I hate tanking as much as anyone, but my love for Toumpas has risen to extreme levels in this match on Fox Footy. There'll be a positive to every loss for the rest of this year...

He looks a gem, but I haven't allowed myself to even entertain the possibility of him getting to us.

Even if we lost every game from here I still think he'd be gone before our pick.

I probably need to be a bit more realistic like that too. He really is just what we need though.

Interesting to see Hogan playing a fair amount of his footy in defence today. He hasn't been bad at all. Still against a mini-draft trade though. Shaw does appear a bit overrated.

One of GWS, Melbourne, or Port will take Grundy. No doubt about it at all.

I agree with this, he wasn't at all impressive for them. I would love for us to get our hands on Toumpas but I did like the look of Garlett. Used his speed well and that goal from the boundary line was very nice.

Interesting post on the D&T board;

On the rating of this years draft Emma Quayle was sent the following tweet:

@emmasq Have to say this years kids seem no better then last years. And talk of this year being a super draft has been way over the top

Her reply:
Emma Quayle
agreed. Gonna write that up at the end of the champs

Interesting post on the D&T board;

I've been underwhelmed from the four games I've seen (only one of those live). Granted, ordinary conditions in Geelong didn't help showcase skills.

Having said that, it may not actually be a massive issue for us this year. There should still be quality at our picks.

Seems we are interested in this young Sudanese Alliir Alliir....big wraps on him and supposedly us and the Suns will be going after him....was one of the stand-outs in todays clash for Qld (won:thumbsu:) v WA?..

Not overly tall for a ruckman, but apparently can leap tall buildings in a single bound!!....sounds interesting, and I would love to see more of the Sudanese start to play our game....they seem so athletic, and it might get them off the streets and give them a purpose..

:thumbsu: from me if we get him..

Didn't even think to look at who wrote the article....will listen to your version of the situation:thumbsu:

Yeah, I'm with wbb - saw him in one of the games and he looked like a giraffe calf out there, all legs and run and jump but no idea of where to go or any game sense. Give him a couple of years in the QAFL though, and I'd keep an eye on him.

does he have short arms or "no room for improvement" like a certain other player who would have had the same things said about him???

hardly the best place for a guy learning the game to play unless his family is in qld or some other reason

didn't seem to harm Zorko
NEAFL is fine for new or under developed players to learn the game, if they have the talent, they will out grow the comp. Would help at being one of the top clubs though. End of the day, it was Zorko's hunger to play at the top level that saw him put in the effort and basically demand he get drafted. I asked Lisle at the sponsor function how the NEAFL compared to the VFL, he said the top few teams are VFL standard, it's only the rest that aren't. No reason why players can't do well there. I also think the NEAFL comp is getting stronger year on year. I don't follow the ressies as much as i would like, but look at the comp now compared to 5 years ago. AFL is improving in QLD, it's great to see.

For learning the game, I think it's fine. We've had successful recruits from the QAFL... the assumption should be that the QAFL gets them up to a good enough standard for an AFL club to take a punt on and figure they can develop them further.

Toumpas looks like he won't play much more footy this year due to a hip injury... Could he slide?

Only if other players really jump up over the rest of the season. Still hard to see a side with a top 5 pick knocking him back.

Any chance of the Lions targetting a big KPF early in the draft? perhaps as a successor for Brown?

...or are there are other areas that need to be addressed before this?

Not likely, more due to the dearth of KPFs that deserve to be taken with an early pick than our desire for one.

It depends where our first pick will be this year, as it stands we have Pick 9 and this could get higher hopefully as we push for finals. Shaw is seen as the best KPF this year, yet after the U18 Championships I would be wary of picking him up as he has struggled to make an impact. Jake Stringer is more of a mid/capable KPF he could be an option but could go earlier pending injury reports. Other than that no KPF has really stood up and demanded to be taken high. So unless we make a trade for a mini-draft pick then I couldn't see us drafting a KPF. I think we should look at adding some more pace into the midfield.

Dayle Gartlett should definitely be on our radar as a pacy inside/outside mid. I also think we could do with some more clearance players in our midfield, Oliver Wines is one player who we should look at as well.

Issue is an 18 year old kpf doesn't really fit in with our list. He wouldn't really hit his prime until our current up and comers are too old to form a super team. We probably need a mature aged kpf and/or kpd. Whether we get that through a trade (eg Tippett) or through a state competition I'm not sure. You'd have to think there are players out there capable of doing it - Jpods did it for the cats, and I doubt he's all there is.

Even thinking locally, there's quite a few good KPDs in the NEAFL. Gavin Grose from Mt Gravatt has impressed me a few times (although I believe he's been playing forward for part of this year). There'd have to be guys out there in the country who could do it though, and I reckon our scouts are currently keeping a close eye on them.

Patty how quickly we forget.

J Brown did pretty well as a kid amongst the vets.

Give an 18 year old 4 years and they will be coming into a decent age group whilst our mid group are still in their prime. Anyway there is no reason why the recruitment staff should not be planning for the next wave otherwise we will be in the same position again.

If any KPF warranted selection in the first round I would be keen for us to jump all over them. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much worthwhile at all. Some nice KPDers should be available in the second round but I am not sure I would reach for one as high as we will be picking.

If we get a mature KPF, it has to be one that is better than just average. Unless Pods mk 2 is available, the State Leagues are unlikely to produce anything better than what we've currently got on the list.

I would also say that elite tall forwards can make a quick mark on footy but you wouldn't want to be relying on it.
