This the shape of the backline I would like settled in for the start of 2012;

Faulks MacPharlin Grover

Mzungu Silvagni Suban

Broughton, Ibbotson, Hayden and Duffield perhaps the obvious omissions, but they will get time in there. Broughton for more time in the midfield. Ibbotson is just an ordinary player back there for mine, and if he can find another position, great.

Hayden; if he is retained then getting him on the ground will be significant for us. He may be a better fit forward, and I could see him as a sub being used well, but he would be best 22.

Kick-ins is a major issue for us. I think it is strategy as much as it is skill. Once "kick it long to Sandi" has grown thin, we are shite.

Faulks is obviously not a lock for best 22 or a certainty to keep any of the experienced players out. But it is the area of the ground we recruited him for, and he needs to do it next season so I have backed him in. His flexibility tall and small, and the fact that he seems a genuine stopper is what I like.

I'd have Broughton back in there over Faulks - only an average midfielder and is not dangerous enough with the ball, but has good defensive skills. But anyway it will be something around that...

Broughton should be our tagger

His potential as a tagger who will be dangerous himself excites me. He pretty much needs tagging himself and has a good defensive mindset. It is also an area I want Ibbotson looked at. If it doesn't work as a midfield tagger it won't hurt his defensive abilities in the backline.

Ibbotson has the physical tools to be a tagger. Dont know about up top.
He has tagged Judd before, but Harvey prefers to use him as a backman/winger due to his superb foot skills.

For me Broughton doesn't run hard enough defensively when in the midfield to be a tagger at the moment. He's great down back as a reader of the play, but hes already in position to defend.

That is purely a coaching thing though with him I think. He is clearly a disciplined player who has the tools if given the task and the coaching to play that role. An off-season task.

The reason I suggested Broughton is because gone are the days that taggers are just that. They also need to get alot of the ball themselves, which is why I rate Broughton. De boer should stick to the defensive forward role, or possibly a small defensive position

Know what you are saying, but just think Ibbotson has more skill with the ball and has a higher hurt factor if you are talking about moving one of those guys in there permanently as a run with player. i would go Hurt factor over possessions.

I would like to see the percentage of players we have actually playing in their best position increase next year. Broughton's is probably backline, but he clearly causes some pain in the midfield, and de Boer's is clearly the forward line.

The backline is definitely the most settled part of the team but this backline is probably a bit top heavy especially for a team that cant stop small forwards. In the past Grover and Mcpharlin have been quite injury prone so we would probably only have three fit talls at any one stage.

Need to find a small close checking defender and Mzungu definitely fits the build but I think Crichton should also be seriously looked at to fill this role. I think Broughton should spend more time through the middle.

Faulks really impressed me yesterday, he has some genuine talent.

Duffield looks absolutely done and dusted

Faulks made some good decisions under pressure. Was a bit off his opponent initially but tightened up well as the game went on. Looks like he has pretty good kicking and skills.

Duffield at 26 should be in his prime. It has to be asked what he provides. Isn't fast , isn't strong. It was his distribution that we used him for before and sometimes he could find space. Doesn't seem to fit anymore. Could he be Schammered to the wafl next year?

How long is Roger out for? I'm hesitant to think he'll be a 22-game player ever again. I think he's hit that period where he becomes a magnet for injuries. If we keep him fit and manage his leg well, he's a definite for the back flank. He plays the position sublimely. Got a great defensive mind and he's able to read the forwards, as well as the bounce of the ball. Seeing him run out of the backline and pick out a Fyfe or Hill is a real treat to watch.

Ibbotson hasn't impressed me too much this season. His decision making has been quite poor. Mzungu for the kick-ins? I guess Grover and McPharlin have experience, which could certainly help kicking off the restarts.
