Just to alleviate some of the apprehension, Close is seen by many as a versatile kpp that could easily develop into a chb, as Quigs has already stated. Switched ends quite regularly for the Rebels this season and it was only injury that kept him from the big games during the Nationals.

Paparone isn't the greatest kick, which is a flaw he will need to address in order for him to get the proper rewards for his hard work. Contested marking isn't a strength either, so he'll need to get better in that area to become a more potent attacking weapon at AFL level. If he's to come up onto a wing on a regular basis he'll also need to work on being a bit cleaner below his knees.

This is what I love about the draft period. Rarely will you see people get worked up about something they know so little about. Even if a player looks like a star, it doesn't mean he'll be one and there are always surprises.
Our recruiting staff hasn't done any wrong over the last few years and I don't see any reason to doubt them now. Welcome to the club boys, can't wait to see what Mayes can do.
Hard to judge atm. I am hoping that at this time next year other clubs are saying we were the big winners of the draft after using our first two picks on Conway and Tickner.
At the Champs I thought Conway was behind only Crouch amongst the bottom aged inside mids. He was at least as impressive as Aish and McDonald.
Your right since 2008 the drafting has been good, the 5 years or so prior............. yikes what were they thinking!

1116 surprised with brisbane lions picks after mayes (some very good experts there)- Tim obrien quigs picked in mocked draft which i liked and many non brisbane lions big footy members did as well , i would like to rookie draft dayle gartlett. non selection i hope dents his pride and he starts to show some character .massive test of strength of character for him
Not out of the question that he could bambam. He lacks a physical side to his game and I don't really see him as being a pack crashing target but he has the height and he could be a bit of a different style of CHF than we are used to. As he puts on weight though you never know what might come.

Just watched the video interview from Mayes. Gee he seemed very nervous. Didn't seem like he had the sads about becoming a Lion though. They showed a few highlights. He has a pretty good leg on him.

Kerr described Paparone as a 'long runner'. I've seen a few other coaching members previously use this term for O'Brien and Bewick. Clearly an asset the club rates highly.
Seems the nerves were pretty overwhelming when he was drafted.
