2012 Draft Discussion

Might have already been discussed, sorry of it has, but if we chase and secure Tippett, presumably we won't have a dirt round pick to trade?

Depends if the clause exists.

All i know is that there as some quite handy players at pick 8 and if we use it to get Tippet I'll absolutely spew, Beams however! Garlett, o'rourke, wines and Kennedy or possibly Hogan. I'm curious, does anyone think Hrovat, Simpson could be around our compo pick? Feel certain to get a KPP with our Secound round pick.

Horvat I think will almost certainly be available. Simpson I would expect to almost certainly be gone.

No way in hell GC trade their number 1 this year for Martin. He is a nice talent but personally I would certainly take Whitfield ahead of him and probably Toumpas as well. No sense waiting a year and taking the development risk when you can get a comparable talent this year.

Quigley any chance Oliver Wines could be taken at our first pick and Tom Lee at our second pick? If Kennedy is available at our second pick we should take him.

Wines should go around our selection so there is a fair chance he will be available if we want him.

Lee was overlooked when in similar form last year. I would be surprised if he went as high as the second round. Someone might look at him from the third round on I think.

If Kennedy is there at our second pick we should waste about 0.5 of a second before taking him and then down and give thanks. Personally I think there is zero chance of him being there at our second pick.

Presumably we would have been in a better position draft pick wise to nab him last year though. So is that is the case that would seem to point toward it existing.

From memory the rumours suggested the clause came into effect at the end of the contract.

A question for Quigley please.

What do you know of Matthew Crouch? Is he worth Brisbane looking at in the mini draft? He doesn't seem to attract much attention there. How does he compare to the inside mids in this year's draft? Would a second round pick be enough for him?

Sorry more than one question here!!

There are only 2 minidraft picks up for grabs this year. GWS had four to trade all up and traded two of them last year.

It's pretty much expected that Jack Martin and Jesse Hogan are the two best prospects in this years minidraft and they will be snapped up with offers much higher than second round picks.

If we are wanting a mini draft pick, we have to deal with crazy Gubby. I wonder how he feels about the lions, lions didn't hide the fact that the list/salary cap was left in a mess and would take years to fix.

TBD is quite correct in that GWS only have two picks left and so it would be a decision about who the teams who won the bidding process decided to take.

Crouch is an option and I was very impressed at times with him during the Champs. He was not always consistent but there were times when he was the best midfielder on the field and dragged Country along with him. His brother was probably more consistent last year but played an easier position at the back where he had time and space to work in. I think Crouch is an excellent in and under prospect but I would not take him ahead of Martin or Hogan.

Personally I think we should be getting a gift next year in Conway who is a pretty similar player and could end up being just as good. I am not sure I would be doubling up.

Any chance of drafting Mason Shaw if we fail to get Tippurt. His been averaging just over 4 goals per match, out of 7 matches in the WAFL. Checkout his stats via this link: http://www.wafl.com.au/players/view/3931

Shaw is an interesting one. Had massive wraps on him early in the year until Mitch Brown broke his jaw but his Colts record stands for itself.

Didn't have a good u18 champs this year but many good AFL players didn't have great performances at the champs (Cotchin comes to mind).

Pick 8 might be seen as slightly overs but I wouldn't be stunned if we took him, nor would I be disappointed as I would have faith that Graeme Hadley (now our WA scout) would have had a real good look at him. I reckon Freo would be red hot on him if we don't take him.

I still like a lot of those midfield prospects in the frame for pick 8 though like Kennedy, Mayes and Garlett. Very torn.

I'm still quite sceptical about Shaw. Seems to be more to it, almost as if he's been involved with Freo and is deliberately not performing to his best at times so they can get him cheap. I'm not coming across as some crazy conspiracy theorist, am I?

Sounds perfectly rational to me, PK

I couldn't figure out where to throw this opinion, and I am not that big on the drafting aspects so I could learn a thing or two here.

Realistically these players will needed to be replaced in the next 1-3 season:

Players who haven't got long left

Brown: Hitting that age now.
Black: Also that Age

Those who may survive a bit longer then 1-3 seasons

Ash McGrath: His knee injury isn't looking that good, however he may have a little bit longer then Brown and Black.
Hudson: Is a pretty high age for an AFL footballer, yet his form says otherwise, could still go on next year.
Maguire: Also one of those higher age footballers, if we make a finals run in the next two years or so he should be around to help us out
Drummond: Drummond is older then he actually seems, will be interesting to see how fast his body begins to slow down, even more so then it already has due to his injuries.

So realistically there is 6 A-graders that will need to be replaced in the coming years, this draft it would be a good idea to find replacements for Brown, Black, Hudson and McGrath, as realistically a bad injury could end their careers from here. Drummond is already at the bad injury point where it will be hard to keep him fit, however our backline is relatively stable atm, McKeever is at hand for when we need him, and doesn't match up too bad.

Beams could be a likely replacement for Black, and that's how it seems it's happening.
Lisle is likely to replace Brown, however he is another mature aged player, not a young player we can nab and get a mammoth amount of games into. Hudson, well he is being played week by week, assessing it as it happens. McGrath will be hard to find a player who can do what he does, his amazing off that half back flank.

What to look for:
Midfielder to keep the depth good.
Young Forward recruit.
A running half-back flanker.

I look forward to seeing what draft prospects fellow Lions supporters are keeping an eye on.

Sam Docherty is the obvious replacement for Drummond. Lisle replaces Brown. Justin Clarke/Nial Mckeever replaces Maguire. Longer can replace Hudson. The only player who is hard to replace is McGrath as he can go forward and back. Golby/Harwood can take McGraths position in the back not sure who could crumb though if Green becomes a midfielder.

I think our depth in most positions is quite good. Our midfield is developing we just need to add pace. I think we have the clearance players they are just taking a little while to develop. What we really need is an Elite CHB or CHF to bring through the ranks. I think overall the cherry on top is what we are after now.

Our depth is being tested right now, the issue is what if Brown and Black do retire at the end of this year or next year? We will be shot. We need more players thrown into that depth 'position'.
