Injury 2012 Carlton Injury List Update #2 - Keep it all in here

They would still do the operation if Davies is going to be cut. It wouldn't go down too well with the AFLPA if you delisted a player and said no to paying for the operation they need to continue their career.

Kerr got patched up before we delisted him this year.

Nice sig.

The club needs oxygen marks to aid our recovery after long flights...

So we have 5 players that have gone in for post-season ops. Murphy, Robinson, Davies, Kreuzer and one other.

We've also had Warnock, Hampson, Henderson, Laidler, Casboult, Tuohy, McInnes and Watson that had ops before seasons end.

That still makes for a total of 13 players that at this stage may have slow starts to the pre-season.

That's still not to bad, when you consider Laidler, Henderson and Hampson all had surgery mid year, and the post season ops were all pretty minor. You'd have to think the majority of the list will be ready to go earlt into our preseason.

Nope, we will just have all our surgery starting from round three again. It's called list management.

FWIW Tom Bell is currently back in Qld recovering from shoulder surgery, nothing too serious by the sounds of things.

Just for a little perspective, although Hawthorn and Sydney have played 2 finals each (ie 24 games),
Jeremy Laidler has missed as many games this year as Hawthorn's entire back 6, AND Sydney's entire back 6, COMBINED.

Each of the Grand Final teams have not been missing more than 1 of their back 6 in any game this year.
That's how you win a premiership.

When I read of the extent of the injuries to the Hawks and Sydney back 6 I actually felt a wave of nausea pass through me. In 1995 we were invincible with a back 6 (indeed whole side) that played largely injury free. Having a stable back 6 is easily the most important factor because (a) so many of the offensive plays must start with the defenders; and (b) errors leading to turnovers usually get punished severely.

I have no doubt that had we had a good run without injuries comparable to Hawth or Syd we would have been every chance. Let's face it Hawthorn have significant structural weaknesses in the ruck and key defenders. Sydney are even in most positions (Shaw will be a liability come GF day) but, Goodes to one side, lack game turning brilliance.

If this is so then the question is NOT "What players do we need to recruit for which positions?" The question IS "How do we keep our best players on the park playing close to their peak most of the time?" We seem accomplished at re-injuring players already injured: Laidler this year, Jamison, Curnow last year etc. I want to recruit sports medicine experts who have a clue and will make themselves heard.

Bang!
Been saying this since................forever it seems.

Laidler out for basically the year.
Jamison out for part of the year and played injured for another part.
Henderson out for half the year and played injured for another part of it.
Tuohy out for 2 weeks, but played when injured for the latter part of the year.
Yarran out for 4 weeks and also played restricted for a part of the year.

Duigan and White also missing for parts of the year for injury.

You won't win much when you can't settle your back-line.

Reckon you could throw Simon white in there as well Harks.
Given his form in the latter part of the year, he would have been an ideal replacement for Laidler had he been fit at the time.
Amazing that when you spell it out like that how bad our injuries were to our best back 6.

Will laidler be 100% fine next year or will his knee be susceptible to popping out again? really hope it just needed to heal correctly to make sure the structure is strong.

You only have to look at Warren Tredrea and Daryn Cresswell. Their kneecaps popped out on a monthly basis. OTOH, it didn't stop them playing over 200 games each.

It was an act of mercy when Tredrea popped it the first time. He'd kicked eight 'til half-time.

Think Ben Stratton played every game this year after dislocating his knee cap a year ago.

Injury update
Blues football operations manager Andrew McKay said a specialist decided not to insert the standard metal plate into Murphy's shoulder blade to avoid possible nerve complications.

"He had a fracture rather than a displacement," McKay said.

"So they left it and made sure he didn't move it for a long time, and it healed normally because they were concerned if they plated it, it might impinge on the nerve. Now there's a bit of fibrous tissue that's formed and they went in and got rid of that.

"We've just got to manage the knee until Christmas and I imagine he'll be able to train by about December."

Kreuzer will be on a restricted program when Malthouse officially starts working with the players at Visy Park on Melbourne Cup eve.

"He had a partial meniscus (cartilage) tear," McKay said.

"He played with it the whole year and he's had that tidied up."

Andrew McInnes began work on a stationary bike last week and will steadily build to a May return.

McKay said Carlton was far better placed to start pre-season training than last year, particularly with several operations, including ruckman-forward Shaun Hampson (knee) and backman Lachie Henderson (hip), late in the season to ensure they're ready to go on November 5.

"We had 20 odd surgeries at the end of last season and a lot of those guys didn't get back into full training until Christmas or after Christmas. But that's not the case this year," he said.
