I'd personally love getting Garlett and Mayes.

Two players with x-factor to their games.

There needs to be more Menzel love, how often do you see someone dominate the champs like did in his two games?

The championships only play a small part as to where someone gets recruited, you judge on the talent and development they have shown over a period of time and their attributes not on a couple of good games, he is a mid first round pick, better players available at our pick.

He also had the lars surgery, at his young age, I would be a bit suspect about it holding up.

With (hopefully) a clean out expected, could we take a mature aged player or two for a bit of extra depth or to fulfill a hole?

I wish there was someone like Ahmed Saad running around in the VFL. I was pretty frustrated we didn't make a play for him (we have done probably one innovative trade since Rawlings). I'd love to find a mature, slippery crumbing small forward who can play straight away.

Anyone in the VFL who could be our next Dickson / Saad?

Every player has a concern except maybe Whitfield. Toumpas seems to be everyones favourite but did anyone notice that he barely hit the scoreboard? A midfielder only becomes truly elite when they are also goalkickers. Mayes didn't quite play to his lofty expectations. Stringer has the broken leg. Garlett has his off field dramas. Grundy isn't the type we need. Wines isn't the type we need. etc...

With the lars, you're right but people seem to think Stringer will get back to his best after injury. Menzel actually has got back to his best. If the doctors think its fine, you would have to consider him. At 186cm, kicks goals at will, great hands, agile and super smart, he can play anywhere which is exactly what JMac is looking for. Will be interesting how he performs the rest of the year with Centrals. Same for the other guys on our watch list.

He's played more than a couple good games. They don't just give out AIS Academy scholarships.
At this age, its not about consistent development over a period of time, if a player produces a standout "look at me" game or two in big games, they bolt up the rankings.
Obviously, theres still the rest of the season to judge all these prospects.

Melbourne could actually end up ahead of us on the ladder if they beat Port this week meaning we could end up with picks 3 & 4. Although i do think we are a good chance of beating Carlton this week us finishing 16th is not out of the question as we have a pretty tough run home from here!

FWIW, I think Melbourne will win this week, and will end up with 5 wins. I have Melb, Port and us level on 5 wins at the year's end.

It then becomes a matter of percentage. Port have a better percentage than both teams, and still have a match against GWS to come, so I expect there percentage to be the best.

There is a points differential of 234 between Melbourne and us at the moment. Would that be eroded over the rest of the year - remembering Melbourne have matches against GWS and the Gold Coast to come? If they beat GWS by 40, and we lose another by 60, then that is 100 points of the difference eroded, etc.

Only will come into play if Melbourne beat Port this week though.

I did the ladder and felt that there is a strong chance Melbourne could finish above us. I think with so many young players, they are not as desperate as us for the draft, but would prefer to show their supporters that they are improving - just my opinion anyway.

I would not be against trading our 1st rnd compo pick for Jack Martin..?
He looks like he could be an A grader... It would still allow us to have out first round pick (5?) we could pick up Mayes/toumpa/Garlet with that.. Then suddenly in 2 years we have a pretty exciting young midfeild brigade...

I would love that, too, but it might not be enough!

I worry about the reaction from many fans if the two kids we draft early don't have an immediate impact next year. Having seen the likes of Cordy, Grant and Williams take a couple of years at least before even cracking a game, I think there will be plenty of Bulldogs supporters ready to write off whoever we take as a failed draft pick if they don't walk straight into the team and start playing well early.

odds are someone we draft next year will make an immediate impact having so many high picks. people will whinge and complain too much anyway, especially if another kid looks better next year from a lower pick.

i have noticed over the last 10 years, drafting is getting better and more accurate and yeah, as a consequence everyone now just expects more.

Midfielders, which is who we are after for our first two picks, develop much more quickly than KPP. I would imagine we would go for a kid who is big, strong and ready to play senior football, and maybe a kid that will play in the magoos for a year with a couple of cameos in the seniors.

Garlett and Stringer fit that pretty well.. With Stringer ready to play thanks to his 92kg frame, whilst garlett might take a few months to be ready for senior footy.

According to TAC Cup Future Stars Mock Draft (Terry Wallace & Ben Dickson)
Pick 5 - Jimmy Toumpas
Pick 6 - Sam Mayer

Yes please. Just thinking about the draft and going over a bit of footage, Mayes has all the attributes to be developed into that Luke Hodge/Brendan Goodard quarter back type, just food for thought

Cheers. Wow @ O'Rourke at number 2. Good prospect, but not that good I wouldn't have thought.
