2012 Draft Discussion

It's coming to the conclusion that the hype was largely hype. Also, four of the best talents (O'Meara, Crouch, Daniher and Viney) are already locked up.

I know I said this previously, but I don't think you can underestimate the impact of this on the perceived quality of the draft. Viney to a lesser extent (as he is likely to be a top 3 pick anyway) but O'Meara, Whitfield and Daniher would be a fair trio to choose from.

Might as well throw Jed Anderson in that list, though he wouldn't be that top five pick that those boys would have been.

If you ignore everything, I'd guess at an order of (I assume a good tall gets preference over mids, based off previous drafts):

1) Daniher
2) O'Meara
3) Whitfield
4) Grundy
5) Crouch
6) Viney (a couple more about this level too)

Which means that we'd be half a chance at someone like Toumpas at pick 8. That's a strong cohort.

Its probably on here somewhere, but I will ask anyway, have we activated any compensation picks this year.

Its probably on here somewhere, but I will ask anyway, have we activated any compensation picks this year.

We only had one left (Rischitelli) and we've activated it. I think it works out as pick 23 this year.

If I am honest Blue not a hell of a lot. He was a guy I had on my list to keep an eye on this year after impressing me toward the end of last year in the TAC. He has been solid this year without setting the world on fire but I thought I would throw his name out there nonetheless. He is a smart inside mid who reads the play well and can sneak forward and kick a goal. He is pretty quick and agile but probably lacks a bit on the endurance front atm. He put on a bit of weight this year and might be struggling a little to compensate. He is not elite on the hands front and can fumble but he is pretty reasonable. Overall I thought there was a bit to work with and he would fit a need for us.

If jimmy Toumpas is available after pick 5 there will be some list and recruiting managers ducking for cover in 2 years time! Not a chance.

He meant specifically if Daniher, O'Meara, Crouch and Viney were all generally available in this draft. :P

Another question for Quigley. How does Kennedy compare to Garlett as a potential first selection for us. In particular does he have any x factor

Kennedy is a very good player with definate X factor. Nice pace and skills and definately knows where the goals are. He is also pretty good onball although I would put him behind Garlett (note many probably would not). My issue with him is his height. He is only 174cm and I think we already lack a little in height through the midfield with Zorko running through there and potentially Green next year. Kennedy will start his career in the forward line and I think will do very well. I could definately see him becoming a Brent Harvey type of player. If we ended up with Ben I would have absolutely no problem. He will be a good player.

I've got to say that if it is only height that is worrying you Quigs then I'd pull the trigger. Sure, we might have a couple of short arses there but, equally, we'll also have Redden (close to 190cm) and Rockliff (plays tall) with indications that Karnezis and Lester are being looked at for midfield stints too. Even if Zorko and Green played more minutes in the midfield, I don't believe our list balance would be out of whack in terms of height, particularly given we then also have some classic 6 footers like Polec, Harwood etc too.

I think what our midfield is missing is skills, explosiveness and goals. Both Kennedy and Garlett look likely types to add that to our mix.

There is one significant difference between Garlett and Kennedy. One has a much more developed defensive game the other has none.

A lot of "star" juniors don't offer much defensively coming out of the junior ranks. Personally I mark ball winners up a bit for being good defensively but I don't really mark them down if they don't do much defensively. Defensive skills can be learnt and expection will lift effort in that regard.

I'm a big fan of Kennedy. His attributes would add a point of difference to our midfield. Height shmeight.

I really like Kennedy, and have to this point figured I would 'accept' his selection, while his height with our existing mid mix has made me want for a more perfect fit. Having said that I've mentally moved Karny into our future midfield since I formed that opinion so I might need to re-address it.

Garlett just makes me nervous.

Come to think of it Yeo (189cm) has shored up his spot in my 'future 22' recently as well, which further improves my opinion on selecting Kennedy.

I would have no issues with selecting either Gartlett or Kennedy, of the two though I would prefer Kennedy, I just think he has a much better rounded game, and as far as X-factor goes they are probably about equal. I think that Kennedy could start as a small forward and would be better than anyone on our list, and would provide solid minutes in the middle, eventually I think he could become a full time mid, who is good both inside and outside with his run and carry.

As far as Wines v Gartlett, I would take Gartlett too, he provides more run and carry, has better skills, much more damaging and kicks more goals. Wines would be more useful in the clearances though I think he is a touch overrated for mine.

Quigs,

What's your thoughts on Colquhoun?

I rate him highly, and think he'll be a good pick up, regardless of where he goes. What are your thoughts on his draft position?

I wouldn't have him as top 10 but definitely an early 2nd rounder or our compo pick. He'd add a lot to our small defenders in the future, Docherty, Golby and Harwood.

I think our midfield will be quite tall in the future. Jobe Watson is 190cm

Redden is 189cm
Yeo is 189cm
Polec is 189cm
Karnezis is 191cm
Lester is 191cm

The first three are genuine midfielders and hopefully the last two can turn go in the middle to. Karnezis in particular has something special about him. We just need more defensive effort from our midfield ground. But the guys we have now aren't bad, just give it time before the fruit of post-2008 drafting help fix the errors of our past drafts

I haven't made up my mind yet. Even during the Champs I was negative on him and was still thinking of him as a third rounder who would be overrated by someone and taken in the second somewhere. I am starting to think I may have been a bit harsh on him and will go back and look more closely at him. Ask again after the combine and I will probably have a firmer opinion on him.

Thank you Quigley for your thoughts on Kennedy.

If he has the same upside but is less likely to come with baggage then he is my preferred choice over Garlett. Just wanted to hear he had something special to bring to the table first because we need that in the 22.

O'Rourke is another I would add to the list of possibilities at our pick and would probably be my preference, although there is a good chance he won't be there, but this year there is not a clear cut order after pick 4ish, IMO. He is a very, very good smooth moving inside/outside mid who uses the ball very well. Just looks super classy.
