Yeah I can't see GWS or Gold Coast getting a priority pick this year at all. I wonder if the AFL would give us a priority pick if we finished with 5 or 6 wins, Demetriou came out and said that Brisbane were being neglected some what and needed more support from the AFL. Probably just wishful thinking and I would prefer more than 6 wins anyway.

The Suns traded away their first pick last year for O'Meara who can't play this year. They will most likely have the first pick this year in Whitfield. Those two will make a very big difference and there is no way the AFL should reward GC for deferring the improvement of their team.

Fair point, Quigs.

I still think Gold Coast will finish ahead of GWS, though. The second half of the season could get really painful for the Giants. I don't think they've rotated their kids quite as well as the Suns did last season, and the oldies will probably run out of puff. I expect the Suns will win comfortably at Metricon.

That said, I reckon that'll be their only win.

Toumpas had a quiet one on the weekend apparently with very little TOG.

Here is the reason why (from AFL website http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/138656/default.aspx#embedvideoplayer):

"ONE OF the games of this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships will be played without one of its brightest stars with star junior midfielder Jimmy Toumpas ruled out with a hip injury.

Toumpas, who suffered the injury when he copped a knock in last week's round-two win over the Northern Territory, has been touted as a possible top-five pick at this year's NAB AFL Draft.

In his only full game of the carnival, Toumpas gathered 34 possessions as the Croweaters demolished Tasmania by 144-points in round one."

There had to be a good reason for his stats / TOG, as Jimmy is one of the elite prospects coming through this years draft.
He was ultra impressive in last years SANFL Seniors finals for the Eagles, and looks all class when pitted against his peers.
Being a valuable contributor to a SANFL premiership, at 17 years of age, looks good on his resume.

Unfortunately I concur with others on here that we may not get the chance to consider him as a pick (even if we are at 5 or 6).

Not so sure....

If the GC finish with 0, 1 or 2 wins then I think they will pretty much force the AFL to give them a priority pick to help them out, as they really do seem to need it. Can see them falling below the Giants very quickly at this rate....

No way will the Giants get a pick though, they have already been given way more concessions than the GC ever got....

I think Leigh even came out and roasted the GC for thinking they will be finals bound shortly. Based on that one would assume that both GC and GWS will collect.

I doubt it, though it wouldn't surprise me. Giving GC another highly rated 18 yr old kid is not going improve their chances next season.

After watching Patton and Cameron on the weekend it has made it evidently clear that if you have a young KPF and they are quality players they can make an impact earlier then the supposed 4-5 years that has been generalised. Understandable that Patton was a first pick and has been commented that Cameron would have gone very early if in the draft but if we can get it right we could have the same at the lions. Hawthorne and St Kilda are another good example of two young quality KPF coming in together and making an impact early in their careers. It is this, for me which highlights the need for drafting a quality KPF with our first pick and possibly with our compo pick. From only reading the info on Bigfooty and other sites I would be happy with Hogan and Paparone. Hogan in the mould of Brown and Paparone in the mould of N.Reiwoldt.

With Cameron still yet to play in the state carnival (I believe, at least) due to injury, is it possible the certainty of the Suns taking him is now a little less certain?

2 more gun midfielders please!!!

Let's chase another mature age ruckman- see Giles and try and pinch a developing defender from another club!

Surely Melbourne will take Grundy with an early pick.

If Melb don't have to use one of their first two picks on Viney I would expect Grundy to be right in the mix with them. If they do I would expect them to pass on him and take another mid.

GWS would have to be a likely suitor as well. Giles has done pretty well but I would not say he is a top shelf ruck technician although he probably would be an excellent number 2 / forward target. I like Phillips but he is certainly likely to be several rungs below Grundy. Brogan will retire after this year and Downie hasn't shown anything to date. The mids on the other hand for GWS have looked very good and so they could easily shore up the ruck this year and build their mids with other picks (eg those they pick up for the 2 mini-draft picks they have left to trade).

Grundy is a nice talent but he doesn't scream out that he would be the number one ahead of Leuenberger who is an AA level talent himself. With Longer picked up at number 8 last year as well there is zero chance that we will consider Grundy this year imho.

Go for picks 1 & 2 in the mini draft?

What would we have to offer up? It would be a big deal, and require our first round pick, a compo pick, and probably a future best 18 player for them.

Maybe: Pick 6, End of first round compo pick, and a player like Jed Adcock, Daniel Merrett or of that ilk. You would have to question whether it would be worth it.

Throw in Banfield and/or Golby as well.

Banfield is probably only worth a second rounder, as is Golby so they are not going to be of much value, you probably need a player worth a mid-late first rounder to get GWS interested.

Hogan and Martin would make for one hell of a half-forward line.

1st round pick and our compo pick are definitely needed but I don't think we have the right type of player and would need to somehow involve a 3rd party. Adcock is the only player I think would be useful to them and Merrett is too valuable to us.

Going for both mini round picks is a bit ambitious but if we were to get 1 that our recruiters thought (Hogan or Martin) are certainties for a top 3 pick next year then it has to be worth it. We're probably never going to bottom out enough to get access to a pick 1-3.

Anyone who wants to go and have a look at a few of our academy players run around the Champs are in Brisbane this weekend with Qld playing Tasmania at 11am on Saturday at Yeronga. Looking forward to hearing a few reports.

I might be able to get along depending on a few things. I've only seen the one QLD game this year so I'm certainly due.

Priority picks no longer exist. http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=129293

The clubs overall wanted it scrapped and I can't see the AFL reversing this decision.

They havent scrapped it as such. They just scrapped the way you automatically qualify by having a maximum number of wins. The AFL have reserved the right to give them out on a more subjective basis.
Can't see them do it in the short term. Clubs have realised that they gave away too much to GC & GWS and won't agree to priority picks until the players they have mature a bit more. So this would mean no compo picks in the next couple of years.
