2012 Draft Discussion

Another former Lions player to come in calculations, I was impressed with his year but I would pass. I would much rather try and pick someone like Smith or Rodda up in the draft.

Fair point. Our need for a mature KPD isn't as great as at the other end of the field, but thought it was worth a mention.

To be honest, with Tippett now ruled out and us needing a ready to go (or at least nearly ready to go) key forward by 2014 at the latest, I'm thinking the signs are starting to point towards Clouston.

Good chance the Inspector will be back IMO

I think we will be going hard for Hogan, I think this trade has been mentioned a few time would likely get it done as it fits GWS's needs - Pick 8 and Maguire for Mini Draft #2. I think that's more the reasonable. If Not then I would agree we will have a good hard look at Clouston.

Rookie for both depending on who we elevate.

McKeever vs Tippett is an interesting one. You'd think given Tippett's SANFL form he might be a chance.

I don't think it's a Clouston or Hogan scenario. What we need as soon as Brown leaves is a mature key forward who can take his spot. Lisle might do it, but I'm not sure he's shown enough to be confident yet. Clouston is 25, so would fit perfectly - just as Tippett would've. Then Hogan slots in as the developing tall forward, as he probably wouldn't be ready to play as the main forward until 21/22 at the earliest.

With the draft being held on the GC again this year, i'm hoping the club does something to last time, and holds a little function for members. It was really great to hear a little bit from our recruiters about who we picked up and why, as well as meeting 1 or 2 of the recruits on the night.
Yes it was a great evening and I also would like a repeat:thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Check out Manson's Shaw Stats (WAFL) and Jesse Hogans.

http://www.wafl.com.au/players/view/3931 (Manson Shaw). http://www.wafl.com.au/players/view/4121 (Jesse Hogan).

Mason Shaw has kick 40 goals in 10 games in 2012 for the colts, including five goals in the grand final.

Manson Shaw is a full forward who scores 4 or 5 goals with 10 touches. Hogan is a centre half forward who works up the ground and always gets 20 touches. Has good workrate and made All Australian as a defender.

What type of forward do we need?

I prefer Hogan. Feel he will develop into the next Brown.

Hogan was in the best every game in the championships! Yet he kicked a putrid 5 goals 8 in total. Seems like he played a definite CHF role.

Not sure if it's been asked before, but is there a possibility of us nabbing Marco Paparone?

He caught my eye a few times, looks to have the talent
He should be there at pick 30, but I would think their would be better talent available. Brant Colledge is a simliar type player and would be there at pick 49 so if we are in the market Paporone is a better player, but wont be there at pick 49 we go for Colledge.

Spencer White has given some good results at the combine. Would've been Vic Metro but had a slow start to the year and was behind 3 very good players but has finished the season off strongly. Chris25 rates him and he should be there with our third round pick.

Im never big on project players but this year I hope we get two project players in Mason Wood and Jake Calvert.
Thoughts on these two?

I'm all for tanking next season to get James Aish. BOG to 3/4 as a 16 year old in the SANFL GF.

It will be tough to finish 18th next season though. A full season and Aish could win the Magarey as a 17 year old.

Wood has a huge tank and is highly skilled for his size, but from speaking to people whom I trust their judgement, there are question marks against his pyhsicality and willingness to compete at times and the same goes for McBean and White. Haven't heard much about Calvert apart from what locals say about him.

If we got mini-draft pick number 2 and Hogan was taken with the first pick I am thinking I would take Matt Crouch over Martin.

Would you? I would take Martin easily over Matt Crouch, there is more risk associated with Martin but his talent and what he has produced this year is way ahead of Crouch. Martin has a pretty complete game imo and if he could put on more size over the year then he would be better equipped to start in 2014.

GC have confirmed they're taking Martin.

Crouch I think will be the best inside mid of next year's crop and he was the best inside mid on the field in a couple of the Country games I saw this year. He was concentrating on cricket until a year or two ago and I think there is quite a bit of upside. There is also nowhere near the downside that Martin offers.

I am very dubious about Martin's father and his abilityto settle and get the most out of his talent. He has a slight build and that is a concern. To me he could be another Harley Bennell or just as easily a cross between Richard Tambling and Cale Morton.

Crouch's inside game would fit our needs better I think and he and Conway coming in together could really turn around our clearance problem.
