I believe there is zero chance we will select Mason Shaw at pick 8. The club always has a best avaiable approach for our first pick and it is therefore very likely we will pick up a mid. I think we can all be very happy to know that we will probably end up with one of Mayes, Wines, O'Rourke, Garlett or Macrae. If the selections went as follows

1. Whitfield
2. Toumpas
3. Grundy
4. Mayes
5. Plowman
6. Stringer

Port would either select Wines, O'Rourke or Mcrae. Let's say Port selects O'Rourke, who do you guys think we wil pick out of Mcrae and Wines? The outside midfielder or the inside midfielder? I personally think quality outside players are harder to find then quality inside players so I would go with Mcrae. Outside players generally take longer to develop as well so we can always pick up an inside midfielder in a few years time who could slot straight into the team and by then the outside player we select in this draft will be ready. It will be interesting to see which way the club goes.

Personally, with picks 8, 23 and 30, I'd be over the moon with any two killer mids of:

Wines
McCrae
Garlett
Hrovat
Simpson
Vlastuin
Lonergan

And one KPP/FWD of:
Jaksch
Membrey
Stringer
Shaw
Towers
Stewart
O'Brien

I just feel there are better quality midfielders available at our picks that seem like quality and safer prospects than the KPF's; those of which whom will be available to us by our picks all have question marks over them to some extent.

Drafting is always inherently risky, but we have a good list on our hands and I'd rather we keep playing it smart and minimize drafting risk as best as we can, UNLESS we have the picks or freedom to take a punt and not losing or missing out on anything if it fails.

If it comes to pick 7 and Mayes, Wines, O'rourke, Macrae, Garlett are all still available Port Adelaide will go for the local lad in Mayes.
Hopefully this is what the top 8 picks will look like:

If this is what will occur on Draft Day we have a lot of good talent at pick.
Wines and Garlett should be our predominant targets at pick 8 with Mason Shaw as a smokey.
It is imperative that we do all we can over the next few weeks to secure another pick in the top 25.
At pick 8 we could also take a major risk in taking Lachlan Plowman (if available) and try turn him into a forward IMO this in the long run could pay dividends as he is a super talent and if we cant convert him into a forward we would a very capable backman.

yeah we will get a very good talent at pick 8 which is why I have always thought we should keep it. Port will definately lock mayes in if he slides as they really need to build a loyal and talented list. It will be some years before they get back up the table and the last thing they need is a young interstated losing interest in the club after week in week out floggings due to the forever lure of returning home

Lonergan is a ball magnet he tackles well and is very good at clearances. In Harwoods under 18 year he had all these attributes bar the ability to be a prominent ball magnet

Don't think we will draft an inside Mid, this year with Moloney, Black, and Redden, at the club looking at outside mids would say we would look at Macrea, Garlett, and O'Rouke,. Or could still draft a player that's not ranked at our first round pick, and draft for need's in drafting Shaw, Jaksch, or Plowman, if avilable.

Harwood averaged 21 disposals a game during the under 18 championships. How much more magnetised is Lonergan?

Disposal counts of 15, 15 and 19. Missed the first two games after a knee injury back in the preseason. Don't know what his Tassie stats were.

From the combine results Lonergan would seem to be more athletic and have better skills. Although they seem to prepare better for the combine than they used to.

IIRC in 2011 he ave. 25 disposals in the champs. This year he played with an injury

Black and Moloney have a combined age of 60.

Lonergan is a much better inside mid than Harwood ever was. I was a bit skeptical about placing him high up the draft order but I think he will probably go between picks 20 - 30 imo. He has a fair bit of talent, and his athletic ability surprised me a little, but he is very nippy and hard to tackle. His inside work is very good, he has clean hands, good disposal skills and makes good decisions. I think he is one of the better inside players available in the second round, but has the ability to develop an all round game.

There is no doubt we will be looking for another mid, and there shoudl be some decent inside options at pick 8. We got Moloney which has bought us some time, we still need to draft 1 though. A player like Wines would be ideal i think.

Plowman sounds exactly like the type of player that Kerr loves, tall with versatility including midfield potential. Would love for us to get home. Any one else got fingers crossed that he'll slide to us?

In calculations I pretty much discount Black as he will realistically only go around one more year, and I think will be managed through that year also. Moloney will take Black's place at the end of next year and at the end of the following year will be 30 and offered yearly contracts.
I think Lonergan offers a long term inside mid prospect, and the combination of endurance and goal kicking should slot him into the preffered inside mid category. I see the Harwood (I rate him also) conection, however I think the endurance and goal kicking set Lonergan apart. Harwood for me has proven that he can contribute elsewhere, Lonergan provides insurance if he does not come on as an inside mid option. I also think Lonergan may have the ability to contribute outside.
The chance to grab him at 20 should not be discounted lightly, as with all scenarios it is dependent on what we do with other selections.

In terms of Qlders, outside of the high profile group of Boston, Cameron and Bourke - a few others who might be a chance for rookie spots. What are the rules for Qld rookies this year?- alternate selections with Gold Coast or based on academy areas (or is this only from next year?).

Wallin interesting one - overage this yr in state 18's as injured last yr and did well there and in NEAFL but didn't get invited to state screening. Johnson also 19 - played forward and back in state 18's and at Morningside. He's over 190 cm - you didn't mean Wyld as somewhat shorter (188) KPD - played all 5 state games and several NEAFL games deep defence and did go to state screening. Wardle also 188 and went to state screening - played for Qld in defence,forward and in ruck, but NEAFL for Labrador mainly in defence.

Wyld is a very good shutdown player and will do the job down the backline for any task, but can he do it to a big name forward at a higher lever? I think the height will keep him out of a KPD and the smaller forwards may be to quick?.
I watched Wallin a few times this year he is a very handy lightning back flank/pocket or maybe a wing position player. he also has recorded vertical jumps of 95+, Oddly enough they played him in a forward pocket through the national carnival. just needs to compose himself a bit more and a touch up on skills. A rookie option is possible.
Johnson is more of KPD or KPF, A solid boy who seems to play defence and forward if thrown into it, did some good things through the national carnival too.

Polec and Longer will be good players, but if Kerr drafted on the basis of best avaliable we would of have Toby Greene and Dyson Heppell at our club. I know last year we wanted Greene at pick 8 but we had no ruckmen on out list to backup Luenberger so we drafted Longer instead of Toby Greene with our first pick.

Longer was a "best available" selection as well. There no evidence to suggest the club thought otherwise.

We didn’t think that Billy Longer - who we ranked in our Top 5 - would be available, but if he was, we as a Club agreed we would take him. Our hopes of securing Billy came to fruition when GWS took Nick Haynes, who we also rated highly at Pick No.7.

Billy was a player we had followed all year, but had for the most part we thought he would be out of our reach. In two of the U18 National Championship games, our team rated his game a 5/5, so we were understandably surprised and delighted to secure him.

Polec and Heppell were line ball according to Kerr. In that case, they felt that Polec fit the needs better and that pushed him ahead. Still fair enough to say that he was a "best available" pick too.

"It was a real toss up between Dyson and Jared," Kerr told afl.com.au.

"When we had a hard look at our list and looked at what we needed the most, Jared was probably the best fit of the group in terms of the players that were going to be available.

"Dyson is a terrific player and will have a fantastic career. We just thought from a pure list management perspective that Jared fitted our needs just a little better.

We don't exactly know that though, for all we know, Kerr could've rated Polec/Longer ahead of Heppell/Greene.
