2012 Draft Discussion

Ok guys. If we select Dayle Garlett in the draft, I will streak at our first home game next year shouting "we got Garlett" "we got Garlett"!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness though I have not wanted us to select a player more then him since I wanted the Lions to pick Callum Bartlett in 2009.

What are the differences between Garlett and Bennell when he was in his draft year.

Garlett is more Cyril Rioli than Bennell. Our list really lacks that type of player though. A Bennell or a Rioli.
We do lack a Rioli or Bennell they are both class acts. Garlett worries me due to his off field issues

I agree that upgrading our picks would be excellent. We have good depth but not enough top end talent.

I'd like to trade picks 8, 23 and 30 to Melbourne for picks 3 or 4 and 45.

Would love that.

Would love that.

My only worry is lack of young KPDs and it sounds like picks 23 or 30 could be used for a key back. Unless we can trade 45 for Post or similar.

It's got no chance of happening but if there is a mass exodus from Melbourne they would love 6 picks in the first 30.

Really like Tanner Smith at pick 23, but he probably wont be available

Key backs would be avilable at 23 to 30 in the draft but can't see a good KPF avilable at these picks with Adelaide (To replace Tippett ) Collingwood (to replace Cloke) Fremantle and Sydney all needing forwards and having picks before us

Which do you think is better - to have pick 13 or to have pick 23 and 30?

If we aren't going to be taking many and Melbourne are, that's a pretty obvious case where 23 and 30 could be considered better than 13 as it lets them take more high-end (ish) talent while we don't waste pick 30. There's probably a bit too big differential between 23 and 13 though, but packaging up 23 & 30 for a pick around 15-18 might be worth considering depending on how many picks the club is likely to use.

CAN'T see us trading any of our picks unless it's tippett would rather trade a player like Banfield to say West Coast for their first pick 17? I think it is

So would I, but whether West Coast would even want him for free is debatable, let alone for a first round pick.

Would really like us to trade pick 23 and 30 for Melbournes pick 13.
Thoughts?

I like the idea of upgrading our picks to get some "top end" talent very much doubt that Melbourne will be looking to get more picks thou.

As it stands Melbourne have pick 3,4,13,27, added to that they should get reasonable compensation for Maloney if they don't pick any free agents up themselves (not too sure about the formula but maybe a second rounder, which would be pick 28) Melbourne might be in the same position as us trying to upgrade picks 27/28 to have 4 selections inside the top 15

I think our best chance of upgrading would be with a fringe player and teams who arent going through a total rebuilding phase. The top teams dont offer much in terms of upgrading picks(5-10 places) but a team like Carlton with their mature established list might be willing to downgrade picks to get a certain type player.

Surely won't get drafted. Too much risk. Any club interested is better off leaving him for 2 years and picking him up as a mature age.

If he's as good a player as I've been reading, he'll definitely get drafted. But more likely to be around pick 25 than top 10 now.

He will get drafted no doubt a club would definitely take a risk with him, but pending on the severity of the knee injury I could see him slide down the order from the top 10 he was probably going to be in. He will go second round at worst imo, he is similar to Bartlett, picked at 27 despite having bad knees.
