2012 Draft Discussion

I am curious as to how it works with being able to have access to these lads.

If they are Lions academy members we have access to them under the same rules used for father/son selections.

Eg. Let's say we have picks 6, 24, 42 and 60. North Melbourne want Tickner and bid for him with their first pick (let's say 10). If we want Tickner, we can claim him with our next best pick after the highest bid. So he would cost us pick 24.

If no one else bids on them (as happened with Dylan Buckley father/son to Carlton), we can take the player with our final draft pick.

I am curious as to how it works with being able to have access to these lads. Isaac Conway 181cm, 82kg (76)
Cain Tickner 193cm, 89!!kg (73) both sound like good prospects. Do we use draft picks or do they go onto our rookie list and are only able to pick one or more?

I might be wrong, but I think it's like the current father-son bidding. Clubs will bid on "our" kids and we have the right to match that bid if we want to. If no one bids, we get to take them with our last draft pick.

Edit: beaten to the punch by TBD. Again.

Ok thanks for that, not too sure how I feel about that. These lads are in our academy and we put time and effort into them to assist them to be the best they can and then someone else can call dibs on them. Let's be honest with the QLD system. It wouldn't nearly be as professional as VIC, WA and SA in regards to youth programs. Oh well! How do you think Tickner and Conway and others are tracking anyways?

Put it this way - there's every chance that we'll have the choice of taking the highest rated tall player in the draft with pick 5.

What will throw another spanner into the works would be if Tickner and/or Conway start pushing themselves up the rankings, that by the end of the year, one/either could be top 10 picks next year (wishful thinking I know, but you never know). If we show a fair bit of improvement come the end of the season, and looks like we may not have a pick as high as 5 next year, I guess it could be worth a shot on Hogan if we rank him highly enough. Remembering that clubs could force us to use our first round pick on the hypothetical top 10 ranked Tickner/Conway if we want them next year.

A lot of hypotheticals I know, but we have a bye, and I'm meant to be studying for exams :)

The thing is, like the father-son process, clubs can't just bid and force our hand. They have to legitimately value the kid at that point. The time and effort we put in are paid off in the form of having access to them in the event that someone want them as well.

It's not a free kick per se, just an advantage.

The big advantage will come (also it'll also cue the Victorian clubs having a sook, *cough* Eddie) is when we have two (or more) players that could potentially be first round prospects and we can take them with our first and second round picks (i.e. the Bulldogs with Wallis and Liberatore) despite both being potential first rounders.

The first bunch of academy kids come through next year, so low. :)

Officially, maybe, but I'm talking about the likes of Ives and Aliir who are draft eligible this year yet have been playing/training with the academy.

We'll always have the option to match the bid. So the only way another team will end up with them is if they bid on them and we don't value them as high as the pick that we would have to use. We get the right of last reply, so they will only go to another club if we have declined to match the bid with our following pick.

If our picks next year are say 10, 28, 46, 64. The only way for us to have to spend pick 10 for these academy kids if someone bids a pick below 10 - it's been a long time since a Qld prospect has been rated that highly. Even if another team bids their first pick (say pick 16), we only have to match it with pick 28, hypothetically.

As you say, the big advantage is if there are multiple academy kids rated around the same. For example, if all of Tickner, Conway and Gribble are rated around 20-30, we can pick them up for 28, 46 and 64! Only "normal" draft picks are used for bidding - not compensation or priority picks.

Jesse Hogan is a separate issue. If we genuinely think he's better than any key forward this year and we want one, we should bid for him. Yes our first pick would need to be involved, plus likely something else. It's hard to know what'll get the job done though, as it's very much open to anyone, and a very keen club will be willing to put in a seriously good bid. Not just picks either - other clubs may offer experienced players of which GWS lack - the way it was meant to be used in the first place.

And assuming Hogan nominates for the mini-draft, someone will definitely grab him this year, taking him out of the picture for next year. GWS will definitely sell both their remaining mini-draft picks, as they can't use them themselves. They would be unwise not to take advantage of this free kick.

It was a hypothetical based on a Qld prospect being rated highly, which I agree, hasn't happened in a while (thinking about it, the last to be rated that high would've been Armitage in 2006 I think?).

You raise some good points about the Hogan, will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Few highlights on the AFL website of the U18's;

They can't call dibs really, we always have the final say. It's a pretty good system for us.

Yeah,

Sounds like a nice free kick our way.

Hopefully we take full advantage of it while it lasts....

Hogan booted 2.3 among 20 possies against NSW today, while Shaw kicked 3.1 with 10 possies and Paparone collected bagged 2.3 and 12. Stats.

Next round will be very interesting to see how Hogan holds up against the big boys. Still very happy by his numbers and would be interested to hear from someone who was there. Look forward to watching him in the last round at Etihad on Fox to get more of an idea of him.

imagine if brisbane where to get another voss out of the academy and only used a 4th round or whatever pick

eddies fat head would explode :D

Just to change tack slightly, but if we were to finish below Melbourne (you would hope not judging on the current ladder, so maybe this is just hypothetical), do we nominate Jack Viney with our first pick? Forcing Melbourne to use one of their round 1 picks and he sounds like the sort of player we would want anyway. Would GWS or GC nominate him? would hate it if Melbourne managed to get him with a round 2 pick and being able to pick another 2 elite players ahead of us.

Mods: feel free to delete this if it has already been discussed, but I just scanned the thread and couldn't see anything.

I agree it would be most unfair for them to get him with a round 2 pick, but does seems likely to happen though....

One interesting dilemma that could happen is if we have a highly rated Academy player coming through in an area that we are already strong in, whereas we could fill a hole by using the corresponding pick normally. That is about the only instance where I can think of where the Lions wouldn't take the Academy player.

Not going to be for a while yet though, given the widespread holes across our list.

once again im defitnetly in the you cant have to many elite midfielders group
If we were to go mid first pick who takes your fancy, Toumpas looks impressive, Simpson has speed and Vlaustin is an in and under toiler. For me I like the look of Toumpas. Plays well on the big stage with a very nIce skill set and some toe to go with it.

Mayes!

If we got Mayes or Toumpas I would be stoked. I had Toumpas rated at 2 coming into the year based on how he finished last year. Mayes has a bit more class but I had seen less of him in the midfield. Both should be top players imho.

dlanod - we could run into that type of situation next year with Gray. He is a big ruckman but with Leuey and Longer ruck will not be a big need for us. With that said he will probably only cost us a lower round pick so he could be brought onboard as cheap insurance at the worst and a valuable trade piece as he develops.
