If I had money on it, I'd say he'll become a Dale Thomas or Steve Johnson kind of player. Nothing to be sneezed at, but I think our immediate needs for high quality players are in the tall forward department and in and around the clearances -we need an extractor and a break-away player. I think the other three fit in those categories, more so than Mayes.

I don't think our need for a forward of centre midfielder (which is what I see Mayes as) is any less than our need for an extraction mid. I reckon we lack run and carry as much as we lack clearances. We've got lots of guys who are going to spend time at the contest - we are still missing the players who spread away and use the ball in a damaging way.

I think our greatest need is quality talls at either end of the ground but it doesn't look as though this year's talent is going to fall our way in terms of pick 8. That being the case, I'd be comfortable with a Mayes, McRae and even Garlett, assuming we are comfortable with his commitment and attitude. Not saying that we couldn't use a contested footy midfielder but I reckon we're in a good position in that, of the players likely to be available at pick 8, the best available will probably suit our needs too.

Quigs interesting point that Mayes could be a PK replacement should he leave. For some reason in my head I viewed Mayes as a taller version of Polec rather than that hybrid third tall (i.e. PK).

From the looks of things Mayes and Polec are a similar height but Mayes' shoulders are far broader which makes his body shape much more similar to Karnezis.

I heard Kevin Sheahan saying that on talent in this draft the top 4 are Whitfield, Toumpas, Grundy and Menzel. Do you agree with this Quigs? If so, do you think we should take a punt and take Menzel with pick 8 if he's available?

Just playing with the Draft Machine; what are the knocks on Matthew Taberner, Michael Close and Sam Gordon that see them barely mentioned?

I would jump all over Mayes if he is there. He made AA last season as a forward and if he was up there this year Menzel would have been the second option I think. Mayes was moved up the ground this year to show what he could do and is coming on fine in that regard but he will be a forward first and foremost at AFL level. In that role he will be very good possibly elite. He is the best finisher this year in front of goal this year by a large margin and has the speed and marking ability to take his game to the AFL. If he fell to us I would not think twice. I have no doubt he would be the guy that everyone hopes Karnezis will become.

you wouldn't be keen to take a punt on stringer if available quigley?

Macrae I like but I am not sure he fits our needs particularly well.

My impression of Macrae from the small amounts I've seen and heard of him is that he could be just about anything: an inside mid, outside mid, sweeping defender, flanker/winger or even a mid-sized forward. I take it you see him as a more limited player?

According to Callum Twomey on AFL website:
But if Port choose to overlook Grundy he will get through to the Tigers, with Brisbane not interested in drafting another ruckman after choosing Billy Longer last year at pick eight.

Mindgames have begun. Clubs have very little to gain by giving the media a truthful heads-up of their intentions.

If a reporter seems as sure as Twomey is there, it is probably a fair guess they've been bullshitted.

Delisted, so you'd think they take Grundy now.

It seems it might be more a case of Tippett (now that he's PSD bound) or Brogan, with Grundy only coming into play if he slides all the way to 12 or 14.

For the experts, what qualities do you think that Nick Vlaustin lacks that will drop him from the top 10 picks compared to the likes of Macrae / O'Rourke / Mayes.

From only the very limited footage ive seen, i think macrae seems alot closer to polec than mayes. Can anyone else see such similarities?

Macrae is not nearly as talented as Polec imo. He doesn't have the same speed or x-factor, also Polec's ball use is better. Macrae does find more of the ball though.

I'll take that anytime. As Jack Dyer would say, if you can't get it you can't kick it.

When watching the TAC GF live I noticed that the ball also found Macrae a lot.

He seem to follow the ball a fair bit just short of a kick behind the play and when the opposition slammed it on the boot 9 times out of 10, he was about the fall of the ball. Seems to read the play very well.

Cheers for that. I guess it was more his size and evading skills i was hinting to. Going by your response, considering polec went at pick 6 i believe, sounds as though macrae should go a little later than our pick? Or does his ball finding ability more than make up for those comparisons to polec?

Looks a beast. Can't see us using any of our first three picks on him at age 26 so that leaves pick 91 and if St Kilda are keen presumably they would have pounced by then (e.g. their pick 77, or even 41/44).

On KM mock draft a Blues fan reckons us and the Saints have show interest in Jesse Wells.

It's a pretty impressive highlights video. Good size, look strong and definitely applies a lot of pressure and offers some good chase. Not sure we'd offer up any of use any of our current picks though considering his age. But we do need key forwards with size, strength and around that age bracket (though preferably a year or two younger). Has anyone seen much of him? Would be worth a punt at 32/33 or is he a big fish in a small pond?
