2012 Draft Discussion

Where did you hear this about Clay, Patty? Last I heard the Suns were still keen on him. He played at the intra-club only a few weeks ago. Surprising to hear they've gone cold on him so fast.

His best mate went to my school (as did he, actually, but he was a few years below me), and told me last week that he was a bit worried the Suns hadn't been super impressed with his performance in the later stages of the pre-season. May have no substance to it at all - he did tell me that Clay has always been quite overly self-critical, so he may be reading into nothing - but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Either way, there's still a year of footy to play before any decisions are made, so I'm sure if the Suns have gone a bit cold on him, he could and from what I've seen probably will turn that around quickly. Expecting a big year from him.

I think zone selection would come first. The F/S plays out in the draft whereas the zone selection exempts a player from the draft totally. Just guessing though.

If it's anything like the preselection of players who had nominated for previous drafts, then it trumps the draft and isn't optional. Cam Richardson, when he was first preselected, didn't want to play for the Suns but wasn't going to have a choice until they traded him to the Roos.

The father/son will have priority if the player decides to take that up. See this year with young Viney and the options that were flying around there. Like Murphy a few years ago a player does not have to accept the father/son offer but if they do then it will trump the other schemes out there including the Qld zone picks.

My understanding of the Viney situation is that he did not nominate for the GWS mini draft. If he had, he would have had to go to the club that picked him in the mini-draft, irrespective of his father-son connection. In other words, the GWS concession trumped father-son. But he didn't nominate for the mini-draft because he had the assurance from Melbourne that he would be taken F/S in 2012.

edit: a bit more research and it appears that Viney was never mini-draft eligible. At least, that's what Emma Quayle tweeted at the time.

Do you see us trading our way to a higher position in the draft? At this point, I can't think of anyone who'd I be happy to lose that would have trade value, but that's another angle that could come into play.

Two or three QLDr's who will probably go top 25 this year (at this stage, that is). Would love us to grab at least one of them - and have heard the Suns have gone a bit cold on activating their QLD zone priority selections on them, despite the fact one of them (Clay Cameron) even trained for part of the pre-season with them.

It'll definitely be a year to pay attention to how the prospects are coming along. Would love to get a genuine Patton-style KPF out of this draft. We can all dream.

Not so sure about that. I'm fairly certain he will be wearing a Suns jumper next season.

Maybe if there was some interest or Hawksley/Stiller we could upgrade a few spots, but I don't think anything big would come out of it. Maybe GWS would take Buchanan :p.

Apart from that, guys with trade value but aren't 100% 'essential' like Banfield and Cornelius I would not want to see gone whatsoever. So all in all, unless we get a good offer, I doubt it.

While probably the case (my info was far from concrete by any stretch), I'm worried to face him four years down the track in a developed Suns side. He will be a star.

Compo picks

THE Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney have decided to utilise extra first-round draft picks in 2012, meaning this year's bumper national draft will have a crowded first round and clubs will be pushed back in the pecking order.

Geelong, which still has another first-round compensation pick for losing Gary Ablett to Gold Coast (it received two first rounds for Ablett), has decided not to use that remaining first-round choice this year.

The Gold Coast also has chosen not to activate its two end-of-first-round draft picks...

No mention of the Lions. The deadline for activating compo picks is tomorrow (Tuesday).

Patrick Keane

5 clubs today elected to use a total of 7 compensation selections at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft in November this year.

Extra picks activated today - W Bulldogs rd1; GWS rd1; Melb rd1; Melb mid-rd1; Bris end rd1; Rich rd2; W Bulldogs rd3.

Not that I want to lose him as such but whilst he still has some currency I think Merrer to Carlton is a viable option. There so called window is (Judd) is going to finish soon and they need more depth down back. They might make top 8 and it would be handy pick to have.

Carlton will almost certainly finish above us and even if they didn't I don't see the pick they can offer being worth anywhere near as much as Merrett is to us.

As much as I love welcoming new players in, it always means saying good bye to others.

I hate the end of the year! Especially when Joel hasn't signed a new contract!!!!!!! (Of course given that half of the fan base probably wants to trade him anyway...:()

I really don't think our team has any areas where we desperately need to draft someone to fill in a gap - it's now just a matter of maturing the bodies we've got.

1. I was being facetious (Nuggo got it) :p

2. Do the Suns need Tippett and do they have the cap space going forward?

1. Yeah, got it, but I'm still struggling with Tapatalk ATM, emoticon-wise.

2. Once they figure out Day is a dud they will, but yeah cap space might be a problem for them.

Yeah, can't see the Suns making a play for Tippett. They've already said RE: Tippett that they won't be getting him at the moment because of his price tag. Cannot afford him if they want to keep the young guns. Said during trade week.

If we lose a few young stars at the end of this year, maybe? But otherwise can't see it. If he does come back to QLD, it will be to Brisbane.
