So being presumptuous and looking to the WGPs, possible opponents:

Kazakhstan
Russia
Canada
Switzerland
Italy
Sweden
Japan
Germany

Wouldn't want to play Switzerland or Canada, and Italy would be pretty rough away from home, but other than that I reckon we'd do okay.

Ebden won in striaght as well. Being stuck in Asia/Oceania Zone is like the Australian Soccer team when they had to qualify for the World Cup back in the Oceania days, the early qualy round were ridiculously easy and we would always lose at the final stage. Just waiting for September, a little bit annoying that Ebden and Tomic and co. have to fly back down here for it tbh, all would be rather working on their rankings...

DC QF more importantly tonight. Fish is out of the DC tie with France so Harrison is going to give the Monte Carlo clay a go tonight, should be interesting but France are solid favourites now. Serbia witn no Novak should be interesting against the Czechs, Spaina nd Argentina should breeze through.

We won the dubs 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-2. If we draw Italy or Canada it will be played in Australia anywhere else we will go away. If its Kazakhstan they will toss a coin to decide.

Anyone know what happened with the Stepanek/Tipsy thing? Apparengly Steps gave Tips the bird.

Anyway Oceania zone is boring. Its a shame we couldn't get it done over the Suisse last year.

Canada or Italy at home would be good, Canada would be tough though if Raonic played. Japan and Sweden away would be good ties to get as well, Sweden without Soderling is basically nothing.

Tsonga hates playing big servers and Isner seems to be finding his feet on the clay. Not a surprising result to be honest. Pretty great effort for the States to make the semis, Spain should be too touch but Isner for the greatest Davis Cup feat in history. Argentina will be at home for the other semi against the Czechs.

We draw Germany in Germany. I assume it will be on clay. German team will look something like this Mayer, Kohlschrieber, Petszchner and Kamke/Stebe. Very tough. Tomic is playing a full clay court season this year so hopfully he improves and we have Hewitt back then to be any chance.

And thats why the Swiss and Blegium losses were so gutwrenching. Another year in Asia/Oceania zone  No chance in hell we are beating them on clay.

Play it in Halle!

If they played the argies on clay......no chance they are not going to play us on it.

All of them are super flakey players, about the only thing to cling to.

Is Lleyton expected to play? Kohlschreiber and Petzchner are a bit inconsistent from what I can gather, but if they're on I doubt the Aussies will get a look in. Didn't Lleyton play when we beat France on clay one year? Maybe I've my wires crossed.

Yeah Hewitt will be back then. He will be back for Queens. Davis cup is week after US Open.

The Poo's moment of glory. He is playing the masters tour, perhaps give him a call, he's probably the best clay courter we have :D

Oh dear this is almost sadly true.

I would be surprised if Hewitt holds up to play a tie on clay but I suspect after the Olympics he will be foucusing on being fit for DC more than New York, I hope he has one last momentus tie in him. Because I can't stress enough how much how we have no chance if Lleyton doesn't play.

Time to sticky this thread for next weekend's tie, Australia has a big playoff tie against Germany over there on the clay:
Australia:
Lleyton Hewitt
Bernard Tomic
Matt Ebden
Chris Guccione

Germany:
Florian Mayer
Philipp Kohlischriber
Ben Becker
Cedrik-Marcel Stebe

Strange choice to choose Ebden over Matosevic but it's for the back-up singles spot anyway. No Kohli for Germany might give us a small chance. Hewitt is going to pull of a mircale if we are any hope. Play begins on 7TWO at 7.30pm Friday.

The Davis Cup semis:
Spain vs. USA
Argentina vs. Czech Republic

Spain on the clay should be too good but US have been an upset machine. Czechs will have to rely on Berdych but Argentina obivously the stronger team on clay.

Thanks for the times. Didnt know 7TWO were showing. Really pumped for this i really think we can get back to the world group here. Im pretty sure Kohlschreiber isnt playing and Petzschner is.

A really good chance to make it back to the world group this weekend. No prediction on Tomic, but Hewitt will do everything possible to win. Thinking it might be split 1-1 at the end of the first day. The doubles is going to be tough with Petzschner, who is one of the best doubles players on the tour when he is playing well. But Hewitt is also one of the better doubles players in my opinion and if Guccione is serving well, we are a good chance of getting the win there.

1-0 up.

Rubbish first set and then tightened up serving for it in the 4th but got the job done in the breaker.

I expect Mayer to win his two rubbers, this is almost a free hit now for Lleyton.

Giving up that easily on Hewitt in the Davis Cup? Hewitt is more than a chance to win.

Only able to follow the scores online so can't comment on Tomic's performance. But in what was a very important opening tie, I'm glad he was able to get the win.

I actually gave Lleyton more chance at winning tonight than Tomic.

Tomic gets the win by the only way he knows how, ugly.
