be keen for him to come to Brisbane to train:

"WORD is out that there's a 17-year-old centre-half-back in the bush who stands 6ft 5'' and moves like Dustin Fletcher. "

"Two weeks after the reserves game Clarke was studying at home when an interstate AFL club called.

``I thought the bloke was joking,'' Ian said.

``But he wanted to talk to Justin to find out whether AFL was something he was serious about.''"

Anyone who has the potential to develop into a footballer who will play CHB / Full Back in 3 - 5 years.

I think that we are "good" in all other areas, but we desperately need to rework / inject more into our defensive half. We need another Michael / Leppitsch type combination or for those of us with longer memories another Pert / Roos to build a backline around.

In order to do this, we might have to turn a few over and I think that this needs to be the focus of any draft, rookie or otherwise.

For me i would like to see both Sam Frost and Andrew Boseley (doubt that both will be available) you would hope that one of these two could develop into a Key Position Back

As for our Ruckman, both Leuenberger and Hudson have been reasonable reliable when it comes to injury over the past couple of seasons. If one was to get injured we could play Longer out of the goal square sharing the ruck at maybe a 30/70 basis.

Also i think Ive seen Lisle in the ruck for Hawthorn a couple of time during their injury run of Ruckman. Not ideal for him to be playing there but think we have enough cover between those 4
