I hope this shuts all of you who have time and time again trashed Sam Stosur. Awesome performance.

I'm glad that she destroyed the talentless hack who survives only on HGH and steroids.

Do you read that tennis has a steroid blog? Basically thinks all tennis players are on steroids, Stosur is one of his main targets.

If anyone finds a torrent please feel free to post link. I will if I find one myself.

Just read what she apparently said
"If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way,"

Isn't Serena under probation from being banned after last time she threatened an umpire?

Roid rage is so unbecoming of her. She needs to stop surviving on HGH and steroids because when she does inevitably lose she loses her cool and the rage shines through.

No, I've never seen it. It wouldn't surprise me, however. At least Stosur has never had clear examples of roid rage. :)

Lol, I never thought of that. Funny thing was, Sam looks like a stick next to Serena and she pretty much hit her off the court this morning. I'd be celebrating very very hard tonight if I was her.

Stosur up to #7 in the rankings and #6 in the WTA Race.

Defending only 6 points over the next two Premier tournaments:

Tokyo (P5) - R32 (1 point)
Beijing (PM) - R64 (5 points)

A very good run and she could be #2 within a month.

And matt, I know you've been her biggest fan, I know you'd be loving this day. :thumbsu:

Yeah, I pretty much expressed feeling in my post earlier in the day. It's like your footy team winning the grand final obivously, makes all those crazy matches at crazy times worth it. Especially now the 2010 RG final won't hurt no way near as much.

I don't care what she does for the rest of the year, it truly doesn't matter. Time to celebrate this for a couple of weeks.

Player weights of some of the top 32 according to WTA. What do you think?

73kg - Svetlana Kuznetsova
72kg - Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
70kg - Julia Goerges, Petra Kvitova, Sabine Lisicki
69kg - Ana Ivanovic, Andrea Petkovic
68kg - Kim Clijsters, Yanina Wickmayer, Serena Williams

Why isn't the hindrance rule invoked whenever banshees like Sharapova strike the ball? The prolonged and obscenely loud grunts from her are at least as bad as what Serena did.

I think the difference is that what Serena did was not part of her shot. It wasn't a grunt as she hit the ball. She hit the ball, the ball was on its way over the net, then she yelled out. Can be debated whether it was deliberate, that word should be taken out of the rule.

PS: Not that I disagree re Sharapova. I absolutely refuse to watch her play.

I'm not so fussed about the "C'mon!", it's everything else that followed it that is BS. If the rules do state that it's point penalty, then Serena has no argument. She should have acted like an adult and asked for the tournament referee. If they confirm the rule, move on. It was all the other bullshit "You're a hater and you're unattractive inside." "We're in America last time I checked!" "Don't look at me!"

You can take the girl outta da hood, but you can't take da hood outta the girl.

Who says that?

I think she started off by just saying she was unattractive, and then realised it was Eva who isn't a bad sort really.

Stosur does have quite big biceps, just sayin'.

Just watched the replay having watched it live this morning. I have seen Sam play sets of tennis on a hard court like she has today, but not 2 consecutive sets. She could not have wished to have played any better than she did. I must also give cudos to Dave Taylor who came up with some fantastic tactics to beat Serena (ofcourse Sam had to deliver them, but I still want to give him some credit). Some information I think Taylor was able to give to Sam was to focus on Serena's fh side, watch her serve down the T on the ad court and step around on Serena's 2nd serve and attack it with Sam's fh and also hitting the return of serve flat and straight up the middle of the court.

That slice to Serena's fh where she has to produce her own power is a shot where you can worry her. She also turned Serena inside out a number of times and Serena was on the defensive for a high proportion of the match. Sam's variety was also so impressive. Flat backhands, low slices with a lot of underspin, high defensive bh slices with no pace, cross court forehands that landed around the service line that had a lot of loop on them and moved away from the court, the inside out fh (which she won the last 2 points of the match with). And of course the serve was just massive for Sam (as it has been all tournament). And she hit so bloody clean!

Sam was aggressive when she needed to be, defensive when called upon, kept level headed through the entire match and believed.

Matt you have made a couple of posts since the victory that have struck a cord with me. This is all about Sam Stosur today. She deserved the title, she has silenced her critics (how good is it getting over to TF and reading all the haters post away after reading their crap for the last couple of years), she is an advocate that hard work and determination can be rewarded with success. She has not rested on her laurels, she has always looked to improve her physical and mental game and it has paid off. Every interview I have heard or read from Sam this year she has continually stated that she was practising well, training hard and it just was not quite coming together in tournaments. But the last few weeks it started to come together.

I did not see her match against Arvidsson, but saw the match against Vanderweghe and Sam played pretty good in this match.

But for me the crucial match of the tournament was in the 3rd round against Petrova. Not the best match up for Sam and Nadia played extremely well in that match, as did Sam. It was high quality, intense tennis and Sam was down a break in the 3rd set and it was 3-1. It looked over at that point in time. Sam showed huge fight to win that match. She felt like she should be the winner and she got it done.

Then against Kirilenko where Sam started off like a house on fire but the match gradually became much more of a battle. It was once again a high quality match and after that tiebreak it takes an athlete with incredible resilience to comeback from that. I think she had 5 match points in that TB, but she came out in that 3rd set and pushed ahead.

1/4 final against Zvonereva was a very impressive match from Sam. Completely outplayed Vera who had no answers whatsoever. Sam was clinical, served very well and watching this match I got the feeling she could win the tournament (if Serena did not make the final).

Semi final against Kerber was probably her poorest performance I watched (not saying that Sam played badly, just not as good as the other matches I watched). She had all the pressure on her, but she played solidly and got the job done once again. I was so bloody nervous watching this match.

It was just Sam's tournament. Winning 3 matches that went the distance showing how much she has improved her mental performance.

To watch that return winner on match point was simply amazing. For all those regular tennis followers in Australia, I think this means something really special to all of us. Sam is so likeable and yes she did it for herself, but she also recognises how much this means to Australia. It is the first singles grand slam title I have seen an Australian woman win and I am ecstatic that Sam managed to do it. I've just got a huge smile sitting here writing this post.

Well done Sam Stosur.

Meh, it's good that channel 9 showed the final, allowed all Australians to witness a great sporting moment, it's the way it should work really, it's not bandwagony, it's business sense and channel 9 did a good thing. While, diehards like me can enjoy the extensive coverage on fox, win-win there.

Great post pepsi, all of it true. Great tactics were used, no question, staying aggresive on the return was the one thing that impressed me because she kept doing it and hitting the ball so cleanly. Serena missing a few too many first serves helped but Sam's contiunal style of aggresive play mixed with some slices really worked as good as you can hope.

And the mental strength as well might be the more incredible thing, I know I watched many matches where she gets in tight situations and really starts to rush her play, withe that would be time between points, groundies etc, main reason she could lose a lot of close matches. Had the situation where the crowd really got behind Serena, she broke back and then had a couple of break points to save, she managed to settle herself unbelievably well. As she stated in her press conference it was loudest crowd she had heard in your life. Just an extremely level head.

Seemed like it was destiny to win this tournament, just has that feeling about it.

Fantastic post pepsi!! :thumbsu:

Sam holding serve to make it 2-2 in the second set was massive, just huge. All the crowd going crazy for Serena, the momentum starting to swing, Serena lifting her level, and she held despite being down break points. Really switched back the momentum in her favour.

Is anyone going to get up tomorrow for the men's final, or are we all too tired after waking up very early this morning? Not sure I'll be able to make it up.

Heart attacks received in the Kirilenko and Petrova matches, as well as following scoreboards late at night for close to two years are absolutely worth it now. I tried to see Sam at AO last year but went in the day and she was on at night, hopefully I'm lucky enough this year.

I think between Cadel Evans and Stosur we can be very pleased with Aussie sports people this year, no bullshit antics or arrogance, just truly humble, gutsy people who slogged their guts out.

100% I'm up!!!

After having to work and miss Sammy's history making win, there is NO WAY I miss my favourite player in the final. NO WAY!!! I'm setting every alarm in the house! :D
