Healy stated that GWS have already advised their top 3 picks. Whitfield, Plowman and O' Rourke. Also he believes Wines to Melbourne at 4. Geez I hope we are a shot at Menzel or Toumpas. Wouldn't mind Grundy if he can play key forward.

Toumpas sliding will be a dream come true but surely we won't get two top 3 sliders within 5 years. Mayes, Grundy or Stringer the guys with a supposedly realistic chance of availability I've now committed myself to hoping see become a Lion.

Dogs get a shot at Menzel, Toumpas, Mayes, Stringer, Grundy, McRae if Healy is right. Jesus!

I'll preface my remarks by pointing out that I have tipped us to select him at 8. Having said that, I don't think in today's footy you could have a 203 cm guy permanently at FF, regardless of his mobility. I think if we select him it will be because he is a very good ruck prospect who may well provide the option of resting him at FF rather than just rotating off the bench.
He actually measured at 201.8 cm at draft camp which is only 0.8cm taller than Daniher who is being talked up as the best tall forward this year. Therefore purely his height certainly isn't an issue. Will come down to his mobility, marking and reading of the flight of the ball.

I'm really finding it hard to get my head around where the hell Grundy is supposed to fit in the pecking order.

A couple of weeks ago, he was a virtual lock for GWS at 2 or 3.......and now, some have him sliding as far as 14:eek:

I'm on record as having limited knowledge of most of the names being thrown up in phantom drafts and the like....but hell....if a beast like Grundy was still there at 8, surely he's worth a look.

I'm in the boat where I want us to take someone with the potential to be elite - even if there is an added risk.

If he is as talented up forward as the experts are claiming, I'm not ruling out us nabbing Grundy.
And if he truly is as elite as everybody is saying, then I'd rather him in there than a far lower quality draftee.

Having three star rucks in a year or two's time in Luey, Longer and Grundy could provide some great leverage at the trade table if we decide to on-trade one of them to bolster our midfield or other positional stocks. Top-quality ruckmen are worth their weight in gold. And if we grow to have a surplus of them in the future, then I'm excited as to what kind of trade currency that can bring. Plenty more gun midfielders out there than gun ruckmen!

How many rucks have been traded for an early first rounder in the past 10 years?
A point everyone should note. There is no point picking up Grundy with the intention of trading him down the track. Ruckmen are generally traded after requesting a trade when they find it difficult to crack the senior team. As they've been rarely sighted at that point their career, they generally get traded for a second rounder or thereabouts. However, I believe Grundy can make an impact in the same side as Longer and Leuie. Am I crazy?

Yeah, Daniher is being touted as a key forward, at u18 level. Interesting to see where he spends his time at AFL level.

Very few early first rounders ever get traded. Of course, we offered pick 8 for Tippett who was originally drafted as a ruckman.

But I agree it would make no sense at all to have three top ten drafted ruckmen on the books in the hope that we could trade one of them.

If we do take Grundy, then I'm just going to assume that there are doubts about Leuenberger's long term fitness.

Hundreds of phone calls later, here is how it stands: GWS set to take Whitfield, O'Rourke & Plowman in that order. Dees Toumpas. #AFLDraft
Based on what we now know...
1. Whitfield
2. O'Rourke
3. Plowman
4. Toumpas
5. (Dogs)
6. (Dogs)
7. (Power) - said they will take the best available South Australian
8. ???

Think Wines & Menzel will land at Footscray, while Port will be left to chose between Mayes & Grundy.

Which leaves us some serious talent to select - one of Mayes/Grundy, Stringer, Macrae. And of course Jaksch...

For years, we seemed to avoid them. Taking Longer last year, on top of Karnezis and Lester the year before, tends to suggest that we've changed tact. Adding another one with a very early pick would pretty much cement that.

I also think it is interesting in light of homesickness rumours of Karnezis.
POBT, one thing we aren't shy of is selecting Tasmanians - certainly no go home factor there. And I see it suggested in the AFL Phantom Draft that we have shown interest in two more for our pick 33 - Jackson Thurlow and Sam Siggins. The latter looks and plays a bit like Justin Clarke and is very impressive.

A quick clearance from the centre with one kick to a tall forward or resting ruck, ala a Paul Salmon era? Will history repeat?
If you have a dynamic ruck in the middle and two mobile rucks up forward you can just focus on killing the ball in your forward 50. Get it inside, get a thrown un and let the rucks tap it down to a mosquito fleet (Zorko, Green) or the guys who are efficient at scoring from the stoppages (Rich, Raines).

Give the latest injury, there have to be doubts about Leuey's ongoing fitness.
If Grundy slips to the teens as some predict then when teams with higher picks say they are selecting best available with their first pick they mean best available non-ruckman.

According to the Contract status thread, Leunberger is out of contract at the end of next year? If so you would think a cashed up Freo could have a real go at him (although they would be a big gun shy in tussling with Kerr again), in which case another elite ruckman on the books wouldn't hurt.

No chance you guys could take it as a sign we see the trio potentially functioning together?
Not in my case. Luey, Longer and Grundy are all ruckmen. For them all to play in the same 22 one has to play forward 100% of the time, and one has to play forward 60-70% of the time at least. I'm not sure any of them are worth a top 10 pick as forwards alone, or even as forward/ruckmen.

Now that's an interesting conspiracy theory. If Luey had flagged to the club that he wanted to return to WA for some reason we might be gearing up to trade him. I think it's highly unlikely though.
