just had a quick look at the country vs SA game, apart from Wines and highly rated co, Taylor looked great and Sumner looks to have all the attributes required at the top level. Would think that both might be around come 2nd round. Also liked the look of Kennedy from SA, has a bit of Kade Simpson about him.

I watched the WA v VM game last nite, Jesse Hogan is your perfect j.brown replacement IMO.
The kid was awesome in the second half, helping us pile on six unanswered majors. To get him you'll need to cough up your first rounder,I wonder if Brissy would be prepared to do that?

Was the game televised? Is it available online or maybe in torrents?

I imagine it'll be up on the AFL site in the next couple of days.

I think it'll depend on whether the Lions get Tippett.

My first choice would be Toumpas, but I very much doubt he'll be available at our pick.

Thereafter I'm currently struggling to split Hogan and Mayes, but I'd gladly take either.

The question is will he be still around when we get our first pick?

Hogan will only be available in GWS' mini-draft (if he nominates) and won't be able to play seniors until 2014. Thus to get him will be a matter of making a sufficient offer to GWS.

Hogan is the one we need to get our hands on. Need to fork out our first rounder and maybe a second rounder downgrade to GWS. If that is not possible my early pick at our first round is Shaw or Grundy.
Toumpas will long be gone.

Perhaps the Lions could sort out a deal to upgrade their first pick. Maybe with the Bulldogs depending on ladder position.

After watching the last 4 games in div 1 and from what I've read I thought I would throw my thoughts out there.

Have been stating to go for mini draft pIck to get Hogan but have moved away from that thought. He gives a good contest and a big frame. Delivery into their forward line was poor limiting possibility to make a big impact. To pay so much (possibly) to get our hands on him is a bit foolish.

Possible first round picks:
D Garlett showed some good signs and some definite speed and skill.
S Mayes was quite clean and again good skills.
O Wines showed some real grunt and toughness.

Out of those three I personally would go for Wines or Garlett.

Comp pick and second round
M Paparone definitely has some athletic attributes and could see him playing back like J Carlile from the bombers.
T Smith is a good shut down defender.
K Jaecsch has some versatility.
M Shaw if he slid this far and possibly could.

These two picks I feel we should go for some KPP's.

3rd round
L McBean would be a good developing ruckman

Hogan is the one we need to get our hands on.

Flicked on last night's coverage and was immediately taken by how superior Hogan is. Just moves like an elite forward. I can understand the hype now.

I accept that the off field stuff might have us wary but Garlett would top our midfield off beautifully - love the way he goes about it.

I personally think these off field issues have been blown out of proportion! Not nearly as bad as some are making out. He is the Number 1 player I want from this Draft. Another thing about him that caught my eye and made me even more keen on him was a comment he made, it went something like this: "I would be stoked if I got drafted by a W.A. club, however I would definitely prefer to be Drafted somewhere else interstate to get away from some of the troubles I've had here and start on a clean slate in a new state."

I thought that was a very promising comment because it shows us that he is dedicated to his footy and he wants to work hard and put all his troubles behind him. It also shows us he is unlikely to be homesick. Jeff Garlett from Carlton hasn't got homesick so hopefully Dayle follows in his footsteps if we draft him.

He isn't overly fast but I would still call him quick. He can lay a good tackle, he has beautiful skills on both hands and feet and he can kick a goal. He is the type of player our midfield is lacking IMHO!

JJ I would be surprised if McBean was not taken in the first round. If we wanted him and he was still there I think we would need to use our compo pick. It would not surprise me if he snuck up around the 10 mark when things are all is said and done.

All of the options you mention I think are good ones although I have to say I have gone off Paparone a bit. He moves very nicely but his kicking especially yesterday was appalling. He seemed constitutionally unable to hit a target with his awkward two handed high release.

If we end up picking around 10-12 I am thinking I might still go with Shaw if I was the Lions. His champs form has been very poor but he still has very good potential and his WAFL form is a lot better. His size also sets him apart from other options likely to be available.

I agree on Shaw Quigs, however that is subject to us having a pick before the Dockers. Otherwise I am a strong believer in best available and to go past Grundy would simply be negligent. I rate him highly.
Garlett is also attractive to our needs but we better be sure that we don't inject dikkheads back into our team. Due-diligence and caution needs to be applied in this instance. However I would leave that to Hadley to sort out. He'd be on top of all the WA guys.

Would be funny to see the reactions on this board if we went with Grundy.

Why, have the recruiters made a mistake since Gamby has left. If they rate him (as I do) they should have no hesitation in pulling the trigger.

There were some signs from Shaw especially when he was able to run in the ruck for parts of the game that he did seem a bit more free. As stated the WA delivery wasn't that good and from memory they were dominating the inside 50's but but were gettIng smashed on the scoreboard. VM mids (and when they played SA on Fri) were a class above WA's so this would certainly play it's part. I'm sure the recruiting team will do their due diligence. In hindsight losing M Clark and also L Henderson has really put us back. Having those two still would've meant we could add to our midfield group but have to rebuild in KPP.

I think it would be amusing because majority of people would be disappointed with taking a ruck in the 1st round 2 years in a row when we already have one of the better rucks in the game on our list as well.

I appreciate that view Gibbo and it has some merit. However if "Best Available" principle is to be applied strictly to the letter of the law it may mean drafting Grundy.

Kerr made it clear last year that recruitment strategy is a balance between taking the best available talent and your list needs.

Naturally we approached it from the point of view of trying to bring the best available talent into our Club given the needs of our list.

Unless you are bereft of talent on every line, some needs analysis will be factored into the selection process. Strict adherence to "best available" creates the risk of list imbalance.

I really like Grundy. The club apparently ranked Longer in the top 5 last year - I'd have Grundy as ahead of Billy based on what I've seen which suggests Grundy is easily worth taking with a pick 9 if available.

But I'm not convinced that Grundy fills the sort of pressing need that a key forward/defender or ball using mid would. He wouldn't be out of place on our list and he'd certainly be an asset but I don't think a ruck-forward would come out at the top of a needs analysis. I wouldn't knock Grundy back but he's not a great fit from a list management perspective.

Personally reckon we are no chance for Gartlett. Melbourne are activating there priority pick to be taken immediately after their R1 pick which means our first pick could be as high as 10.
Based on current ladder positions it would be...

1. Gold Coast
2. GWS
3. Melbourne
4. Melbourne (Scully compo)
5. Port Adelaide
6. Western Bulldogs
7. Western Bulldogs (Ward compo)
8. Fremantle
9. Brisbane
