2012 Draft Discussion

Happy to see someone lay their thoughts out on the table and what players they think would or should be taken.

From that video of Garlett, he's pretty quick with good run and carry, and has a good footy brain and I was quite happy with his decision making, but even in his highlights package, his kick let him down quite a few times - ball dropped short a couple of times, or a few times he's kicked to contests in ways that were favourable for the opposition... Not a bad little player, and some good run and carry, but especially when you combine that with a predilection for off-field issues, I'm not bandwagoning it.

Just my opinion from a 3 minute highlight video.

Apart from that goal those Garlett highlights are very underwhelming. Pick 8 for me would be a big stretch.

God no. Garlett'd would be something in the 30s, surely.

That's what I was thinking. Looked like he had good speed, average to below-average skills and didn't win any contested footy or take any marks.

I'm hoping Wines slips to pick 8.
Wouldn't mind that. Heck - Wines, O'Rourke, Stringer... Maybe Macrae... I'm going off Mayes recently, but one of the first 4... My preference:
Pick 8 - O'Rourke or Stringer
Pick 23 - Vlastuin
Pick 30 - O'Brien
Pick 49 - Rodda

I think of that lot, Vlastuin is the least likely to slip to there (some have him in top 10, but he is divisive). There are quite a few intriguing prospects there though, so i'd be happy with a number of others (eg. Ben Kennedy, Jesse Lonergan (though i think he'll be a draft bolter), or Josh Simpson). These picks, though, I think would set us in stead for a while. Get a classy mid at 8, and I'd go best available at pick 23 as well (excl rebounding defender), before looking at underrated KPPs at the other two. A good promising KPF in O'Brien, and a decent KPD option at Rodda at 49 (though he may go before this point).

I would only change Vlaustin for anothe KPD , Clurey or Smith. Besides that if it went that way Xmas would have come early (Wines at 8 and you can throw New Years in as well.) Throw in a Calvert for rookie as well

I have been a BIG fan of Oliver Wines and have always wanted him at pick 8 but I really want Macrae now he fills a need and is a very good player if not better that Wines

If we're talking "highlights" videos, i thought josh simpson's was far more impressive.

I've got to agree.

Dayle Gartlett isn't very good IMO. He's very JON like, and we all know how that turned out. The comparisons to Cyril and Bennell are way off. I reckon he's going to be the slider of the draft.

Pick him at 23 or 30. He would justify such a pick but not a top 10. He will surely contribute to an AFL side one day, although not as an out-and-out star.

Normally a youtube clip leads to a sudden burst of over-rating. This seems to have had the opposite effect. Maybe it needed some music because it was certainly a little underwhelming.

In response to cotter's question, I have seen a total of three minutes and 22 seconds of footage.

O'Rourke

Sheridan has helped O'Rourke prepare for the possibility he will shift interstate (a good chance with Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions looming), but really, he's just waiting. And doing a little bit of work in between.

Hrmm...maybe I need to go back and have another look at the SA game...

My only problem with Garlett is that he can go missing at times, but not often enough to raise major concerns. Garlett can also worry me with his effiency at times. Both these things can be fixed in an AFL environment IMO.

I am surprised people on here are questioning Garlett's kicking efficiency and I am guessing they are basing this solely on that small highlights clip. Dayle Garlett is a very accurate kick on both sides of his feet and he really only needs 15-20 disposals per game to really impact it because he is quite a damaging player.

I haven't seen the video. I think that it's worrying when a player get 50% disposal efficiency at times, but like I said this can be fixed in an AFL environment. I also know that if we get Garlett your going to run around screaming "We got Garlett" ;)

I would have thought disposal deficiencies are the hardest thing to fix.
