2012 Draft Discussion

I know Cameron is rated a first round talent, but given he has played 4 games this year it's hard to gauge where he fits.

Boston probably doesn't have enough strings to his bow to go at that stage. At a guess I'd say Boston is 35+

I wouldn't mind Boston on our list purely for the fact that I think he would be a great small forward, he has good skills and decent athleticism and knows where the goals are. Just needs to improve defensive game but the offensive game is there.

Clay Cameron is hard to judge, he suffers from 1) being injured/out of decent form most of the year, 2) Being only 190cm, is he a KPF?CHB? I think he would make a great third tall though. I think he is more of a second round prospect and anyone from then on.

Also POBT, Aaron Hall is on the senior list already, promoted with a spot at the end of last year. I'd agree that we would elevate Horsley though.

Thanks Sunny - I actually meant the other Hall. Probably not showing enough yet to warrant promotion though.

Na, I wouldn't think so. Not bad in his debut game, but way off it in the follow-up. Probably more looking at 2014 when he can get regular senior games, if he can keep that rate of improvement up.

From memory Suns announced Sexton as zone selection quite early last year and so he didn't actually attend draft combine (can't remember when they announced Allen but don't think he attended combine either - I think Yagmoor was only Qlder - remainder attended state screening). With letters apparently starting to arrive this week to those invited to combine or state screening, if Suns have decided on anyone already, might get a hint of their intentions if Cameron, Boston or Bourke's name is missing from list. Although, if general announcement is done like last year, AFL will release a few names every week so we won't see the full invite list until a week or two before the actual testing in early Oct even though players will all know this week! (and by then Suns may well have announced their intentions anyway). If they are all on the testing list presumably will suggest they haven't made any decisions (or won't be taking anyone).

The Qld players they traded eg Yagmoor and Zorko, did go to testing last year - presumably any potential trading of Qld zone picks to Lions or anyone else can only go on in trade week? Or could the Lions be already having such discussions with the Suns about someone they were interested in?

From a Qld footy point of view would be good to see a few names from Qld U18's and from NEAFL teams on the testing list to show they are at least under consideration, and even better if 1 or 2 ended up at the Lions, either Listed or as rookies

For what it's worth Boston going to draft combine (as per Broadbeach website) - presumably means Suns not committed to him as yet if process same as last year?? Mt Gravatt website essentially a non event so will have to wait to hear about Cameron once names of Qld invites spreads around town.

I think it's a year to take our minimum commitment and not too many more. We need to get games into the players we do have and only go top 30 picks in the draft + rookie upgrades. Our likely de-listings are going to be pretty experienced players which will make our list even younger.

With the deadline for the mini-draft nominations passing today, both Hogan and Martin have nominated for it (along with 14 other kids).

Link.

Even though it was mostly a given that the big two would put their names in we did have to wait awhile. Our first round and player for Hogan I feel should get it done. Or possibly first round and compo pick at 23 (I believe) for Hogan and another player. Just like what Adelaide did last year.

Mmmm...problem with getting Hogan is both Melbourne and the Bulldogs will have two picks ahead of our first pick and could do with a KPF. I imagine one of them will trump us.

We could throw our compo or second round pick into the equation if Hogan is regarded highly enough.

Just as the other clubs could toss in their 2nd rounders.

4+26 or 5+27 trumps 8+23.

Yes, however there is another fella who everyone wants and I'm hoping that GC, Melb and WB might possibly drive the value of Martin up so when it comes to Hogan they'll be a bit gun shy in this regards. Not too sure bout WB needing a KPF or GC but Melb on the other hand. As an outsider I feel that Melb needs as many classy Mid types it can get.

Depends on how badly they want him. A top 5 pick plus another pretty decent pick is starting look like all eggs in one basket.

GWS may not be keen to deal with the Demons given the already frosty relationship.

Can they say no to a particular club? Not sure how it works.

Besides, GWS got their man. They might take a bit of pleasure taking a few high draft picks off Melbourne's hands to boot.

It'll be interesting in regards to Martin if GWS value GC 2nd pick or one of WB 1st round pick and there mid round pick for ward which they could use in later drafts. I personally feel we could be in with a big show for Hogan.

Yep. Blind auction, so GWS gets to choose. Otherwise how would they value one player against another (if there were no draft picks involved)?

I thought GWS get to decide what they want from clubs. So they could just keep saying no that is not good enough to the Demons.

So, if BB's scenario came true (re bad blood) and the Dogs offer was pick 5 and Melbourne's was pick 4, they could choose the Dogs just out of spite?

The great thing is either Hogan or Martin would be great for our list, but Martin seems the one that will force out the top 10 picks. What this means is that for pick 2 in the mini-draft, we may not have to pay too much and may score Hogan in the process.

I know Hogan fills a more pressing need for us, but for those that have seen both, is he really a better player than say Garlett, who we seem to be continually linked with at pick 8....

I think he'll be the standout KPF at next year's draft, so I would say in those terms, yes. But I guess there is an element of scepticism with giving up too much to get Hogan, as Mason Shaw was the standout KPF the year before his draft year and his stocks have definitely plummeted this year.

The other issue with Hogan is that he will take four or five years from next year to become a regular AFL player. As I've mentioned before, by that stage our young guys won't be so young anymore. I still think he'd be my preference though.

Rich Redden and Rockliff would be around 26, Karnezis & Polec 24, Leuey 28, Merrett & Patfull might still be around...sounds like a good group of experienced players to me :thumbsu:
