Seriously, how did we only get tier 2 compensation? Blows so hard. We would be set if we had another pick in the middle of the first round.
Considering the fact that Scully is yet to show anything other than potential while Ward is a proven finals performer already, you'd think that he'd get a better offer and get higher compensation.

That's exactly how I feel - we have been screwed over big time with the compensation and it's not only the disparity with what Melbourne got for Scully it's also the fact that Adelaide got exactly the same compensation for losing Davis.

Ward is clearly the better player out of the 3 right now (even with Scully on the park) and there's nothing to suggest that he won't continue to remain ahead of the other 2 for the rest of his career.

How the F@@K can Davis be compared to Ward let alone be on a par with him.
Ward also had immeasurable marketing value to our club - local boy, good looking, future captain - and all that has been lost for the same compensation as what Adelaide got for a player that might play 50/100 games.

You're underselling Davis there. He's a young KPD which looks the goods. Arguably worth more than Ward in terms of structure.

He's also had 2 shoulder reco's as well. Sadly potential outways reality in the AFL, as Ward has achieved far more than Davis and Scully in their respective short careers, and should recieve the compensatory equivalent of what the Demons got for Scully.

As for the dogs in the next draft - if they have 2 top ten picks, then they should pick the best available players, which will invariably be midfielders at that stage of the draft. I'd give almost anything to go back in time and give Sherman back to the Lions, so we keep the Harbrow compensation pick. Four of the top 25 picks would have been absolute gold.

So had Judd before he got drafted.
Correct - which is why he went number 3 instead of number 1. Judd was drafted as an 18 year old, while Davis has been given a contract of over $500,000 per year based on 20 games and 3 injury interrupted seasons. A lot of money for a bloke who's shoulder could pop out at any time.

how about we trade our two 1st round picks to callan ward back??? sorry i reckon that joke won't go so well..

Statistically we should nail one of them...and hopefully Mr. Hunter drops, however, i saw him the other weekend and he goes well... will this be the first year someone nominates and gets a father/son with the team that nominated

Assuming we finish around 13th-10th, any two of the following: (from knightmare writeups), followed by Hunter in the second round.

Vlastuin (big physical midfielder, but with class disposal and kicking)
Toumpas (electric, goal-kicking midget with class disposal and kicking)
Mason Shaw (198cm KPF marking machine, good kick, who lifts for big games)

In other words, midfielders who can use the ball under presure, and a forward who can be a long target and kick stright.

I think we need classy mids more than anything else, and would be happy to get three with our first three picks (that includes Hunter). Classy mids will give the young forwards we do have a decent chance.

However, if there is a deadset gun key forward who can take big grabs as a long target still available, will take that as well.

With round three picks onwards, we simply take best available regardless.

What if we happen to finish 16th.

An early guess is that Lachie Whitfield will go to GWS at 1, and Jake Stringer will go to Gold Coast at 2...

So what type of players would we take with picks 3 and 4?

Almost guaranteed that there will be an abundance of gun mids as well as the best KPF available, so who would we go for?

I don't think we will finish last so I think Lachie whitfield is out of the picture. I don't think Jake Stringer is a guaranteed number 2 at the moment, even though his potential is probably even higher than Whitfield. I reckon we could probably finish low enough to potentially pick Stringer up. Would absolutely love to be able to get the combo of Stringer and Shaw with our first 2 picks.

I had a funny thought the other day. Have the AFL inadvertently given us a higher draft pick. I mean if we don't play expansion teams twice surely that means we finish lower on the ladder when compared to sides who do.

Thanks AFL the Fixture this year will help us no end.

Having GWS and GC twice gives you more control over finishing lower though as it will be 8 point ball game each time we play GWS and GC, drops the matches against them deliberately and we pretty much ensure we have picks 1 and 2. AFL by not giving them to removed our control.

ADelaide plays them twice I think - does Melbourne?

Doesn't the requirement to activate compo picks prior to the start of the season encourage tanking?
It absolutely does. It's a ridiculous concept. Whats the incentive for the Dogs or Demons to fight out the last few rounds and try and rise from 14th to 9th? Lot of Dogs and Demon players with niggling injuries will be put on ice in the last 1/3 of the season. No point risking injury and actually winning games of footy when it's in your best interests not to.

Interesting in the NBA that there is a lot of discussion on tanking, with the Golden State Warriors clearly not having any interest in winning games so that they can retain their 1st round draft pick, as it's protected if the pick is number 7 or below. This says to me that the lottery works as a concept, as this is the first time i can remember discussions on tanking in the NBA since the Knicks tanked to get Patrick Ewing.
