Looks like it'll be between picks 8 and 10.

Based on current ladder positions it would be...

1. Gold Coast
2. GWS
3. Melbourne
4. Melbourne (Scully compo)
5. Port Adelaide
6. Western Bulldogs
7. Western Bulldogs (Ward compo)
8. Fremantle
9. Brisbane

I'm glad the AFL did away with the incentive to tank.

Don't want Gartlett. Does he not want to drop punt?? Seemed to try to kick across his body banana style all the time. Too much of a showmen.

I watched him in person a few weeks ago and was very impressed. His skills were great I thought and he is the kind who creates things for others. He has improved a lot this year playing outside and in through the midfield and there is no reason to think he will not improve significantly more once he gets into a full time environment. I certainly wouldn't mind him being a Lion next year.

I didn't watch all of the game yesterday but what I did get to see I didn't like. Too much of a show pony with his kicking it just annoyed me. Looked a decent player though.

TBD's ladder list would represent the very real possibility of both Shaw and Hogan being out of reach, as both Freo and the Western Bulldogs both require a KPF.

(Edit- Hogan out of reach by being outbid in the mini draft)

In regards to mini draft picks and freo in another board they were saying that they are interested more in J Martin than Hogan.

Did you have similar feelings about Akermanis?

No, my gripe is the way Garlett was kicking being a show pony. Aker was actually one of the best players going around while Garlett is an under 18's player so not really able to compare are we.

Does anyone know when Wines is likely to go? From what I saw, He'd be the kid I'd be using our first rounder on. Absolute Jet. Garlett looked impressive, and would add some serious X-Factor (something we've been lacking), and he looks like he is definitely willing to chase and apply pressure.

Gotta say, I was not impressed with Shaw. Looked really, really soft  (First and only time I've seen him, so feel free to correct me if what I said was out of line)

5-10 seems to be the consensus on the draft & trading board at this stage.

Wines looked great, but I think he is too inside for our needs. I reckon he'll go top 10-12.

If we aren’t in the frame for KPF (Hogan primarily) or Sam Mayes is gone, from the very little I have seen I don’t mind Ben Kennedy (from S.A). Assuming our pick is around 10 would it be 'overs' for him (deferring to knowledgeable draft watchers). Yes he's s on the small side and might lack the ceiling of some other draftees but it didn’t turn out too badly the last time we drafted a certain man-child from WA with small arms and no improvement.

These two are probably my favourites from the mids who should be available around our pick (I reserve the right to change my mind every week). Both can have an impact inside or out, great around goal and Mayes has plenty of class whilst Kennedy has elite speed.

I like Kennedy, and normally wouldn't be put off by his height, but when our best 22 in a couple of years should feature:

Green, Zorko and Bartlett below 180cm and
Beams, Banfield, Golby, Rocky, Harwood, Raines and Rich @ 183

...I start to worry about drafting another midget midfielder. That'd be half our team under 6ft!

Granted, he could well 'push out' one of those guys, but when there are taller options available...hrmm...

If we end up with a pick 10 or so, the more reason we should trade pick 10 for Tippurt or Beams or Hogan and we will still get decent talent with our 2nd round pick and pick 29.

All Australian squad named:

Only one 2012-eligible player from WA. About right, based on champs performances.

Jack Billings was eye-catching for VM - he is underaged, right?

Yeah. Billings is already being touted as a possible #1 next year.

Scharenberg's another one I got excited about for next year.

I'm currently struggling to get excited about players who'll likely be available at our first pick this year.

Well done to Boston from QLD. Hopefully gets himself on a list.

From the sounds of it, we will most likely be forced to go best available with our first pick. Is there any sense in trading down for multiple picks later on?

I dunno. Even though I agree with your thoughts re: the list compatability of Wines, he's still a bloody good footballer in the making. I don't think we're so flush for inside mid talent that we couldn't do with another one. I'd happily take Garlett if he's cleared by the recruiters in terms of his off-field stuff. Taking Shaw is fine with me. Menzel only needs a positive fitness assessment.

An interesting 'out there' suggestion. Will see how the ladder plays out, but a club like Melbourne has a few picks with which to play and probably a more pressing need for marginally improved picks.

What we need is for the Vic boys to go to the head of the class based on good TAC games and a few of the SA and WA kids to fall. I am still hoping for Mayes or Garlett. I think both would add a bit more class and goal kicking ability to our team. People would not have got to see Mayes up forward this year but he made AA last year as a forward. He is exceptionally smart up there and got separation with ease. Not making the AA might also be a bit of a blessing.
