KFC trivia question this arvo - who was the 1st batsman dismissed in the 1st Bellerive Oval Test ?
Slater chips in "We'll it must've been an opener"

Thank you Captain Obvious

Although knowing Bellerive it wouldn't surprise if play was delayed long enough to make sending a nightwatchman in as opener a viable option.

Had been away for the last couple of tests. Got back yesterday and tuned in and watched some cricket on the tele.

Lasted about 15 minutes, those pricks are unbearable.. The " Michael slater crescendo" is really starting to piss me off and with so many 9 executives dicks in his mouth I'm surprised he can get words out.

And healy. Wow. I just listen to him now to hear his butchering of the English language. Actually can't speak.

anyone else enjoying Brett Geeves on the radio?
I've heard a few times and always enjoyed him. ABC commentary teams needs to find a Roebuck style replacement, his gravitas is missing IMO. It still beats the shit out of the television commentary though, I went out and bought a digital radio that can be paused so I don't have to put up with the overwhelming shitness of channel 9's commentators. Worth every single penny.

This thread is so relevant. I agree with just about everything.

Is it just me, or is the commentary too bias? I am a neutral so I'd like to know what passionate supporters of either sides think. Seems like they are overly critical of the opposition and too positive towards Australia. And when the opposition is on top they are obviously trying to hide their disappointing. Does it bother anyone else?

You'd think someone like Gideon Haigh would be a good option. Seems a good speaker on all the podcasts I've heard, although it might be different on live radio.

Well it would have been possible for one of the openers to retire hurt and the no 3 to be the first dismissed I guess.

Healy and Slater in particular cheerlead a bit, and we're certainly missing Griegy for him giving to the Aussies a bit but if you think they are bad, just watch the India v England game :o

The Channel Nine team is still shocking.

Slats and Healy are alright in their expert opinions and what they say but they just ramble on and are shocking to listen to. They're both too excitable with what they are saying and they ramble on and on and on.

In contrast, Lawry and Chapelli are actually okay commentators but they have absolutely no idea what they're saying. They're both out of date. If Chappelli mentions another time that a bowler has to be "cricket fit" as opposed to "fitness fit" or "fit to run a marathon" then he should just retire. I suppose he doesn't want pitches to be covered up any more and dislikes of the notion of bowling overarm.

Tubs has the best expert opinion but he's too passive in the way he commentates for my liking.

Nicholas is actually a decent commentator but he's more of a host than anything else. His accent gets annoying as well.

Richie. Is a legend.

I'm going to reserve judgement on Glenn McGrath until I've listened to him more.

Tbh the best commentator I've listened to is Adam Gilchrist. Shame he's not around anymore.

I know that he is a bit different, but did anyone hear Ian Healy the other day randomly bemoaning the slight variations that happen to occur in Sri Lankan player names? E.g. "Shaminda" instead of "Chaminda", "Chanaka" instead of "Chandana" etc.? Mark Nicholas reminded Healy that the same variations occur with "Australian" names, e.g. that we have "Michael", "Mike" and "Mitchell". Just another Healy WTF moment.

Yes, I heard this, and it did sound a bit racist. Don't comment on something unless you understand it fairly well, and I'm sure Heals doesn't really understand Sri Lankan naming customs.

All I heard in my head during that piece of play was Richie's team meeting to work on the pronunciation of the Pakistan players names. 'Today we are going to Get! It! Right!'.

Healy is a numpty but the Sri Lankans have a reputation for changing their names.

Sure we have Michael Hussey and Mitchell Starc, but is it Muralitharan or Muralidaran? Jayawardene or Jayawardena? Surely it isn't that hard to agree on your own name?

Would say it's more ignorance than racism. Thought they went pretty close to the PC line with the "he wouldn't be going round to his place for a curry anytime soon" with respect to the P. Jayawardene and Maharoof run out when SL last toured as well.

The thing that annoys me is the negativity from Chappell (mostly him) about opposition sides. The way he crapped on about South Africa's tactics when they were here you'd never have believed that South Africa actually won the series 1-0. Nicholas was really the only one to aknowledge Dilshan's innings and they all were getting stuck into Mathews and Dilshan throughout their match reviving partnership about how poorly they were batting .

Yes I heard it and was wondering where he was going with it, waiting for a punchline or a try hard Billy Birmingham moment...but it got worse...surprised he didn't mention Matthews for Murali....awful.

I think they have to drop this notion that you must be an ex player to be a commentator.
not every ex player is a moron but nine seem to have picked the lot of them, tom moody was great when he got the opportunity for the perth test, but i noticed glen mcgrath is back in the com box the the Hobart test, another brain dead moron ex cricketer from NSW who doean't have any knowledge out side of his own state

yes, agree.

cowan for example has an exquisite range of words and phrases that extend beyond "the boys were good" and "keeping to our game plans"

there just doesnt seem to be anyone from that era of cricket who can eloquently describe a cricket match quite like a maxwell, roebuck, benaud et al used to and still do

I agree they are too negative and one sided. But I actually like Chapell and his cricketing knowledge. I don't think Ritchie has ever been negative or bias and he is the most loved ever.
When Healy first started I thought he was decent because he gave good technical info but now he's become too comfortable and a ball by by ball commentator rather than expert. Some should just not be ball by ball.

i hope that in professional full time sports commentary, persons in employ would be trained in pronouncing names. its just common courtesy. or if player H changed pronunciation from "aych" to "haytch" then everyone be informed and educated.
