2012 Draft Discussion

I think whether we are a chance in the minidraft will come down to whether GC force Melb to use pick 3 on Viney. If they don't Melb are a reasonable chance to bid for a minidraft pick with pick 4 and then the Bulldogs would be in for the second pick.

I can definately see Melb and GC coming to a gentleman's agreement where GC do not bid for Viney and Melb overpay for Caddy. It would probably suit both clubs although technically it would be manipulating the draft.

If we were to bid I think the following might be somethink like:

Give: Picks 8 and 23
Receive: minidraft pick 2 + Dom Barry

^^ Marvelous Quigley.

I think with a slight amount of divine intervention Picks 8 & 23 for MD 2 (hopefully Hogan) + someone like Dom Barry would be fantastic. Especially seeing how the club is moving forward, this would be a great leap in the right direction.

Dom Barry played for NT this year in the under 18 champs and looks like a player. GWS have the ability to list any of the NT guys this year just like GC do for Qld kids. Like GC did with Yagmoor last year GWS could take Barry and then trade him to the Lions. If you have a look on the Phantom Draft board in teh Draft and Trade board you should get a profile of him.

This is the write up from Chris

#34 Fremantle - Dominic Barry (183cm midfielder - Alice Springs/North Ballarat)

Players from the Northern Territory are always terribly underrated in my opinion, especially when you look at some of the other players who get drafted ahead of them - ones without even a fraction of the talent of the guys from up north. Obviously Jed Anderson is the standout from the NT, but I don't think Barry will end up too far behind him. History says he'll be a rookie, but oh well.

Barry looks a little like Stephen Hill when he has the ball in his hands - as soon as he gets the ball he is off and running, and has a similar running style to Hill. He had a few long runs through the midfield for NT in the Championships, and showed he could also finish the play off with a goal too. His kicking is generally pretty good, but not in the Hill category and he can turn it over every now and then. But with everything else he offers, that's a minor issue which can be worked on.

Not to be confused with Don Barry who was a lions international rookie from PNG. I had to do a google search to ensure we weren't talking about the same person as it had me scratching my head for a bit there.

It appears as an outsider that Vossy has issues with Polec and his willingness, or otherwise, to impact the contest- if that is correct, I couldn't see him being that enthused about Barry. I saw him at the nationals at Visy and then again in the first week of the TAC cup finals and he appeared to be extremely reluctant to engage in any physical contest. For those that have seen a bit more of him, were these performances the exception or the norm? In fairness to the boy, there have been some better reports from Saturdays game from posters in TAC Cup thread.

I really hope the club does their due diligence on the 3 american rookies and rookie 2 or all of them they can potentially solve all our kpp needs. I would have absolutely no idea about their skills but being 105kg and running a 2.92sec for the 20 metre sprint is like a carbon copy of daniel merrett when he first started out at the club. Yannick Crowder could be the next naitanui.

I'm much more sceptical than most on them, and don't think I'd take any to be honest. They've currently got no real understanding of the game at all. The same could be said for Irish recruits, yet they play a game with similar movements and skills. Obviously we'll wait and see what happens at the combine, but I'm not overly fussed on them at all right now.

Has anyone got any info on possible father/son pick Mitchell Pert? Is he any good and do we have a realistic chance of picking him up? If so i think it would be a great thing for the club and it's ties to Fitzroy to have a third generation Pert running around

You are dreaming I think. They don't need to take him with any draft pick. They list him outside of the draft process.

Really? That sounds a bit odd, but my knowledge of the GWS/NT deal isn't that great, so I wouldn't really know. Is he far and away the best kid out of NT this year though?

Talk today of several clubs looking at Grundy (202cm) for their first pick. And if Melb are forced to select Viney in the first round, could open it up for us to get that gun mid?

Was actually thinking a out where Grundy could go. You would assume that GWS would need that top of the line ruck but pick 1 would be too much of a stretch. GC are fine for rucks. Leaving Melb, WB and Port. I would believe that he wouldn't get past Ports first pick.

I was thinking Melb or more likely WB or Port would take him, meaning one extra mid available for our selection. Rendell has been talking him up as the best ruck in a shallow draft for ruckmen.

On Grundy:

GC has ruck stocks - the question is whether they have one of Grundy's potential quality. They also have a heap of mids so you could mount the same argument why they wouldn't take Toumpas at #2. I wouldn't put it past them to cash in on Nicholls and maybe even Hickey and take Grundy - not the most likely outcome though. I tend to agree that they'll pass on Grundy.

Some Melbourne supporters reckon they've got ruck coverage. I don't agree, particularly if Martin gets headhunted. Grundy might be too good to pass up. They are the favourites IMO. Taking Viney early might change their plans though.

The Bulldogs have got coverage - surely with Roughead, Campbell and Cordy on their books, they don't want another ruck, even if they lose Minson.

Port has a relatively young ruck brigade who have each shown a bit. Grundy might be impossible to pass though as he looks to be in a different class. Might have greater needs though?

I'd be surprised if we took Grundy. I don't reckon Richmond will look at taking a ruck now that Maric has established himself, with Vickery as the ruck-forward. Essendon is out due to Daniher and Carlton has a thousand young rucks.

So we're at St Kilda with pick 12. I reckon they would take him in a heartbeat.

Gut feel - Melbourne, St Kilda would be the likely destinations based on current draft order.

However, you'd have to think that GWS will take him if they get a second top 6 pick for their mini-draft picks.

Can't see Port passing on Grundy. I still think the Demons will take him.
Agree. They have been hurt more than most with the "go-home" factor and no risk of that here.

If Grundy is there when Port pick they will take him. He is too good a prospect to pass up for them. Their young rucks have looked okay but really nothing more than that. Grundy should be an elite ruck and where they are picking I am sure they will grab him.

Assuming the order goes something like this:

GWS: Whitfield
GC: O'Rourke
MELB: Viney
MELB: Mayes
WB: Plowman
WB: Wines/Shaw
PORT: Grundy

There is still a (very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very slim) chance that Toumpas could slide to us. I probably need to start being realistic.

I've done a bit of research on Macrae, though, and think he's probably now my preference for pick 8.
