2012 Draft Discussion

Everyone thought we would pass on Leuenberger, but times have changed for ruckmen since then.

I suspect it would depend on Grundy's potential as a forward. It would be hard to accommodate another player who is mainly a ruckman.

Grundy at 8 would surely be the best talent available, unless Whitfield was available. Personally I wouldn't say no to him, but a mid would be much more useful. He is first and foremost a ruckman, and an elite young prospect, the best since Natanui, but his forward work is good but not the main part of his game. We would be drafting him as a ruckman, and we need help in other areas, so he should not be on our list. He will probably go to either Melbourne or GWS, if they get another high pick.

This is where it would be good to make draft day trades, so we could trade the pick to another team for something of more value.

Looking closer at that decision, we had Charman, Wood, McDonald and Keating on the list as our ruckman (Clark was considered a forward rather than a ruckman). A handy quartet, but the latter two were injury-prone and Charman also proved to be flaky. Not such a strange decision, esepcially when made with the medical knoweldge the list management arm would have had.

Granted Leuenberger has had his share of injury issues, but I just can't see us claiming a third top-10 ruckman, a year after taking Longer.

Get Grundy (Bert Man is being dellisional) we trade Longer. Wait did I actually just say that

What are peoples thoughts on Tom Temay. Would love him at pick 49. Even if we took him at pick 30 id be happy. Smart player who can accumulate the footy.
Thoughts?

A mature age ruck with pick 49 from state league. One in the 22-25 age bracket. Big body ready to go as back if injury requires. Especially if Hudson re-retires.

Watched a little bit of the North Adelaide game from the weekend which is on ABC iView BTW. If Mayes is available at 8 we have to pick him up. Really hope he slides.

the players i really like in no particular order Brian coleman -broome ,,braedon mclean , chris yarran ..jesse hogan ,jack martim . ben kennedy , dayle garlett ,
jed anderson ,, emmanuel irra ,, mason shaw ,liam mcbean ,,tipungwuti ,,josh simpson,,

try use trades to gain higher draft picks while keeping what we have - also huge fan of getting goddard on a 3 or 4 year contract spoke with a very Essendon friend who believes he still an absolute gun would be a great asset to our defensive unit still like garlett @ pick 8

IF IF we dont get tippet would the club look at using pick 8 on jaksch or Mason shaw, maybe if that is higher then what they should go just to secure that QUALITY key foward.

Also whats peoples on thoughts on former crows foward TOM LEE apparently his Reserves form has been really impressive, I dont to much about him BUT from reports he seems to be a ready to go foward............

I am not sure that Tom Lee will be that dominant number 1 key forward that we are looking for. His contested marking is not a strong point and he is more of a lead up player who uses his athleticism to get separation, although he is capable of taking contested marks and has sticky hands. He is also good below his knees and stays involved in the play well. I think he is probably worth a second rounder this year, if GWS don't trade him off. I think that he would work well in our forward line, potentially as either a second or third tall, but he is not that no. 1 target that we would be looking at imo.

Ben Saunders would be a better pick up than Tom Lee. Saunders is not a KPF, but is a proven goal kicker. Karnezis + pick 23 for melbournes pick 13 if we do that we can get Mason Shaw or Jaksch

I asked before, but what are peoples thoughts on Tom Temay and Nick Murphy who is the captain of South Adelaide Panthers.

Tom Temay - a good chance to be picked up in the draft second round onwards, personally I have him in the third round. He is a good solid player who does everything very well, but no elite qualities. He is a good defensive player, and provides very good rebound, he reads the play reasonably well. Athletically he is probably about average so he could struggle in defending quicker small forwards, he is also quite short at 179cm so could struggle defensively against the marking types. He is a solid option who should get picked up, but he is surplus to our needs.

Nick Murphy - Have not really seen him much or taken notice, seems to be a solid mid type. Doubt he will get picked up. Mitch Clisby seems to be more likely from the SANFL as a prospect.

Really like Temay he will probably be taken in the second round early third. If he is there at pick 49 we could do a lot worse. I do agree with you he is surplus to our need. Really like Nick Murphy very hard at it and can rack up possies.
What's everone's thoughts on Aliir Aliir?
Exciting young player with a lot of upside. With that upside their is a lot of risk involved with him IMO. He had a good carnival without setting the world on fire.
No thanks. If we want big men Liam Mcbean would be a better option.

I agree with Offside on this. Lee is a complementary forward who is not particularly physical. He has good pace and mobility and will pick up some goals but he is not a pack crashing big target. Grant from the Bulldogs is a guy that you might compare him to.

Clisby - I like as well and is one to keep an eye on as things get closer.

Aliir - not for me. He is not tall enough to be an AFL ruck and has little idea how to play the game. He is very athletic and will do the occasional thing which makes you sit up and pay attention but if you watch him he misreads the play and gets to poor positions entirely too often. He needs to play at the lower levels for a couple of years and learn the game and then maybe be picked up by an AFL club.

On rucks I would not be taking any specialist ruck outside of Grundy. Very poor year for the big men. I don't mind McBean but I have him as a KP/Ruck rather than a pure ruck.

I was just musing about our ruck stocks and I think I too would only take a KP/Ruck as opposed to a pure ruck. If we got Tippett, I may not take one at all.

1st ruck capable

Leuenberger
Hudson

1st ruck developing

Longer

Ruck/Forward capable

[Tippett]
Lisle
Merrett

Ruck/Forward developing

Michael

I think the mix is probably about right. I think Longer and Michael are probably interchangeable anyway - I certainly don't rule Michael out as a possible 1st ruck down the track and I don't rule Longer out as a ruck-forward prospect. We may also add Scott Clarke to the rookie list this year which would give us an additional ruck/KPP type.

We're still exposed if we lose both Leuenberger and Hudson but nowhere near as badly as we were this year. Longer will have a year's development in him and Michael is much improved. It won't be as much a situation of throwing them into the deep end if they have to play a few games as first ruck. Further, the possible recruitment of Tippett means that you've got a more proficient ruckman as your second ruck (who is proper ruck size), as opposed to relying on Merrett or Lisle for the chop out. If Leuey/Tippett had an 80/20 split of ruck time, you could probably have Longer/Tippett do a 60/40 split, to take some of the pressure off the young bloke.

Assuming we can only squeeze another year out of Huddo, whether we need another stop gap insurance ruck for 2014 will depend on how quickly Longer and Michael develop. It probably isn't ideal to rely on 3rd year ruckmen as your 2nd ruck but it depends on the individuals.

Didn't mind Merrett in the ruck, to be honest.

Neither did I. But I don't think I'd want him spending 40% of each game there. Against, 1st rucks, he was pretty badly beaten in the air, even if his ground level presence made up for it.
