If Viney wasn't related to Todd Viney where exactly would he go in the draft? Is he good enough to be Top 5?
Top 10, easily. If he didn't break his jaw, he could have put in a better showing as well, so he could have gone top 5.

So really it would be stupid not to force the Dees to use their 1st pick for him otherwise they are getting a steal.
Pretty much. But teams will put their own priorities before trying to screw it up for Melbourne. In saying that, GC's priorities are a player like Jack Viney, which is why I can see them bidding on him. Their win yesterday was a big step in that happening, because it got them off the bottom of the ladder.

With our 2 picks inside the top 10 we need to be targeting players who have x-factor. The Cyril/Harley Bennel mold is exactly what we should be targeting. Garlett or Toumpas is almost a must but there isn't a great chance they will fall to 6th or 7th pick where we most likely will fall. Really hope we don't use the 2 picks inside the top 10 on a big.

If we could nail Garlett and Mayes/Stringer/Menzel it would be a huge step forward for the club already. We need to target outside run with elite foot skills. What we would do to see an Andrew Gaff in a Bulldogs jersey.

I like the idea of chasing Hogan in the mini-draft but do not like the idea of trading Minson as I don't see Roughead/Cordy being anywhere near ready to be a number one ruck-men. At this point in time I see more chance of Campbell being a number one ruck-men compared to the latter. Throwing Lake at GWS could be ideal, that being said if we could trade Minson for Hogan we would be dumb not to take it but the rucks would really worry me.

There's a lot of question marks about our 22 next season but if we could build something around this;

Wood FB Austin
HB Williams Murphy
W Boyd Wallis
HF Jones Dahlaus
Higgins FF Dickson

R Griffen Picken

Libba, Tutt, Howard, Grant, Smith, DJ?, Sherman? etc

FB: Will most likely be Lake but could be Markovic if Lake if shopped around which I doubt.

HB: Pray JJ comes through, he has a lot of Harbrow about his game and he's exaclty what this team lacks, Patty Vez could also be an option for this position.

W: Must draft here, pray it's Garlett or Toumpus

HF: Would love to use the other top 10 pick here, maybe Sam Mayes type.

FF: God knows, Cordy, Hill, Hogan(maybe) could play here, hope it's Cordy

R: Could be Minson/Roughy/TC

Another factor clubs will consider in whether to bid for Viney is whether - after being nurtured by the Dees for years - he would actually settle at any other club. He obviously (and rightly) expects he will be at Melbourne in November and there could be a serious go-home factor in 2 years if he was drafted by GCS or GWS.

That prospect may be enough to tip the scales and stop them bidding for him. To that end it's in Melbourne's interest to encourage as much doubt and uncertainty around young Viney as possible.

Djkuerra won't make it. He's an in between VfL AfL footballer.
Melbourne fans and now Schwab are exhibiting empty posturing on Viney.
They're going to take Viney ( imagine the fallout if they don't!)

Check-out the phantom drafts - most have him rated as a top 3-5 player.

After Whitfield, he probably suits Gold Coast more than any other player in the draft, he is an absolute gun inside midfielder.

If GC finish 17th, expect him to be nominated I reckon (hence forcing Melbourne's hand at pick 3).

The only players that seemed to catch my eye in the championships are Toumpas, Grundy and Whitfield. The other highly rated prospects put in some inconsistent performances. I am not sure what happens if Toumpas and Whitfield are taken at our picks, Grundy seems like a once in a generation ruck, do we pass on someone that has the potential to be a ruckman on the tier of Dean Cox because we have so many rucks?.

I wish the final delisting date is after the draft and also an additional trade period after the draft, so if certain scenarios such as a ruck appears to be our best pick we can still balance our list.

Also something else i noticed, you need two really solid years of drafting close to one another to really build the foundation to a premiership.

Our 1999 draft almost took us to a grand final, Geelong's strong drafting in 1999 and 2001 netted ~9 200 gamers.

Currently our 2010 looks very good, Wallis, Dahlhaus, Liberatore and perhaps JJ.

If we can nail 2012, we will have done majority of the hard work. Even a pass mark isnt an option let alone failure, we need to do well.

Add Clay Smith from the 2011 draft?

Not sure about Clay Smith, I have doubts that he will make it. I see Tory Dickson making it though, also see Campbell becoming our first ruck when Minson retires/leaves. Unsure about the rest.

True - kicking not his best attribute. I think Cross has improved over the years though. He certainly goes on to his left with a fair bit of confidence.
probably another season under his belt will improve his kicking, just needs to think ahead before kicking.

Have some fans actually had a look of late? Cross is now one of the most reliable kicks on our team. A combination of him working hard at the skill, and a number of more highly rated team mates going backward unfortunately.

he said Cross was a good kicker.

Just to clarify - the first bit of the post you quoted was directed at Clay Smith, not Cross.

Cross is a perfect kick if the distance is under 45m, never misses a short target. Its when he has to kick long that he struggles.
It's his occasional hesitation to kick that costs him, not his ability.
Soem poorer kicks do improve over time, Jobe Watson being the best example. I have no doubt Clay Smith will make the grade and play plenty of games ofr us - I'm not sure he'll ever get to an A grade level though. The only youngster I am certian will get to A grade is Libba.

So unless there is an absolute stand out KP forward or KP defender in the draft (think Joe Daniher), then we really do need to go after classy outside mids. We don't need to get another long term KP tall prospect, we have enough of them as we speak.
I'd be happy with a medium forward type too - I like the sound of Stringer although I haven't seen him play. Sounds like the type we need

Yeah I have heard he's pretty good, I have seen a bit of footage. Some of the guys on here rate him. He's also a midfielder I believe, but I'm not sure he is that quick.....I really think we need to recruit some serious pace.
