2012 Draft Discussion

I will be going to Blacktown next weekend to watch:

Qld v WA
NSW v Vic Country

and then the following weekend to Princess Park to watch:

Vic Country v Qld
Vic Metro v Tas

Good chance to get a look at some of our academy players. Also Mason Shaw from WA is a guy I will be watching. I think he will be right on the cards for us if we don't win a heap more games. It's a shame I won't get a chance to see SA live this year. There are quite a few guys who I really like from that team. Mayes in particular is someone who I think could be a champion player.

For those interested it is also worth noting that the last two rounds of the Div 1 games will be telecast this year rather than the usual last round only. They will certainly be getting taped in our household.

Yeah mayes is a gun...played at my local club. I still remember a 15 year old mayes and his lethal kick...i use to brace for impact when he was kicking to me in drills.

What alot of people dont seem to know about mayes is that he is also a great strong marking wingman with a awesome long accurate kick...he played his role for years
. But people seem to have penciled him in as a hf. I wonder if he will be let lose in the midfield this under 18 champs

Quigs, when are these games on? Might be tempted to wander out for a day in the sun, not that I know anything about the youngsters beyond the big names.

Didak is the guy he reminds me a lot of. He can play anywhere on the field and excel.

Did that article say that Shaw kicked 8.4 in his first Colts game back from a broken jaw? Definitely worth keeping an eye on if that's the case.

We need the 2 most elite classiest mids we can get our hands on in this draft. Forget key position, we can find those later in the draft or through the local leagues.

For me the quality of the top 5 is about on par with most years. The next 5 though could also be in the top 5 most years and the top 25-30 as a unit are better than we have seen for a five or six years. After that the quality drops away although I am sure guys in that region will step up between now and the end of the year.

Interesting to note Jackson Starcevich has been granted his release to play for our reserves.

Unusual that we would ask for a specific player from a club other than the Western Magpies. Me thinks his last name may have something to do with it.

I think he got knocked back in his application to play as an overage player at the Champs and its likely his old man is calling in a few favours to try and give him the best chance of being drafted this year. He is a big kid that can give us a few different looks with who plays and doesn't. I don't see much downside for us.

It was a bit of an eyebrow raiser.

Jackson was obviously passed over last year (including Pies F/S), but he played pretty well against GWS (then again, who didn't?). He presents well at the footy, takes a good grab and has a decent kick on him. Will be interesting to see what the club's intentions are with him.

Yeah I'm assuming it's the old man calling in a few favours in order boost his draft stock. I guess he's under our nose now and we can't miss him.

I'll be interested to hear how he goes Bob, never been much of a fan myself.

Has played in our last two ressies games. Looks alright. Lacking in a bit of mongrel but he's just a kid.

Would be a rookie listing at best I'd reckon.

Yeah, lack of mongrel and inability to compete in the ruck.

Would love to know if his marks are contested or a result of gaining separation. Suspect the latter.

Anyone for taking Mason Shaw with our first pick 198 cm KPF from South fremantle kick 66 goals last year rate one of the best KPF in the years draft.

Brain coleman-broome he is in the Lions academy I was just wondering do the Lions have first acess to him or do the suns? Some people have said even though he is in the Lions academy we don't get first acess because the Suns still have one more year of be able to take any QLD player they want. And us having first acess to our academy players starts next year.

Shaw may well be a great pick up, but I think what we really need to think about for our first pick or two is skilled mids who could become elite. I really think it's unfair to say our young forwards are under-performing when they've had such little quality delivery.

I also think we need to draft at least one young key defender in this draft. Massive need for us going forward.

This is the last year the Suns get priority access to QLD kids. I'm not sure Coleman-Broome will be one of them.

He's a pleasure to watch play though. Silky smooth. Struggles with the fitness side of things though.

I agree. at first I was thinking we needed a key forward, but now I am leaning greatly towards gun mids...and especially those who push forward and kick goals.

We should use our 1st pick to trade in beams, or best available midfielder. Hopefully a Jack Darling type slides again and we wont be so stupid to pass with our 2nd or priority pick

I think our mid stocks are better than they currently appear. As most of you know, you don't draft 18yo's to fill holes next year, and I think in a couple of years our midfield will be coming together nicely.

Having said that, for the first time in years I'm currently leaning towards just taking best available with our first pick this year (bar a ruck). We can draft for needs (like a KPD) with later picks. I'm sure that'll change after the U18 champs though.

agree to a point...we just lack that a few speedy mid/hf players.
