He wouldn't play second ruck at 193cm, no matter how huge his leap is.

As for the Mature Age players, the younger high end prospects have more upside, but they could be a late option though they probably won't be the forward we are after. I don't rate Haretuku very highly, he is a good VFL player but will struggle at the AFL imo, Clouston has improved this year, but not by much he was always dominating the NEAFL even at the lions. Tom Lee is worth a shot but I think that GWS will either pick him up or trade him for a second round pick.

Do GWS have access to guys like Lee this year? I thought that expired last year.

On O'Brien I think he is a 15-30 pick I think. I had concerns about his build but an SA based scout assures me he will fill out fine and that he has a "nice set of shoulders on him".

With Shaw I think it is all mental. If you can get him switched on he has all the tools to be a dominant FF in the AFL. The problem for me is that most of the time he looks like he doesn't give a crap and is not prepared to work. If he is prepared to work the skys the limit. If he is not he will be out of the AFL in 3 years.

Sounds exactly like the summary of Fev in his draft year.

Or a little bit like a forward already on our list.

Sadly, very true.

If we come out of this off-season with none of Tippett, Hogan, Toumpas or Shaw, I won't know what to do with myself. I'll be crushed.

Prepare to be crushed PK, I think that's the way it will play out unfortunately.

GC sounds like the club Tippett wants, Demons and Dogs really need a quality key forward (Hogan) and based on what has been said on the drafts board doesn't sound like Toumpas will last till our pick and Shaw at 8 would be too early.

You're probably right. Oh well, that gives me a task for the night. Off to the draft board to find a few new favourites!

IF T Menzel tests well Would the lions use there pick 8 on him, he looks like he COULD be a gun.

Jackson mcRae This is the one I would be really keen on seeing at the lions, you can never have to many GOOD users of the ball. and he looks to be a really good ball user.
Would he be available with our compo pick ???

As promising as Menzel is - some saying top 2 on talent alone - I can't see us taking a risk on him with pick 8. Unfortunately I think we are in a position where we have to play it relatively safe.

Jackson Macrae would have to be around the mark but pick 8 would be a high price to play for predominantly a HFF or a HBF who dosen't really defend. From the limited times I've seen him at Carey, he shows no respect whatsoever to his opponent when defending and I'm not as sold on his foot skills as some. Generally they are quite sound but he has a tendancy to float the ball at times and turn it over in damaging positions. This dosen't get punished greatly at school level but AFL is a different story. Super talent though and is probably entitled to have his fair share of clangers when he's having 40 kicks a game. No chance of him being available at our compo pick.

Menzel is a more talented version of his brother. History of knee problems and that will see him drop. Not out of the question that he could be there at our compo pick or even lower the risk is that high.

Macrae is a younger version of Kade Simpson. Nice to have and can get a stack of it but not in the elite category. He goes between 10 and 20 for me.

These (except Tippett of course) are just names to me. I just want another Daniel Bradshaw. Is that too much to ask for ???

What you want someone who will threaten to go home during every contract negotiation and then spit the dummy once his body give up the ghost?

(Sorry, I'm still bitter...)

Ahh, these newbies Belgo They need educating.;)

Trying to think of a comparison for Shaw this morning and I came up with a good one I thought - Llane Spaanderman. Huge guy, very talented, attitude not great and he ended up falling unexpectedly to us in the draft.

Geez!

Quigs, you state that with considerable negative inflection. I will take Mason Shaw with pick 8 in a heartbeat. What people fail to remember is that Llane was a fine footballer. Llane had everything that a big man needed to succeed. It was his outside football lifestyle that hindered him in making an AFL career. Mason to my understanding is nothing like Llane in personality or lifestyle.

I subsequently gave a mention to Llane's extracurriculars but apart from that I think the comparison is very apt.

Both are a similar size and have / had all the tools necessary to be a dominant big man. You say Shaw is nothing like Llane personality wise but to me I think onfield they seem pretty similar. When challenged both can look like they don't give a crap or are willing to work hard enough.

With Shaw you would hope that it is just a function of not really needing to at junior level and when he gets into AFL company he will lift. The danger though is like Spaanderman he just never quite gets it and is willing to work hard for it.

Sometimes talented guys need the challenge of higher level footy. I reckon there is something to be said for that in Darling's performances in his draft year. Any chance Shaw is that type of cat?

You probably need to take Llane's extracurriculars out of the equation.
interesting - i didn't know this - can you state what they were?

I think it's worth noting that, off field issues aside, the ruck/forward player was out of vogue in Spanders' time. The in-betweeners (half a ruckman + half a forward) equated to a value of half of nothing, because they weren't good enough to be either. These days these types of players are massively in vogue.

Absolutely he could be which is the camp that irel is in I think. Rich was this type of player as well just seeming to cruise through his last year under 18.
