Is it a double standard that I don't mind when the men grunt upon hitting the ball but that I loathe it when I hear certain women do it? Those women seem to be far worse because it is a shriek that is many decibels louder than their male counterparts. It also appears to be far more forced.

There is definitely a difference between Sharapova, Azarenka and the men that have a verbal exertion. The girls are louder and longer, and use it as a tactic. They even do it for dropshots. Other women grunt but it's different. There is no need to shriek on every single shot of every single point.
