I think he has a lot of speed but you won't know how fast he is until the combine anyway. Wines is a top 10 pick easily. If we are going to get Toumpas then there's no reason why we shouldn't consider Wines among the other players who are likely to go in the top 10. Just because he has an inside game doesn't mean he should be disregarded.

For what it's worth and what I have seen of Wines, I think you're underestimating his pace.

Inside game is a bonus, but we specifcally want guys who are the best at spreading, breaking lines and hitting targets by foot. Is he of of the best at doing that? If so, no probs - if not, take the guys who are, because we dont lack for inside contested ball at all.

I don't think a lot of clubs will base the first round on 'needs' but mostly on the best available. I'd like to hope that we don't use all our picks on getting outside players who are best at spreading, breaking lines and hitting targets like you say.

Wouldnt be surprised to se the AFL award GC a priority pick, and maybe even GWS to throw another spanner in the works.

The rules are now such that there is a very wide discretion allowed to the AFL in determining priority picks.

And as much as I hate to admit it - there is no greater need currently than the Giants and Suns (especially if viewed from an AFL perspective).

First pick (3-7): Toumpas
Second pick(3-7): Stringer
Third pick: Tanner Smith (unlikely but hopeful)
Fourth pick: Jake Neade
Fith pick: Hunter

I agree. I had expected GCS to be more competitive this year. However I would hope that any discretionary cot-case pick awarded to GCS would be at the end of the first round, not before it. (That would really stink.)

Yep, also one of the reasons I dont want us to recruit players with homesickness issues with our early picks like Garlett, Rioli's etc. Whilst we did well with Cooney my faith has wavered after Schofield, Harbrow, Thorne leaving for homesickness reasons.

Look clearly we must recruit on a quality/needs basis. The club since Mac's arrival has repeatedly rattled on about "quality people", and suggested they will perform due diligence assessing candidates on their personalities [ hopefully including risk of homesickness etc.].

That being said, from my memory we have had a lot more success with interstate kids when recruiting from SA rather than elsewhere. Look at how many Sth. Aussies there are on our list, and how little problem we have suffered with 'go home syndrome' from among their numbers, compared perhaps with WA, and NT etc. Kids from SA picked up in the upcoming draft would have plenty of fellow excrow-eaters as potential mates and role models in our team.
I was seriously impressed with what I have seen of Toumpas, and would love to see the two former SA under-age captains in our line up together in him and Griff. And if we manage to snare Toupas, Griff would be a great mentor /role model for him.

While I am not suggesting we recruit on a state of origin basis, history suggests that SA seems to work well for us. And, Toumpas aside, there were a number of other kids in the SA TAC Cup side that both fit our needs, and look to have heaps of talent. Couple them with a few of the home grown guns, and maybe this draft could start heading us back in the right direction.

Yeh - I hope so too - I think you're right that there would be an almighty stink form the likes of Melbourne, Port and us if even more high picks get shuffled across to the new teams, but it's hard to predict what they will do.

I would be done with the AFL if they gave GC a pick because in their SECOND YEAR playing 18 year olds they lost every game, WHAT THE **** DID THEY THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?

It's a good point - they were given everything - and are on the verge of pissing it all up against the wall - should not be rewarded for that.

I
Well, here's our boy, Toumpas:

lining up for some pre-season surgery - might scare one or two clubs off?

Isn't that the Eagles trick? Spread rumours about players, than grab them 2nd and 3rd round?
I don't think any one understands how keen I am for this kid!

Please slip to us!

We really need to play it safe this year. We're suffering now because of a dearth of players in the 23-27 age bracket (or at least good ones). Clayton's high risk/little reward policy got us nowhere and is currently sinking Gold Coast.

We're overstocked for ruckmen so no early picks to be used on them. We have a heap of key position players (of varying quality) so unless we're sure one is a near-certainty for a long career we needn't bother. We have Wallis, Libba and Smith as developing in and under players with another Wallis, who i assume is in the same mould, to come. We need midfielders (with good attitudes) who can kick and smart forwards.

We should also keep an eye on the mini-draft. There are two more players to go. I have no idea how big an issue Garlett's off-field stuff is but he and Toumpas I believe are eligible to be taken in this draft. If we rate them higher than our early picks, then consider trading one of them to GWS to lock them in. If they aren't quite, then consider bundling our early second rounder and the Reid compo pick (or, if Minson's off, see if we can work him into it).

I take your point, although it's pretty hard to play it safe - every pick is a gamble at the end of the day - it's a matter of who has the best info to put the odds in our favour?

True, but Everitt and Grant, for example, were relatively risky picks. Both were light bodied and didn't have a clear position at AFL level (Grant played as a FF but is more of a tall flanker, Everitt...well who knows) but had great athletic attributes which raised them in Clayton's estimation.

Smith, on the other hand, was relatively low risk. He was seen as having been taken early by some and lacked the perceived upside of other players but was strong bodied, reasonably quick and had footy smarts. Given the draft is no longer considered 'super' and talent may start to run out past the first 20-30, I'd rather lock in players who are likely to at least become reliable members of the 22 than taking a skinny kid who can kick goals out of his backside but may have a questionable work ethic and no obvious position.

Mini-draft picks are for 16 year olds, Toumpas and Garlett go in the normal draft.

If we wanted a mini draft pick we would go for Hogan who will be a gun key forward or Martin who might be a bit risky to take for a Vic club but will be a gun.

Toumpas is the safe pick for us, he will be a good player. While Garlett would be pretty high risk/very high reward type. I think they would compliment each other well to take together.

This is Garlett last year as a 16 year old

I'd say he could play round one next year as a goal sneak and snag a few a game before moving into the midfield.

We'll get nothing for Minson if he leaves uncontracted, end of first round concession if that. It would be such a disgrace if we get bent over by the AFL yet again. Best hope if Minson wants to leave is that we bundle a deal with GWS for him, he is having a great year and as a ruck in his prime would well be worth a mid-high first round pick (2nd rounder + Minson for a mini draft pick anyone? would take it in a heart beat). Fingers crossed.... But it won't happen though.

Not much talk of Mayes on here, I love the kid and if we somehow got Mayes + Thompas (if he somehow drops to us) that would probably be the best case scenario from the draft I could think of. Captain and Vice Captain of SA and would be over the moon to be drafted with each other and would get the best out of them both.

My Western Bulldogs draft pick power rankings:

1. Thompas
2. Mayes
3. Gartlett
4. Stringer
5. Plowman

Would be interested to see how others rank our potential picks.

PS. Would not suprise me in the slightest to see Macca bid on Viney or draft another inside player.

Yeah can't see it happening but I would definitely take that Minson + 2nd rounder for mini draft pick, that means we would get exactly what we need from this draft, 2 outside mids and a quality FF in Hogan!

Mayes and Toumpas would be awesome together, and it would probably help keep them in Vic as well.

I agree with the Inside mid bit too but if Macca takes another inside mid I will be genuinely pissed, even if they are as good as Viney.

1. Toumpas
2. Garlett
3. Mayes
4. Stringer
5. Kennedy

Don't know much about Plowman but another key defender wouldn't hurt.

If we managed to walk away with 2 of those 5 players there ^^^, Hogan and Hunter we would be absolutely laughing!

I'd have Garlett 2nd as well but I'm so scared that he is going to be another Indigenous/WA player that we let down, we have a shocking record getting the best out of them and keeping them in Victoria. Love the guy though and if we pick him I really hope he becomes someone as electric and consistant as Bennell or Rioli.

Yeah I know but I think the risk is worth it, he has also said he wants to go to a club in Victoria and his 'issues' don't seem to be too worrying.

Well you keep your name if we miss out on Stringer?? :)

Hahaha we'll see, definitely not if he goes to North though. Really hope for the best and that he gets back to his pre-injury form

He wants to go to a Victorian club??? Sign him up right now!
