The more I think about it the more I want to trade Lake. We arent going to win a premiership with him.

If we could trade him to GWS for one of the Mini draft picks I would definitely consider it.

We could have an incredibly good team, okay lets just say we trade Lake for mini draft pick 2 and get Hogan, then take Garlett and Toumpas in the Draft.

Wood Talia Pearce
Vez Williams Howard
Garlett Smith Wallis
Tutt Jones Higgins
Cordy Hogan Dahlhaus

Roughead Libba Toumpas

Thats an extremely good base to work from, and its also fast and strong.

It fits Maccas total football gameplan perfectly, everyone can play everywhere, all those mids can rotate through forward line and backline and the small forwards can rotate through backline and midfield and even most of the backs can rotate through mid and forward line too.

It has a LOT of goal kicking power, a lot of rebounding ability, inside game is perfect and outside game is fine too.

Thats not even counting in players such as Murphy or Griffen.

GWS will be losing 2 or 3 of their vets at the end of this season, leaving only Cornes to play one more season, so GWS might be keen to trade one of their 17 yos for a 30 year old player, and we have a few options there - it might be worth considering.

I know it wont happen but Lake would be perfect for them and as much as I love him it would be a win win situation for sure!

I don't think a lot of clubs will base the first round on 'needs' but mostly on the best available. I'd like to hope that we don't use all our picks on getting outside players who are best at spreading, breaking lines and hitting targets like you say.

Not all, just the first two. But whats the alternative? Take another inside mid and a key position player because they are best available and then hope DJ and Sherman somehow become elite mids, or that a couple of elite outside mids from other clubs desperately want to come to the dogs?

surely if our list is deficient, we must take concrete steps to address it?

This is the dilemma that all clubs have faced for 25 years now - not sure if anyone has got the forumula right.

It's very tough to let the very best of the best go - in some drafts - there's often a stand out - the one everyone will take if they had the first draft pick.

In other drafts, the top 5 can be roughly the same - and in those cases, you are spot on - the club must look to address their deficiencies, present or emerging.

Works well in theory but when you don't have the guidance of senior players for the younger ones we'd be struggling on the bottom for a couple of more years, it's what Melbourne did and really hinders the development of younger players. We really need those players who work really hard and have dedication to stick around and provide an example of how hard you really need to work to be successful. I hope we keep the likes of Boyd, Cross, Gia and Murph around for 2-3 more years to be those guys (if they hold up). That being said I would take a 30 year old Lake for a 17 year old mini-draft pick any day.

We're likely to be pretty average next year because we're bottoming out. But hey, another Boyd in Tom wouldn't look bad at all in the red, white and blue. ;)

hyperthetical : How much better does Wines/Viney have to be to justify their selection over Toumpas/Mayes/Garlett?

Adding a dead set gun elite inside mid to our list is going to make a difference, but at some point you must be reaching reaching diminishing returns with adding more of the same?

A lot, but they arent that much better. I'd say Toumpas definitely and maybe Mayes and Garlett are better than Wines anyway. The only player in the draft, needs or no needs, I would take over Toumpas would be Whitfield tbh.

EDIT: Forgot about Daniher, I'd take him over Toumpas too. Gun!

The first thing is until draft camp is finished the numbers/favourites will change - so this is wild speculation but fun.

Based on the U18 champs and If Melb finishes below us then my guess would be:

GCG: Whitfield
GWS: Toumpas (bugger it but he is fantastic)
Melb: Stringer
Melb: Grundy
WB: Mayes
WB: Garlett

Next will be Wines and Kennedy - Wines is a gun and is very much in the Macca mould and is skillful (Sam Mitchell Jimmy Bartel Type). I know he has inside strength but woyld you think a Bartell would be valuable to us? Kennedy is a quick small forward /mid with a great kick. Either of these would be good also. Or could be picked before us - which may push Stringer or Toumpas to us. Either slipping would be great.

In the mini-draft - we should do as much as we can to get Hogan, Boyd or Billings- best small in U18s).

We still need a FF and while I like Plowman I think our Defence has got the most potential outside our inside mids and rucks. I doubt Mason Shaw will make it to our next pick. Paparone and Jaeksch (?spelling) are OK. So one option is to take Shaw high - I think this would be overs but we would get a possible top 10 KPF. Not a problem if we get Hogan or Boyd in the mini.

Billings isn't eligible in the mini draft. Sorry to just pick that out, just saying :p

I have no doubt at all that Melbourne will be forced to use their first round pick on Viney. Grundy is a ruck - do they need a ruck in the draft or will they trade for a top up? Griffin (Freo) is out of contract, and Mitch Clark is a pinch hit in the ruck - so I am not convinced that is who they will go for.

Emma Quayle was on 774 yesterday talking about the draft, she said Whitfield is just in a class of his own, can play defence, forward and midfield - think Adam Goodes or Hodge - what would GC take for him do you think?

Damn. Is he too young? Great little player.
His birthday is in August, so a couple of months too young. Have to be born between January and April to be eligible for the mini draft.

Lake or Griffen.

Lake or Griffen.
Lake - love him, but when you are rebuilding what is the point of having a AA fullback in your squad?

Hawthorn traded in their players for draft picks and produced a superteam, time the doggies got tough. I know we really value our stars, maybe a little too much, as we seem to let them play on a year longer than they should (think Westy, Johno etc). Maybe trading Lake is a consideration - (I am having second thoughts as I type this mind you:oops:)

I kinda want Minson to be traded at the end of the year, don't know why but as some have said, he won't be in our next run for a cup, so we could get a solid pick and 17year old player depending on how we make the deal, since we have Campbell that can play Minno spot.

thoughts?

WE'd all miss that mad dog look in his eyes!

That mad dog look disguises the absolute vacancy in his head.

Sometimes watching Lake play reminds me of that episode of the simpsons where they are talking about ballet and the camera cuts to an in-shot of Homer's brain imagining a bear driving around in a tiny car.

Seriously think Lake's mental capacity goes missing several times throughout a quarter of footy.

I agree as long as we can get something decent for him which I'm not too sure about.
