Really big match for Stosur against Petrova. With a h2h of 1-4 and having lost in straight sets in the 4 losses, this match up seems to be one of those for Sam that is not at all good for her. The last time they met in Eastbourne Petrova was playing very poorly and I think the last couple of months she has had a slight improval of form.
However I still think that Stosur can get up in this math and if she does she is a big shot for making the semi finals here.
I was following the scores at work for the first couple of sets of the Isner-Baggy match and seemed like it was very tight and maybe one of the better matches of the tournament so far.
Looking forward to Cilic-Tomic tonight. Think Tomic is a good shot as for whatever reason he seems to lift for bigger name players.

WTF how did Tomic lose so easily? Jarka getting smashed by Vania King, basically proves that she couldn't be in any worse form. Can't believe she even won a match.

At least Tomic didn't offer any excuses in the post-match interview.

Was a joy to watch Fed today.

Didn't watch the match and looking at the scoreline, glad I didn't...

I was looking forward to a Fed v Tomic match up, provided Tomic could reproduce his Wimbledon form. I gave him a very realistic chance of winning.

:( ...WTF happened?

I mean it's beyond a joke now.

Federer/Djokovic and Nadal/Murray for 12 of the last 13 Slams, if not more. Ridiculous. Yeah, so not rigged.
The dice have no memory.

If you had a statistically significant sample to work with then you may be able to draw some conclusions, but 13 matches with a 50-50 proposition is nowhere near substantial.

People only register the patterns that stand out. The top guys stand out because they are expected to meet each other later in the tournament and potentially go all the way, so people pay attention to who's in their half of the draw. If this scenario had happened with the 21st and the 32nd seeds frequently appearing on the same side of the draw then would people have noticed? What if we were talking about two top 100 journeymen who never make it past the first round? For all we know these scenarios may have happened far more frequently (and to a far greater extent) than this situation. Given how many players we're talking about, how many slams we're talking about, and the fact that it's only a 50-50 proposition which side of the draw they'll end up on then it wouldn't actually be that surprising.

I know statistics are difficult for some people to get their head around, but this really isn't remarkable at all. Just because it seems unusual compared to what has previously happened with the top couple of players doesn't mean that it is actually an aberration, farfetched, or difficult to explain.

Yeah nah.

Good to see after my earlier, premature post that Petko ended up winning the next 2 sets :thumbsu: Serves me right to call the result of a woman's game in the first set.

You serious brah? Federer's been playing some fairly awful tennis of late (by his standards). Dumping ball after ball either out or into the net.

Although he seemed to turn that around last night where he was back to his clinical best.

But I look at the way Tomic played Djokovic at Wimbledon, and think if he can bring that game to the court, he's every chance of knocking Federer off. No?

Tomic was DISGUSTING.

I like him, but that was awful, no excuses, total lack of effort, total lack of fight. He's young, and people will quickly forget the result, but there is never any excuse for gutless, half hearted efforts like that.

Unless he was ill, he deserves to cop it, 18 or not.

Well done to Cilic, he's playing really well.

Just me or has there been virtually nothing exciting through the first four days? I know it always happens early on, but this tournament has seen an incredible amount of completely lop-sided matches, more than usual. Was really looking forward to Venus/Lisicki, and then Venus withdrew. Fingers crossed Serena/Azarenka, sure to be the night session on Day 6, lives up to the hype.

Hopefully we get some good tennis tonight. Medina Garrigues vs Zvonareva, first on Ashe, totally uninspires me. I think Haase/Murray could be interesting, funny that that one's on Grandstand and not Ashe. Stosur is last on Grandstand, meaning probably roughly a 9:30am start

The women have had their usual run of upsets. I mean, of the top 20 seeds, Kvitova, Li, Bartoli, Radwanska, Cibulkova and Wickmayer are all gone before the 3rd round. That said, on the men's side I certainly agree with you.

Yeah the women's hasn't been uninteresting, moreso a mess, but that's nothing out of the ordinary. :p

BTW, Marin Cilic, you are a genuine talent, you were superb for two sets against Harrison, and superb for three against Tomic, you could be a great player if you put your mind to it. He’s inconsistent, from match to match and even within matches, and that’s the main thing holding him back. But he moves well, can hit beautiful winners off both wings, and can serve well. And to top it all off, from everything I’ve seen, I honestly don’t know if there would be a nicer player out there, a true gentle giant. He’s very easy to like, I just wish he put together more consistent results.

Here we go, day 5, more annoying Kevin Skinner commentary coming up. 5 seconds and I'm already tempted to press mute.

You may have spoken a day to soon. I agree with you that up until day 5, there has been not been many matches that have grabbed the attention. But the Murray Haase match was a interesting one. I only started watching it towards te end of the 4th set, Murray went up 4-0 in the 5th and then Haase made a comeback to level it at 4 all. Murray broke straight back and when serving for the match Haase had a bp but could not convert. A lot of emotion shown by Murray as well.

Sharapova out in 3 against Pennetta. Not completely surprising as it is a good match up for Pennetta and she has done well against Sharapova previously.

Donald Young defeated Wawrinka in 5 sets.

Stosur Petrova match about to start. Not a good match up for Sam, I predict a Petrova win here.

And Petrova breaks in the opening game. Stosur breaks straight back. Good game that was with a mix of power and good defense with the bh slice.

Stosur is playing very well at this point in time, hitting the ball cleanly and moving Petrova around the court. SHe is also serving very well. 4-1 up.

Sam was up 40-0 3 set points. She got tight and made some errors. Petrova has now lifted her game. Disappointing for Sam not to win the set in that previous game, could come back to haunt her. 5 all now.

Petrova is playing so well at the moment, great defense and Stosur really needs to lift again. She is playing well, but Petrova on fire.
