2012 Draft Discussion

That's of less interest to me. Either way we are one spot better off in the draft.

I think there's some argument that taking Viney at #3 might make Melbourne less keen to trade #4 for a mini-draft pick. If that is the case, we're probably left with the highest draft pick among those that are in the mix for the MD pick 2.

If Hogan was eligible in this draft and if Daniher wasn't a father/son... where would we expect them to go?

Similar to Browndog's question, I'd also be curious as to how Hogan compares to other players, eg. Jonathan Patton and Oliver Wines.

In the afl.com.au article it said we were one of only 7 or 8 to have interviewed him. Apparently he's more of a third tall. Could possibly be an upgrade on Cornelius.
Link please?

The Lions are highly interested in Laine Wilkins who has performed very well thus far at the combine. They'd be looking at him very closely for their second round pick.
He should be there at pick 49 IMO whats your source?

Yep, I'm getting a bit excited that this might eventuate. But is there a big jump in value from Ollie Wines to Jesse Hogan? How much is that exchange worth?

Isn't it the other way around? First, on Monday Melbourne announce their decision on taking Viney as a father/son selection and then, step 2, GC bid for him with pick 2 and Melb have to match the bid with their pick 3. So GC's "interest" in Viney is just that, but not official.

Interestingly Hogan measured at 97.4kgs at draft camp. Wonder how tall he measured? Story in May had him listed at 193 and 91. Either he's massively bulked up or he's gotten taller this year, probably a combo of both. Either way he's a sizeable guy, shouldn't have too many troubles competing up forward with the big guys almost straight away in 2014, especially after a full season in training and the weights/pilates rooms.

Patton is listed at the giants as 197 and 102kg's so he's around the mark size wise, although you'd like him to have measured at least 195 cm at draft camp this year. Probably has a bit more growing to do too this year. Combine that with his 14.2 beep test and its an impressive package physically.

Probably an obvious question and has already been answered but is it confirmed that the Bulldogs are going to select Martin if they secure that 1st mini-draft pick? Has anybody from the Dogs said that that is who they want? I really hope that is the case because I really want Hogan. Either way if we do get that mini draft pick 2 we are in a win win situation. We either get Martin or Hogan. A gun midfielder or a gun KPF.

Not that it counts for much but I'd take Hogan in a heartbeat with 8 and steak knives well before Wines. Elite tank (now proven), great hands, good kick, great reader of the flight, fast enough and big enough to make a Darling-esque impact in his first year. Yes please!

A couple more cm and he'd be poifect!

In case it hasn't been posted yet, some highlights of Hogan here (from about 5:40).

*look away now if you are offended by the term 'man-child'.

I'm not a draft expert but it is the fact that Hogan is a key forward that tips the scales for me....especially when he outperformed every other key forward in this year's champs (Daniher aside) and is testing well at the Combine. I've leaned towards taking Shaw with pick 8 but Hogan seems to me to be a significantly more complete footballer than Shaw.

I found this interesting considering the Bulldogs are in such dire need of key forwards. Martin must be seriously talented.

I'd put Daniher at top 2, probably #1 because great talls > great mids. Hogan probably top 4 after Daniher/Whitfield. IMO of course.

Reading that article it highlights a smack of arrogance from GWS stating that it would take two front end first round picks to get the mini draft pick 1. That is way over. Burgoyne was two picks at 9 and 16 and he was and is a quality player. Martin is just a kid. I'm all for going for Hogan but not for selling the farm and want him quite bad - Pick 8 and player. It should be relative.

It's basic haggling. GWS isn't going to come out and say "Hey, give us **** all". They're going to start with their highest request and negotiations will bring that down. When we lost Clark, we started with a position of two first round picks IIRC.

If we did get Hogan I would insist on him getting rid of the bum fluff.

This photo reminds a bit of:

Chili: Martin, look at me.
Martin: I'm looking at you.
Chili: No, I want you to look at me the way I'm looking at you. Put it in your eyes, 'You're mine, arseh*le,' without saying it.
Martin: Like this?
Chili: What you're telling me, you're tired? You wanna go to bed?
Martin: Wait. How about this?
Chili: Now you're squinting like you need glasses. Look at me. I'm thinking, You're mine. I ****in' own you. What I'm not doing is feeling anything about it one way or the other. You understand? You're not a person to me, you're a name in my collection book, a guy owes me money, that's all.
Martin: How about this?
Chili: That's not bad.
Martin: That's what I think of you, arseh*le. Nothing.
Chili: I believe it.

Don't know him at all but looks like he means business which a few of our existing young talls could do with a bit of.

I could see the club putting pick 8 up for a mini pick, might be enough, might not be, depends on what other clubs are doing. End of the day, GWS can't use the picks themselves. If the club rates either Martin or Hogan as better talent than pick 8, it's a worthy spend. Especially when you consider that next year, depending how we go, we might not have a top 10 pick. Could be the last chance to grab a top 3 type player.

If not, i'm sure we will have our targets at pick 8.

I reckon they need a mature key forward. Got more than enough young ones (even if they're the only ones who believe that they'll succeed in that position).

Super impressive for a big man.

Yeah, I'm amazed. He's not just tall big, but heavily built big. By comparison Rockliff ran 12.50 and after his famous Ray Giles fitness regime improved to 10.40.

When Sam Michael was drafted Kerr's comment on him was:

“We pre-selected Sam Michael because you don’t find too many 200cm players who can run 3km in 10 and half minutes.”

The two could make a formidable duo.

Must. Not. Get. Hopes. Up.
