Seriously who cares about the Trinity vs Carey game? Both are average teams and will not contend for the flag.

If either knock off a good team maybe then take notice, but it's basically Port Adelaide playing West Coast.... Boring.

Tinnies, obviously there are a few that DO care about that game because we are talking about it. If you got a game to talk about then DO it instead of bagging others.

Also went to Bulleen and it was a good game. The wind was swirling so skills were a little down. I got there at 1/4 time. OT's looked great in 2nd. Number 7 for OT a gun. Carey looked good in second half. Suprised OT's didnt tag number 4. He basically controlled the wing and half forward in the second half and turned the game. Big crowd. They were pumped in last 5 minutes.

Just guessing but I think there are a few Panthers fans on Bigfooty so look forward to many more Panther related posts Tiny.
Go C's!!!!

Dropped into Melbourne Uni on the Saturday expecting to see a good quality game and lucky for me i got there to see the end of the two's game!!!

De La gave the boys from Uni a football lesson, Uni looked slow and were playing with a game plan that is as old as their rooms. Full credit to De La ran the ball with ease from HB to HF (new coach same game plan) where Pickett and Eddy were feasting on opportunities. Uni took till midway through the second to even score.

De La once again have unearthed a number of good young players with bigger bodies that fitted right in.

Comments on Uni
- Gave away stupid free kicks all day
- Went the man not the ball on a number of occasions and cost them multiple 25's
- Watts is wasted playing deep in attack
- Fergus needs to control his aggression, on a number of occasions he got hot under the collar towards Uni players as they were coming off the ground and gave them an almighty spray from the coaches box
- Looked very Slow

Full credit to De La should have won by 20 goals but a win under the spires is worth two and to get the road trip out of the way early is a good thing.

Uni = Big worries

I also went out to Bulleen to have a little look after all the OC pre season hype and I must say I was a little disappointed!

I am not associated with either side but I thought OC looked a bit heavy and a bit slow, they reminded me of OI from 2-3 years ago! They will be good in the heavier conditions but won’t be able to get close to the likes of Xav’s and De La in terms of run and pace.

Trinity looked ok, they had a ripper 2nd Q but obviously slowed down after that. It looked like their average age was about 21, they looked like a bunch of kids having a crack which was good. If they can get some experience (Rambo) up forward they won’t give up to many easy games!

Dropped into the xavs game, boy are they an amazing club.

OM's got off to a pretty good start kicking with the wind (3 goal advantage). Simon Taylor was looking ominous. He is a big boy and the Xavs struggled to contain his strength. Kicked one early and had another shot shortly after and missed. It was a worry and he looked like he would be the difference between the 2 sides for the game. Early in the 2nd term Xavs youngster and full back Will Smith went down clutching his shoulder. Over heard him say it popped out and that it always happens first game of the year, and that he should be ok for next week, or the week after. Interesting. What was even more interesting was the way in which Taylor went up for center bounce hit outs. He didn't even jump for the contest or go near it. He allowed the Xavs to win the tap outs almost in a hope that he would shark the tap. Unless he has a concern over a knee, it was quite bizarre.

As the game went on, the Xavs just kept on doing everything right. Goss whilst it seemed dominated, just got the job done. Kicked 6, but it was of those games where he wasn't the true stand out. It seems the way with the Xavs. They are just a well drilled unit, with no stand out performers. D Lynch would have to be the most under-rated player in the whole competition. He gets the job done week in week out at either end of the ground.

What is even more scary is that the following were unavailable for selection either through injury or other. Handley, Dimattina, Mercury, Aguis (who played in the 2's), Larkins, Hunter, Shaw where the obvious ones missing. There could have been more.

Unless DLS have improved some 15-20% i don't see how anyone will take the flag this year.

I was also at the match Schmurf, and take a bit of a different view. I was up in the stand so had a good show of the match and how it unfolded.

First of all I'll say I thought Simon Taylor, apart from the first 5 minutes, did not have much influence on the contest at all. He looked slow, and as you said, did not contest as hard as he should have. I thought OM's looked good, and certainly jumped Xavs heading into the wind, and will get better through out the season. The talent is there.

I thought the second quarter was when Xavs put the foot down and it came together. They are certainly a good club... Very 2004-5ish about the team.

Will disagree with a couple of things you said there. One about D Lynch... I don't think he is underrated at all, rather a very much respected player from the VAFA and VFL and I think any other teams would consider him as one of our best players. He played a blinder on Saturday, but there would be no other team in the VAFA that would underrate him.

The other would be regarding Goss... For a 19 year old, I thought he was in the best 3 players of the ground. He worked extremely hard and his pressure was fantastic. When Mercuri returns, it will be a very hard forward line to get the ball out of.

Xavs, similar to Collingwood, are in second gear at the moment, and are only going to reach greater heights, however I think DLS will be the real test.

Writers,
I ventured up to the cappuccino drinks home ground on the saturday to watch the first half of OS vs Coll.
I was quite pleased with the level of the game even with the huge hindrance of the gusts blowing through. This game was fought out with passion and intensity, which showed that both these teams will be alright this year.
I felt that Collegians smashed scotch at the stoppages and cleared the ball far too easily, but scotch's defence were fantastic along with what looked to be hawthorns rolling press.
OS stalwart S.Thompson had the match up on the much hyped and much hated Nick Saunter and had the better of him from what i saw. And i believe he kicked 0.1 for the day?
Collegians have some younger players (finally) stepping up in attack and in the midfield and look to be a competitor again this year.
Scotch, with a very young side in from what i could see (could only recognise a few players that would have been over the age of 24) were solid and worked well as a team. Collegians went into half time the better side.

Unfortunately i did not see the second half of the game but i spoke to a friend that watched the match and he said that it was close up until about the 5th minute mark of the last when collegians kicked 7 unanswered goals to kill the game with the wind. He said that they looked unstoppable and maybe that was due to the scotchies not showing too much of a whimper.

I would like to see that scotch side show some heart, especially when you see some of the younger guys getting pushed around hardly any retaliation from the elder/larger players.

Collegians look a real shot this year and i would suggest would be in the competitors with DLS to knock off Xavs.

Alrighty then...... 5/5 here. :)

Early picks for round two:

Xavs to put OT to the sword
College Boys by a few over Blues
Bloods to struggle against Scotchies
SBMT big winners over OMs going on Saturday's result
Panthers to find out how big the step is up to Premier A against DLS

Hope I'm wrong with the last one! ;)

I'll take the above wiith the exception of OH to win at home. I was also 5/5 last week!
Some good match reports today. Great reads. Seems Xavs and DLS are the early frontrunners, with Uni being the biggest disappointment IMO.

Jack Watts would of been close to best on for de la gifted them a few down feild free kicks/goals, some may of been soft but were there.

Was great to see Damien Hale back out there hes one of the best young talents in the comp and Charles Shaw of blues hes another talented player who in my eyes spent to much time in the 19s and twos last year.

Some exciting young talent across the board Goss with 6, Humphrey and Clinch both playing extremely well for dls, Hunt for Trinity is another gem as is Jack Bull for Collegians. Looks like the comp is going to be extremely tight this year!

Those familiar with U19s football in recent years would be unsurprised by De La’s production line of young talent. They have dominated the unders for years. No ex-AFL or marque players in their team, just an even spread of talent developed mainly from within. They rolled out a couple more in rd 1 with 18 yo Tom Humphrey a standout. Ed Clinch also made an exceptional debut with a few other youngsters from recent U19 teams very prominent (Collins, Hale, Muller etc). St Bedes also played at least four 18 year olds in their seniors on Saturday (Garside x 2, Jeanes & Barnhoorn) All local boys who came through the school or juniors. Brendan Goss from OX was the best young forward in the 19s last year who seamlessly made the transition to senior football. If it’s good enough for Xavs to develop their own why do some clubs still persist in chasing one-year short-term wonders from the suburbs?

Xavs can develop their own because thanks to the vatican's views on contraception they have access to around 10 times the number of u19's to develop than the rest of us!

It’s actually De La with 5 under 19 Premier flags since 2004 but I guess on your reckoning they have same advantage. For all your ranting and raving you might be on to something here. You have to go back to 2002 for a non-Catholic premiership in that grade and since 1994 only Hailebury and Uni Blues in A section.

I sw the first Half of the Carey OT's game and OT's were smashing them!! Dont know what happened after I left??

Stopped past Toorak park and arrived as the second half was starting!!

I think people need to not jump all over the OM's just yet - chatting with clearly an OLD XAV supporter he expalined to me that the first half was actually quite a good contest. In the third quarter XAVS had the wind (prob 7 Goals) and used it well. Unfortunately for the OM's it looked they had lost the run in their legs by the end of the third.... XAVS are a great side we all know that! OM's went down by 8 goals but I think (please confirm) they had a a dozen or so new players and it was always going to be a big ask... I think there will be a few sides that loose to them by about this margin at Toorak park throughout the year!

Whistle blower

VAFA website shows Grant Wardrop is keeping up his Tuesday night Tribunal appearances again in 2011. Must be on an incentive scheme as he was the clear winner for giving eveidence in 2010

..be careful...be very very careful when GW hits the turf!!

Barnhoorn played 19s for St Bedes coming back from a shoulder injury. Won't see much action in the seniors until he gets fit again. The other youngster was Darcy Holden, played a few games last year. Good shot for goal and could make an impact this year.

Well, rooster not all clubs have the luxury of football factory for a school ala de la, xavs and st bedes( mind you xavs have chased their fair share of one year wonders over the years!). So if you are at a club that doesn't have that lluxury, that model you are so found of is simply not achievable.

Probably so, but got confirmed that the Xavs had a total of 7 premiership players missing:
Handley
Rogerson
Larkins
DiMattina
Mercuri
Shaw
Agius

and also Cam Hunter (tonsillitis).

Result could have been much, much worse.

Yes totally agree Rocky. But it still takes a mountain of work to create the right environment so that kids want to play for the club. There is an endless line of suburban clubs happy to throw ridiculous $$ at unproven kids and they will continue to put the cleaners though us and other ammo clubs year after year. De La Salle is a minnow in comparison to many other schools in both size and resources. Some much bigger and better funded schools have teams in far lower grades than us so the fact you have a feeder school does not always equate to a strong old boys team. We acknowledge that we are fortunate that in recent years many (but not all) of the football playing school leavers want to play for us but this is does not just happen automatically. We also know that this won’t last forever. What goes up inevitably at some stage goes down.

this may be true - am told the OM's also had around 6 out from their starting 18.

all I am saying is it's round 1

True its only round 1, but that list of Xavs missing players would be like chalk and cheese to the missing 6 of OM's, They are 7 serious names.

can anyone name the missing OM Players?!

I saw them play a few games last yr and there were some players (good ones) that werent playing on the weekend....

they may have moved on?!

anyway from what I saw I reckon OM's will be ok and win more than they lose.

Old Carey were a huge dissapointment for mine... I am a neutral (with a soft spot) for the boys from Bulleen and they were lucky to get a win on the weekend...

maybe another example of a side with lots of new players that need time to gel.
