Retzlaff was the last genuine KPP we have taken in the national draft. It's hard to see why we haven't drafted more but I really hope we draft 1 or 2 in this years draft.

Turns my mind to what player types I would like, I reckon I'd be keen for one of two combinations:

1. 2 genuine KPPs and an onballer

2. 2 onballers who are different types (eg one inside and one outside), and a genuine KPP

No interest in rucks, back flankers or small forwards with no midfield potential.

If you look back on the last 3 drafts after the first round apart from Sam Reid, Darling and maybe Tom McDonald (Melb.) there haven't been many KPPs that have shown a lot and during that time we've seen a lot of recycled KPPs being drafted/traded.

During that time we've had a pretty good strikerate with our draft picks by avoiding KPPs.

Only two days ago we were in the thick of the bidding frenzy to sell piece of our farm to get a player like Tippett. Yet there is a player in this draft that would very likely be available at 8 that not only fills our need but IMO is best available at that stage. MASON SHAW, MASON SHAW, MASON SHAW. Gees I hate yelling. How much more KPP do you need? :D

Lol - I watched the video before reading the comment and saw that guy and thought "gee, at AFL level, he'd have been crushed by now... indecisive much..." which is odd, because other stuff of Macrae's i've liked...

And Irel - Mason Shaw is no where near best available at 8. He's not even as good as Jaksch. I value him at 15-20, would rather see us get him at 24, when he'll quite possibly still be available. 8 is HUGE overs imo.

I'm no draft expert, but i could see Shaw slipping to our 2nd pick. Being in the 20's is certainly possible, and i would think at 24 we would take him. Wonder who we are looking at with pick 8. I would think we would want an inside type mid. Mayes sounds like he will probably be there at 8, and looks pretty good, but not sure if he is the type we are after. Lots to ponder between now and then.

I'm now starting to worry about us picking up Tippet with our pick 8. I still can't believe that he wasn't allowed to be traded during the trade period. I know he is a good player, but he eat into our salary cap massively and would have a lot of baggage being forced to play for us via the natioNal draft. would love to us pick up Stringer with no. 8.
I reckon he's ready to go.

I also can't see shaw being left much past pick 15-20. If you had pick 19 who better would be left than Mason Shaw?

Pick 8 for shaw otherwise we'll miss him. Having said that I would rather Stringer at 8

Problem is that sometimes a quality player doesn't fit readily into a specific category but is too good to pass up. I suspect Jake Stringer might be just such a player. Has played mainly forward but at 191 cm probably won't be a KPF at AFL level, more a second or third tall, but already has the body to be an impact player. And doesn't seem to be a one trick pony; has good pace and athleticism as well as a fair bit of grunt.

Considering Wines and MacRae will be gone by #8, and Mayes doesn't really suit our needs, I'd be over the moon with Jaksch - as he's a jet and markedly better than the other KPFs available at that pick (and wouldn't be paying overs at 8).

I'm a little worried about Stringer and his leg. With our spread of picks, I'd rather we play it safe. If we had another pick deeper in the teens, then he'd be worth a look, but it'd be risky/paying potential overs at 8 and he probably won't be around by 24. It also seems that some other quite polished inside and outside mids will be available that are "safer" choices and address current needs perhaps better.

#24 and #33 would be great if we nabbed both an elite pacy outside mid (Garlett or Simpson) and a ready-to-go inside ball magnet like Vlastuin or Lonergan (perhaps even Hrovat - tho maybe he'd be paying overs at #24, but perhaps not at #33).

Useful consolation choices in Membrey, Towers, Shaw or even a KPD (Tanner Smith etc) if those first choices weren't available.

Every year I seem to get on a bandwagon early and the early consensus is they'll be available at our pick, but they end up rising out of our reach. Thinking Dom Tyson last year, and probably Ollie Wines this year.

On what I've seen of Mayes, I think he does suit our needs. He reminds me of a Karnezis type that's been exposed and developed in the midfield earlier. Both are strong lead-up forwards with a nice mark, and pretty good skills (Mayes is one of the best kicks in the draft). What Mayes has that Karnezis doesn't is pace as Mayes is quite quick. Like Karnezis needs more time to develop in the midfield, but looks like he can get there.

I think players like Mayes and Karnezis, who are good forwards in their own right and therefore are a threat when down there are going to be important heading into the future. Mainly because the AFL will most likely bring in a cap on interchanges, and being able to rest a Karnezis/Rockliff/Mayes up forward where they are a legitimate threat is a great tool to have.

Also I know it's early but it's good to see Knightmare ranking list of next year's prospects and seeing Conway (#34), Tickner (#42) and Gribble (#43) on there. We could get some real bargains next year if those three all rate as second rounders come this time next year.

I do like the style that Mayes plays, that real quality smart lead up forward. He is a good size, and might end up toping out around 189-190cm. Has a great tank and elite kicking. If you can get him into the midfield, he would be an extremely dangerous mid who can go and rest forward. With an interchange cap or 2nd sub likely to come into the game, midfielders that can play other positions and rest on field will be worth their weight in gold. You could just about play Mayes form the goal square to really shake things up.

I'm still leaning towards a genuine inside roving midfielder at pick 8 though.

Was thinking that as well. We may be able to get them with our 3rd 4th and 5th rounders (assuming no-one higher in the pecking order bids a 2nd rounder) and possibly either consolidate the first two picks for a better pick or use one to trade. Starting to see where the academy can be turned into a real advantage - at least until Eddie steps in.

Would one assume that the likes of Conway and Tickner would impact on the thoughts of the type of player/s that we would draft this year.

What are peoples thoughts on Will Hams? He is as tough as nails. He plays like Mitchell, but is a little more inside than Mitchell.

People are going to disagree, but we should take Shaw at pick 8. With that we can take our midfielder at pick 24 in Hrovat and Towers at 33. This will let us worry less about LIFE AFTER BIG BROWNY. If Hrovat isn't there at pick 24 which could become 23 again if Adelaide are excluded from the draft we can take Nick Graham or Nathan Wright Borg those players are very good midfielders. I for one would love Towers at pick 24 or 33 (23 or 32 depends on Adelaide) Will Hams at 91 would also be good.
