hypothetical for those who have a clue -

if we were considering garlett with one of our picks, would we be better served by going for martin in the mini-draft instead?

I think we are a bit over optimistic about Melbourne using pick 3 or 4 on Viney. GC or GWS get ABSOLUTELY NO benefit from nominating him if they don't want him. All risk, no reward. Doesn't make sense. Unless he's a top 2 player, he won't get nominated and he will go 2nd round. And, from the sounds of things, that's very debatable, with Whitfield a lock for number one, and a crap shoot based on needs for number 2.

Personally I think GC will take Whitfield, and GWS will force Melb. to use one of their first picks on Viney because that effectively makes their second pick one draft place lower, or makes one extra player option available to them to choose from. It costs them nothing as it is a dead set certainty Melb. will opt for Viney whatever the cost, as they know Whitfield will be gone. And he is probably the only one that Melb. would be tempted to take if available over Viney.

I'm hoping GWS finish last, because I think GC would bid on Viney. They need a player like him, especially if Caddy leaves (which is seeming pretty likely). After Whitfield, the next 7 or so selections are very even, which is why I think the clubs in this area are going to draft on a needs basis, rather than best available.

Whoever finishes last will take Whitfield. GWS won't nominate Viney, because it's way too risky for them, and they have plenty of his type of player. GC on the other hand, don't, and I think they would be comfortable taking him if Melbourne passed.

What did Freo end up with?
Well the trade was Trent Croad for picks 1, 20 and 36. Probably the most uneven trade ever, tbh :p Hawks ended up with Hodge, Daniel Elstone and Sam Mitchell. They ended up getting Croad back a few years later as well.

I'm wondering whether GC (if finish last) would be up for it if we finished below Melbourne. Trade something good to a 3rd party for a first rounder and bundle that up with pick 3 or 4 for no. 1. Expensive but Whitfield sounds a cut above and I want him.

If we want Garlett we could probably trade our pick 4 or 5 for say 8 or 9 and a player cause he might slip a bit.

Lake and pick 5 for Mini draft pick 2 and pick 9 or something (this obviously won't work cause GWS dont have pick 9 but you can see where I'm coming from!

All we would need is mini draft pick 2 because even if a team desperately needs a KPP so they go for Hogan we still get Martin who would go pick 2 in this draft.

Isn't it funny we finally get two top 10 draft picks, but now we want more, we want number one lol. Not that I am disagreeing, if we could clinch Whitfield by trading in our first pick and a player - get the deal done doggies.

GC have to reduce their list by 4 players this year. Plus I think they have a couple of rookies to promote. Plus they have this year's draft picks to add to their list (at least 3). That is 9 players, minimum.

Their trading strategy will be to try to bundle a player and a pick, for a better pick, etc. What I am saying is that if GC finish bottom, there is almost no way we will be able to bundle them a trade!!!

We might be able to use this to our advantage though regarding say McKenzie. Could send them our second-rounder, for their third-rounder plus McKenzie.

Also, as much as I wouldn't mind if we try to get one of the mini-draft picks this year (Hogan looks like he is going to be a real gun), I would kinda prefer it if we just stick to drafting 2012 players. In 2013, there is so much that could go wrong with Hogan, so the risk of swapping a likely premium midfielder (we could select say Stringer and Toumpas) for him is one I wouldn't look to take unless completely necessary.

Have to remember that although our KPFs are yet to fire, we actually have a list full of KPFs at the moment, it's just they're young and haven't played enough games.

Jones (40 odd games) is a career CHF, Cordy has shown quite a bit at FF in his 10 games. With those 2 in the forward-line as our future, along with a resting ruck, we definitely can't look to play another KPF.

Really, we need quality mids!

Agree my example was probably unders, but my point is that pick upgrades are what GC will be chasing more than anything this year to reduce the number of players they have to delist...

BTW, what do you think he's worth?
Yeah makes sense. I wouldn't have a clue to be honest, haven't really watched as much footy this year (other than dogs) as I would have liked. but I remember he was a gun in his first year, might have dropped off a bit this year though.

He's had a pretty quiet year. Played pretty well on the weekend though.

Josh Simpson sounds like a likely prospect for us - any further info? Also, two born on exactly the same day - my birthday - is it a sign:p

With 25 players sampled it's slightly odds-on that any two of them will share a birthday (see "the birthday problem"). However the odds of them being the same birthday as you are clearly astronomical.
So it is truly a sign: We will draft Jaksch and Wines. (D_r_b to be their manager)

There you go problem solved, will win the next five premiership!! Seriously the last player we recruited who shares my birthday is Addison - very durable player as is this supporter :D

Really like him as a player, quick, good skills and still goes in pretty hard despite his small size, I hope he slides to second round pick but in reality he will prob go first round somewhere, better options where our pick will be. Only concern is he left SA to go back to WA to be close to his family so flight risk there although he has stated he wanted to be close to family for 1 year before he got drafted
